Hey Katarina ;) - what a superb challenge! I love it! It's time for me to do another painting like this - one of my favourite works was a ref by Dewi - years ago!:D
Thank you m'dear! :D ... Jumpin' for joy!:D

05-01-2014, 10:27 AM
Oh what fun, thanks Katherine , I'm going to paint my real hat that my sister made for me for a afternoon tea party with friends :D

05-01-2014, 11:12 AM
Lovely idea Katherine.
Maureen, it reminds me of your beautiful painting too and went to check if the ref is still there.
Happy painting everyone

05-01-2014, 11:23 AM
Maureen, I thought you would enjoy us coming to England for Tea Time this month!! I did have High Tea at the Brighton Royal Pavilion a few years ago with my DIL. . .I have never seen so much food!! It was delicious!! I had that in mind when I happened upon little Josie! ^^^ (My DIL's name, too.) Can't wait to see what everyone creates!!

Jean, oh, I can hardly wait to see what your sister made for you!! Were you the fanciest? Dressing up this month will be fun!! Glad you are joining in on the fun!!!

Dewi, so glad you are on board, too!! Would love to see your ref!

Peeps, don't forget, you can put your hat on a table, on a stand, on a nail on the wall, or on an animal  . People are optional.

Ohhhhhhhhh! Now that's certainly one we've never had before! I like it....I love it! What endless possibilities. Now....I just need to put my thinking hat on (sorry about the bad joke but I couldn't resist!) This will be a lot of fun, thanks Katherine.

05-01-2014, 03:58 PM
Yikes! That is certainly a challenge, especially if the referenced hat doesn't already have flowers on it! I'm not very good at putting things in that aren't in the reference (no imagination! or perhaps it's just that my imagination doesn't get detailed enough!)... Well, we'll see what happens...

05-01-2014, 04:24 PM
Oh, Viv, so glad you are on board with the Hats and Flowers!! Think we will have so much fun with this topic!! Can hardly wait to see your creation!!!

Lea, shhhhh. . .if you will put hats and flowers in 'Search', you might solve your stress. . .shhhhh. . .I did not tell you to do that. . .remember if Maureen says anything. . .shhhhhh!!  Or, you could paint Maddie's Tea Time hat!

Wheeeee, we off to a great start!!

A wearable plant parade! What a lovely idea. I was watching the Kentucky Derby yesterday, and I kept thinking all those hats would look so much better with real flowers on them! I'm very excited to join you all this month.

05-04-2014, 08:59 PM
Sandy, welcome!!! The Kentucky Derby's hats have inspired me, too! They have such beautiful 'fluff' and I think that they would be perfect for our Tea Party!!  Glad you are joining in on the fun!!

Katherine - I'm really on the ball this month. I've signed up for an Oil Pastel Workshop over the next 2 weekends.

Oil Pastels are one medium that I've always intended to explore more, so...the Oil Pastel Workshop. I've done a little bit of reading on OP's, and apparently you can use the same (or similar) supports that you can with soft pastels.

So, Ive drawn out my hat with flowers on Colorfix sanded paper, and I'm all ready to begin it on Saturday! Keen eh!
I hope it turns out ok so I can post it on the 25th. :crossfingers:
The drawing looks ok, so I hope the rest of it goes as well, at least I've got plenty of time in case it all goes wrong! :crossfingers:

05-05-2014, 08:13 PM
Yay:clap: ! Two things I love hats and flowers. I have not participated in a while and needed something like this to get my creative juices flowing!

Welcome back!:)

Viv - sounds like fun - I'm never satisfied with my attempts at OPs - so do share any secrets!:D

I looked at my beautiful sunhat over the weekend and thought I might 'decorate' that :D

05-06-2014, 11:08 AM
Nadiyyah, so glad you are going to join in this month!!  What a beautiful garden this will be!!!

Maureen, can't wait to see you 'Sunhat'!!

Off to finish drawing mine off!!

