I haven't been on WC for a very long time. I apologize I did not give any information with my homework. I will firgure out how to add text to the photo post in time.

Soft pastel with some pastel pencil on #800 paper. I took an old painting (portrait profile) that I started over two years ago that I had only washed the background of an old building (wash consists of applying pastel colors in general areas and using a painting brush and Gamsol I can use the pastel like a watercolor wash). I turned the building to landscape profile and washed the whole paper again. Then using the long edge of my green pastel while the paper was still wet (damp), I "slid" my leaves in. This allows me to see the underpainting while still giving me dept and detail. Otherwise I can not paint a leaf to save my life. :-)
You have my permission to use this painting for educational purposes.

Hi Jo,

Sorry I had no time this week to do the homework you put on the site. Instead, I show a small and lonely rose I did just after last class trying to put in practice all the good recommendations you gave us. (Well I know you said "avoid to put only one flower" ..... but still question of time ...) Thank you for this special course which will teach me a lot ! See you next saturday

Sorry these are not the best pictures. The first one is one I did from memory because I didn't have a picture with me. The second one I did today and had a picture to go by. They are both watercolors and are about 8.5" x 6". I will try to scan them tomorrow and see if I can get better images. If I do I will post them.

Johannes has suggested we download Fotosketcher as a tool to manipulate our photos. I asked my husband, a computer geek, to help me do so. If you choose to do this, be aware that you need to be very careful of the download site you go to for the download. Most of the download sites want to install a lot of malware and bloatware. I used Softronic.com which still wanted to install add-on toolbars (you have to select the "Custom" option and deselect the various junk they want to install. AVG AntiVirus flagged one of the downloads as filled with viruses. Cnet.com also is a reliable site which I wished I had used instead of Softronic.com.

I sent him an email. Here is his reply
Hi Johannes,

Thank you for the information. I suggest people always download either from my website (with the direct download link I provide) or from the official mirror (www.fosshub.com).
Unfortunately, I have very little control over what other websites do. Even CNET.com used to bundle FotoSketcher with some adware. I was able to contact them and get them to stop, but I cannot do so with every download website.
Another problem I have is that some ads disguise themselves as download buttons and trick people into downloading adware instead of FotoSketcher.

Best regards,

David

I am posting two images of the same pastel mini. 4.5" x 5". I always paint big (minimum 16x20" and much larger) and I always get stuck on the details. So I am taking me out of my comfort zone with this work.

Soft pastel on #800 paper. The first is with the bunny. I didn't like the bunny after I saw the photo I took so I took out the bunny. May take out the tulip after this also, I think it is missing something.

Yeah, I know.... not enough bright overcast days in Colorado. Either no clouds, puffy clouds (which create a blue cast from the blue sky), or actively precipitating - which wrecks pastels. I need a camera that can handle low light situations and that has GOOD white balance adjustments. Half the time I put a white paper next to the painting and then use Photoshop to remove any color cast.

I pulled up the other photo on the computer and placed it next to the painting. Ugh!

I did learn my lesson - on this week's, I flattened the easel so it was getting light from the overheads and took it at ASA 200. No flash.

Hi All!
Here's my much-modified version of the bunny vase reference photo.

It's in oil on an acrylic underpainting on a 12x16" (30x40 cm) canvas

Acrylic colors used: Indigo, aliz. crimson, Taubenblau (dove blue), kiwi, light green & dark green

Oil colors used: Cobalt violet, sky blue, sap green, cobalt green opaque, permanent rose (quinacridone) and white.

I think I'll call it SUMMER PLEASURES, and Johannes is welcome to use it for public critique and learning purposes. Thanks for any corrections / ideas for improvement. And Jo, since I have to miss class :crying: & your critiques this Sat., could I ask you to please give me your critique here (too)? (Or will critiques be included in the class recording????)
Either way, THANKS!

Yeah, I agree with you both -- taking photos that accurately depict what I've actually painted can become as much of a challenge as the painting itself. I'm thankful that my homework photo turned out okay this time, but it's one of the first relative "successes" I've had.

I really like your paintings Sherry, even when the camera doesn't!

Here's my effort for the flower painting class last Saturday. It's wet on wet in oils and took about 5 hours. I'm used to painting in Acrylics for years so I'm starting to do more in water-mixable oils. It's hard to "get it right the first brush stroke" without over blending on the canvas.
Thanks

Sorry for posting a photo of the same painting but the previous one was taken at an angle to avoid reflections. This one is pretty much straight on. I added more contrast to the first photo in Photoshop. This one is untouched and shows more natural and true color and value.

Elisabeth, I have to say that I disagree with Jo on this one. I like it very much with the light background. A dark background would change the feeling entirely and although the flowers would stand out more, I don't think I'd like it as much. I hope you don't change the background.

This is a note for Jo - a lot of your students can only paint on weekends, so it is good if you can have the homework photo up right away. You can even post it before the class -- that can make a huge difference. It is frustrating to have a whole empty day and a half go by and not be able to start the homework.

Thanks for considering this!

Hi,
I unfortunately only had time to modify my Week 2 project according to Jo's recommendations to try to use more shadows & gradient planes
to make things more 3-D, round the pot, etc.

I also like to use thick impasto in my focal area to increase depth. (Jo, I also like your and Kenneth's tip to apply bits of dried/drying pigment scraped off the palette. Grabbed that nugget for myself during Kenneth's Zorn classes last summer.) :cat:

I'll be interested to hear / read your comments & critiques and I freely permit Johannes to use this image for educational purposes.

As one of Jo's students lucky enough to have hopped aboard back at that very first stop along his entire educational ride here, I've learned a lot along the way, but feel I made some major break-throughs in this class.

You were right, Jo, due to this more limited subject matter, it's true that I find myself finally able to grasp & apply some of the theories I only thought I "understood" before ... so especially thanks for that! Better late than never....

I'm looking forward to tonight's class and I want to thank Johannes for yet another VERY educational webinar!

PS I'm noting the shadow values in the photo, esp on the right side of the pot, are only about half as dark as the actual painting.

Ted, if awards were going out I would give you 1st place, beautifully done with watercolor which in watercolor it is hard as I found out with mine.

I see what Jo meant re the shadows....but, ( and I forgot to add the flower shadows on the wall) the light was going right to left wasn't it? However the shadow did add something so thank you Jo!

The background doesn't need shadows because we can assume the wall is several yards behind the flowers.
