A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Bold and Loose #2 Landscapes+
Project Leader: Alan Cross
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Ok the other bold and loose is getting a bit large so I was thinking lets go again, everyone seemed to really enjoy trying to loosen up there painting.....so this time lets have some new paintings and make them at least 25% landscape to full landscapes and as long as you have at least 25% landscape in there you can add anything else you want but try like last time and show the strokes lets see loose.......Oh yes and don't forget the bold!!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=538)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Ok just one more thought if you are adding photo's please say if its alright for anyone to paint them if they want....you can use my ref ones if you like or use your own or just your imagination...if adding photo's please try to get something a bit different either with color, composition or whatever you are best to decide if it works for this project....
thanks,
Alan :)

The painting has exciting plays of complimentry colors, I think this is what I like best about gnu's landscape. One thing that did give me pause was the folage in the forground blocked me from entering the scene as I would have liked to.

Maunalio..I'm really pleased you like this..I've started another..what do you suggest may have helped regarding being blocked a bit past the foreground? Perhaps some blue showing right through in a 'gap'? or bringing more brights..somewhere..in the mid ground??
thanks for the imput..

I took a ref photo while I was there, so, yeah, probably, but on another, larger surface.

BTW, my monitor only shows about 4 (neon) colors these days, so I'll have to wait until I'm at work this week to comment on all the paintings in this project. They still look pretty good in blue and pink!

Nicely done! You have created good depth through using intensity and warmth of the forward vegetation.

Now that I'm at work and using the computer in my classroom I can finally see the paintings as they really are. And they are beautiful!

I doctored mine on polyview so you can see what I see at home. Maybe someone has some advice. It's an oldie and probably needs to be chucked out.

Thanks to you, Alan and Mooz for your compliments.

Alan, I agree about the pixelating!! I saw that as soon as I saw the uploaded images.

I posted a question immediately in the "Misc Forums / Computers / Tech for Artists" forum to get some answers on this. If you have anything for a diagnosis I'd welcome it.

I'm using my HP Photo Editor, it's extremely quick & USUALLY more than adequate. maybe I need to fire up the Photoshop each time (much slower) to adjust size / brightness/ contrast?

Again lovely work ................... so just how many paintings do you do in a day Alan? Isn't it wonderful how paintings can take us to places we have never been to and even to imaginary places. It is like opening up a whole new world. Great stuff - thank you so much for starting this project and taking the time out to run it so well.
Thanks to all who have commented on my paintings - it means a lot to me to even get a mention as I know that it is time consuming to keep up to date with all the posts.

Thank you Alan and Little Dreamer.

It wasn't particularly bold but with the time limit, it was loose. LOL.

Little Dreamer, welcome to the project. There are some great examples ( hmmmm, not mine ) in here of what Alan was proposing, wonderfully unexpected colors and broad brush strokes.

Looking forward to seeing yours.

My apologies Little Dreamer, you did have an entry that I missed in Sept. I am off WC that month due to shows.

This is very loose, with wonderfully broad strokes. It looks very fantasy based with the tiny person lost in the woods. Is there a story behind this ? Feels like a children's story. Nice work.

~yep , the water colors here are awesome. i got my water colors out but cant seem to do to much with them. this painting ~one of my first completed en plein aire. there were like thirty people on a cliff . taking turns jumping into the water below. because of the amount of people and everyone jumping i concentrated on one person. i have one other from the day before it is a girl in mid air jumping into the water~

lisilk
11-09-2003, 05:44 AM
You have more guts than I Little Dreamer. Jumping off the cliff would be no problem but plein aire painting is another story. LOL. You did great !

I felt the same way about watercolors ( and for that matter, pastels ) as you do. Intimidating. The way I conquered the fear is that I started doing projects without posting them, just to get the feel. Then just start diving in and you will be amazed at how fast you progress. This is a user friendly site. People will help you along the journey.

We already know that you are good at color and composition so have at it. It feels so good !

I guess this qualifies as loose just because I didn't really use brushes but lots of sponging.

Okay Alan...at what point does one begin to love watercolors ? Can I get an exact time ? 1 yr. ? 2 yrs. ? 40 yrs. ? LOL. I don't understand why this is so hard for me.

I got sorta burned out doing photography, so I thought I would try watercolor. It's a very exciting medium! I painted this mostly using a turkey baster, palette knife, and drinking straw. (An old oil painting brush was used only to mix paint.) I see a couple of things I should have done differently, but I'll never get it perfect anyhow, and I have to stop somewhere.....

Your picture really caught my eye. I'm a REAL beginner and I would love to paint something like that real soon. I'm still working out how to use this site so I hope to join in soon.

This is really a nice piece. Good use of your colors, creates a definite mood.
Also, interesting texture throughout the composition.

This bold and loose stuff is challenging...and intriguing! Here are two very different results. C & C encouraged!

On City:
I've been hesitate to try a full cityscape with tons and tons of buildings -- so much to sort out, draw, manage. But on this I just used a smal flat brush, and somewhat randomly started making little blocks, many of them overlapping, and giving some sense of shadows and sides of buildings. So I'm intrigued.

On Vaporetto Lanes:
it was just quick strokes, wet in wet, adjusting as I went. Only at the end, when basicially dry did I add any hard edges, just for a little definition. the picture/moment I had in mind for this was an early, cloudy evening, as the lights went on for the vaporetto routes. maybe not such a great painting for those of you who weren't there, but it surprisingly captures a lot of the feeling of that memory.

uh oh, Image Uploader failure...

Hi
I am still anewbie here and lover your watercolor forum.. basically I am craft teacher and now crazy about watercolors. I lover your wc community which is so helping and encouraging. I have joined a watercolor group here in Bombay and go outdoors. Al your tips and techniques have helped me so much. Frankly I dont know how to post an image, also I am new to handling computer. Will learn. Have done several paintings of Mumbai in watercolors and going outdoor paintign to Rajasthan after 2 months. I am going to work very hard, because if the painting is good it will be put up in the exhibition gallery. Thanks to you all once again. I also dont know how to get back to the forum I am into. Please give me some time to learn how to do it. I hope I am posting this in the right forum. Mr. Rod Web's techniques have really helped me to learn watercolors.

Hi Joshtsi and yes this is a big fourm but there is no rush.....you learn as you go the easist way to add an image is if you look up to the second tool bar and look under the quick links button there you will find the uploader its a easy tool to use and can find a image on your hard drive and upload it to wet canvas....and if you have any more questions a good place to ask them is in the new users forum.....