Hello there,
I'm fairly new to this site. Would love to get to know some of you ladies :-) This sounds like a fun project. I needed something new to paint too!

05-06-2014, 11:30 PM
Susanna, welcome, welcome, welcome!!!   You have found the right place and we are looking forward to getting to know you!! For chatting, join us in the Greenie's Room!!

It looks like we are having some newer artists here this month, what a joy to welcome you all!! (Texan, you know! )

Have fun, Peeps!!

Maureen, I had the same idea...now it's just a question of having the time to set it up AND paint it! May is a busy month for me, with several birthdays (including my own--turning 60! Eek!), and a first communion, each with the requisite party!

I tried searching the RIL for hats and flowers, but found nothing useful.:( Of course, it might an idea to search the web for Kentucky Derby hats:clear: , but then there's the issue of getting permission to use the reference.

I have an idea I'd like to try with one of my own hats and some purchased flowers...I just need to make the time to set it up, photograph it, and then paint it.

I love the idea...but it IS a challenge!

05-07-2014, 11:52 AM
Lea, you are heading in the right direction!!! Wheeee, can hardly wait to see what you decide on!! You might try the Morguefile.com because those are free to paint. Type in 'hats with flowers' and see what you come up with.

Peeps, start painting so you are not behind. . .we want a full Garden this month for our Tea Party!!!!

To look at some really fun paintings of decorated hats, take a look in WC here at Chia's paintings ... you'll get to her threads via the Members' Directory.:) (Under member Services, top blue bar .... you may have to go the Home page, not all Browsers now support access from all pages.)
But it's worth the effort!

05-08-2014, 01:03 AM
Maureen, is it okay to show the gals the one of the Tea Party Hat? They are all so cute and well painted!! Thanks for telling me about them!

Thanks Katherine! I'll check that out!

Yes Katherine - just add links to them ... they are fun and it might help some to realise they don't have to do 'botanical style' paintings but can be imaginative too.:)

These are the ones that Maureen was telling us about! Coralie, thank you for the fun hats!! Try to create something off the wall. . .that works for me!!   Fun, fun, fun!!

Viv and Jean, aren't these amazing?!? Coralie is really talented and thinks outside of the box!!   Maureen, wonder if you could ask her to join us this month? It would be fun to see what else she would create!!

Peeps, I have changed my hat so many times that it is wondering what I am going to do!

05-14-2014, 01:54 AM
Thanks, Maureen!! She would be a fun one to have painting with us!!

The masking is drying on my PP, the palette is organized, and just waiting for the sun to come up tomorrow so that I can start the process! Can't change my mind about the hat now! I like it better than where I had started!!

Hope Elaine is working on this, too! She was hoping to join in on the fun this month!!   HELLO, ELAINE!!!!

Are you having fun yet???

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

05-15-2014, 02:59 PM
Well, last weekend I bought 2 pots of flowers (the only way I could get the ones I wanted to paint), and when the sun came out briefly, I cut 2 flowers and tucked them into my hat band, and started taking photos. Of course, as soon as I started taking the photos, the sun hid behind the clouds...but it came back out before I was done, so I did get some decent references... If anyone is interested, I can post some here?

I'll start the painting this weekend...since I asked my husband which one he liked best, I'll have to paint that version or risk hurting his feelings! But I only showed him the two I liked best, so that will work just fine.

Vivien Maloney
05-15-2014, 03:42 PM
Ive started, got it sketched out....Im doing the hat from one photo and putting flowers on it from another and also going to paint it in my new medium of Oil Pastels....very brave of me I thought! It may turn out a complete mess (yes very likely!)

05-15-2014, 04:06 PM
Lea, you could post a couple here in case some might enjoy your refs. Thanks. You can also post them in the IRL so that others could use them later on. Love that you only showed him the two that you liked! Wise woman!!

Viv, what a challenge for you!! I know that it will not be a mess with you in charge!!

