Or attempt to at least ( some things in the book I will use are unnecessarily abstract IMHO).

This is the book I will follow, published by Chronicle Books.

I will stick primarily to pencil and/or pen as the paper is not suited to wet media. I will keep no rules regarding inspiration source, I may draw from photos, life or imagination.

The pages have from 1 to 4 drawings, I will do the drawings in whatever order tickles my fancy, and will only post finished pages. I will date the drawings to keep track of the when, I will number them here to keep track of the qty completed.

I would say that I would like to get this done in 1 year, but deadlines feel too much like work and this is supposed to be fun!

Rolling pin, hammock

Great start. Looking forward to the rest of the year's sketches. The hammock drawing is especially appealing.

The girl in the hammock seems so relaxed and enjoying the scene. Nice job.

Nice start, Shannon. I've seen that book. It reminds me of the scavenger hunts in the Art from Life Forum here on Wet Canvas.

Great sketches! I'm curious...are you following the book page by page or skipping around a bit if it is a difficult item to find?

Shannon Expat
01-18-2015, 12:02 PM
I skip around based on mood. It I can't imagine up a picture or find a life reference, I search for pics on the web. There are pictures of everything on the web.

As I am sure you can tell, I get into some subjects far more than others, some I just do a perfunctory job to finish off the page.

01-18-2015, 01:24 PM
nice job on these sketches - Alfred HItchkock -..wow .

01-18-2015, 02:54 PM

 Alfred Hitchcock!

Great variety of sketches. Love the Bob Marley portrait and that's a very young Alfred Hitchcock, so cool. Ruffled chips, that great spotted lizard, the nice tonal work in your beach hammock fantasy... this is shaping up to be a great journal! Keep going!

A doily

01-25-2015, 09:47 PM
Wow! Good sketches on the water tower, surf board, cheese... but that lace is a spectacular example of negative painting. That's how realists approach lace in a still life, paint any wrinkles in it with light washes, let it dry and then start picking out each hole in the lace perfectly. It's lively and accurate! Real lace gets little irregularities if it's handmade and this is a recognizable kind of real lace. I have seen this before, brings up memories of pieces seen in museums and historical exhibits.

Thanks, it was fun. I am trying to be loose in these sketches ( I practice tight drawings enough for my oil paintings), but this doily is one I thought afterwards it would be satisfying to really nail down the drawing on, make it really symmetrical. I might try it again sometime.

I kinda get the zen of creating personal mandalas now too.

01-26-2015, 02:01 AM
You're sketches are really intricate, nice!

I'm very intrigued to do this book - I am on Amazon & I see that these books are so cheap too! Wow. I may buy a couple as there are different books! It'd definitely keep me busy over the summer - and it'd be good brain exercise as well. Loving all the sketches!
