Hi Jo....

I am looking to paint this sunset scene...but have had problems figuring out what else to do with the painting. Should I put a sailboat...palm trees...a lifeguard shack....maybe some surf boards....a pier? I just don't know what else to do with it.

This photo was taken a few hundred yards from where I live in Suffolk UK...As you can see, the land is fairly flat and there aren't a lot of sweet spots to focus in on.However, local pictures sell... How would you make it more interesting as a picture without losing it's rural qualities?

I'm looking forward to this session especially.
I have hundreds of motifs that are in the "gotta paint this" pipeline, so I'm posting one of my own private photos here for consideration.
Jo, you have my permission to use it or elements thereof for teaching purposes.

I've been considering and tinkering with this photo for a long time (I had to shrink it to a fraction of its size for uploading, so I hope it's still relatively clear).
I took it in a park near my home in 2010. It's a composite with an optional, pasted snippet of a romping dog from another photo I took nearby that day (hence the color mismatches).
I'd be very interested to see "WWJoD"? :cat:
But I will love seeing the possibilities for the other terrific pix posted here too!

Here is a view within the garden I keep doing plein air flowers from. It's the spot from which I did a plein air that got interrupted halfway through. This one I definitely intend to paint from the photo. It'll definitely be pastels.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Sep-2014/70184-7-30-2014_Plein_Air_Scene_Reference_Post.jpg

I almost posted several but you're going to be analyzing a lot of photos. This one is the most changeable in terms of moving elements around - both of the others are buildings that I'd want to do portraits of that are recognizable as the scene itself. This garden constantly gets changed as some of the plants get taken out and replaced with other annuals regularly. Perennials mostly stay put but sometimes get chopped down.

I photographed this scene near Owen Sound, ON, a few years ago and did a painting from the close-up picture . I was never very happy with the result, and wonder whether the more distant version would have been more interesting. Or could the closeup be improved in composition and/or colours, with more lights and variety in browns? http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Sep-2014/34313-IMG_5963c_750x600.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Sep-2014/34313-IMG_5964_450x600.JPG

Hi Johannes,
This is a picture I took while in Mt. Dora Florida, last year. I have flirted with painting this for a long time. I have glommed two different photos, but still not sure if this would work as a painting. There's "something" about it that needs tweaking, but can't put my finger on it.

Hopefully you have some suggestions that would make it a viable painting.

Your free to use in you demonstration on the 18th. Looking forward to it.

Hello Johannes,

Following is a photo I took awhile ago and, now that I have taken some of your classes, I would like to do a painting of it. I think a some white water flowing over the rocks in the left front might create a little more interest. Would appreciate your feedback on how you would paint this scene.

I give my permission for this photo to be used in the October 18, 2014 free demo.

I was on a gondola when I took this photo and it has always bothered me how the camera distorted the perspective. Should I straighten the windows some, or leave them? Should I get rid of the window on the far left? I love the old brick with the bright colors against them. I will probably paint this in pastel or watercolor.

Hi Johannes: Do you plan to comment on each photo submitted? The reason I ask is that I am tempted to jot down what I think you will say. After taking classes with you from the onset, I want to see how much I have retained. Of course, I can always go back and watch "Paint Stunning Landscapes from Photos" - never a bad idea. It is the most comprehensive, easy to understand course. Usually I just go back and review a section that is pertinent to what I am working on at the easel.

In any event, I look forward to tomorrow and the Paint-Along starting October 25.

This photo was taken in North Carolina. In painting this scene I would certainly have to get away from the green values which are too much the same throughout. Since the house is the focal point I would want the viewer to zoom into that first and then see the fencing and mailbox. I would like to know how that would be handled.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Oct-2014/1026522-House_on_a_hill_N.C..jpg

Melisa - It was in the Wet Canvas newsletter and is posted on Jo's site: Micki

Thanks, Micki. I'll go check Jo's site. I'm not sure I even knew WC had a newsletter, or if I did, I'd forgotten. Could someone point me to where you sign up for it, please?

Hope it's not too late to submit a photo for the composition class. Would love to know how to simplify this one I just recently took of Vancouver Harbour for painting!
