View Full Version : Umbrella (New Game)

Kyle Staver, an artist whose work I have been following for some time, plays an interesting game on her Facebook page. Each day she posts three or so paintings on a single simple theme... it could be a color, a number, an object in the paintings, or whatever. Others who follow her page then post their own images in response to the initial theme... however they may interpret it. I thought this might spur us on to discovering some interesting... even unknown... works of art.

So...

Today's Theme: Umbrella:

Carl Frederick Frieseke seems to have really loved using umbrellas as props in his paintings... and who can blame him? They are great at catching the light and act as a sort of halo:

Another famous umbrella/parasol- Francisco Goya:

And I only just stumbled upon this painting by William MacGregor Paxton in which the parasol casts a marvelous yellow glow upon the woman's face:

I am not adept at posting images, but the first thing that occurred to me in terms of further art showing umbrellas was a set of four chinoiserie tapestries from Jacobus. There are typically lots of people in unusual headgear- pointy hats and so forth- holding parasols over themselves or over other people while riding on alligators or being trailed by flamingos.

New Day... and time for a new theme. Since I spent the evening... after a great Bar-B-Que... drinking entirely too much... I'm suggesting the theme of:

The Morning After (however you interpret it)