I have mine in progress and having to think it through. Perhaps. . .I picked up the wrong color for the hat, but like it better!! Experiment, experiment, experiment!! I even had my palette all laid out!!

Have fun with your projects!!

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

05-16-2014, 11:00 AM
OK, I've posted some of the photos in the RIL, and will include some of them here...then it's off to start painting!!!

I hope these prove useful for someone...I am using one of them, but I'm not saying which one...

05-16-2014, 11:51 AM
Lea, thank you so much for posting these beauties!!   They would look good at our Garden Tea Party!!

Peeps, how you are getting inspired!!! We have 9 more days!!!  Sling that paint!!

Hiya All, so glad to see your familiar names. I have been missing you all. Im heading home on the 24th May so hope to post 1 at least for this month. So far I have painted the Hat but thats it. Just posted in Greenies, I have a bad case of Pommie Flu and its floored me.
I have to go home, Im running out of paints. I have always complained we dont have the artist selection where I live, but boy never will I complain again. I have found it really expensive for art supplies here and have traipsed thru countless stores and Art Supply places to try to pick up familiar paints Gesso etc.

I guess it would be the same in any different country, but here I found the green shades just to vivid and unnatural for my eye. Even with mixing with other colours I just couldnt find the happy medium. Thankfully I had brought 2 shades with me. Raw Sienna and Buff Titanium 2 more, totally different in shade. Just goes to show you never know how good you got it till you go away.

I shall be in the air come 12m.d. the 24th, so will have to post on Australian time along with Viv. See you all then....

05-19-2014, 02:17 AM
Meryl!!! So glad that you are recovering from that flu!!  Post with Viv. . .great to know that you are painting!!

6 more days, Peeps!!

Hi everyone,
I tried to be active again and started here :)
so far painted one and since it is from two refs and didn't placed hat correctly, could any of you tell me how to anchor it so it doesn't look like floating?
Tried to paint table but it is not working. :(
Thanks :)
Since it is not convenience to go out with the situation I would try again painting another one.

Charlie's Mum
05-20-2014, 06:25 PM
Dewi, use a shadow?

The situation in BKk sounds horrendous, please stay in and safe and I hope it can all be resolved soon .... been thinking of you :)

Vivien Maloney
05-20-2014, 07:25 PM
Hi there Dewi - yes, as Maureen says "Stay safe", the situation there doesn't sound good! :grouphug:

I had the same difficulty as you. I've taken a hat photo from the RIL and put some flowers on to it. I thought I'd finished yesterday, but it didn't look right. So looking at it today, I realised the flowers were floating and not on the hat, but hovering above the hat! I've added some shadows beneath the flowers and it does look more convincing!

05-20-2014, 07:54 PM
Dewi, sending hugs and good thoughts for you

05-21-2014, 12:20 AM
Dewi, so glad that you decided to join in on the fun!! Yes, the shadows will anchor the flowers. I have a lovely group of gals that I paint with each week, so I took mine there and got some very helpful hints and shadows were mentioned more than 5 times!  (I have not painted in a while, too, so have found out that it 'comes' back to you, but more practice is needed in my case! ) Whatever is going on. . .please, take care of yourself and know that we are praying for you and yours!!

Peeps, like I mentioned to Dewi, I got some critiques on both of mine and will do some damage-control to get them finished. It is always the little things that seem to stump me, but the gals at the Studio are experienced artists and are kind to the ones trying to learn more and more!

5 more days, Peeps!! Sling that paint!!

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

05-21-2014, 01:40 AM
 Yes well I have the same problem....hat floating in air....

We dont have garden parties here, we have bar-b-que's, so I wanted to throw in a schooner of beer.................................But Ive run out of canvas:(

05-21-2014, 03:27 AM
Thank you very much Maureen, Viv, Jean and Katherine.... hugs to you all.

I did paint the shadow... might enlarge it though we'll see what happen and flowers are alright they looked stuck hehe.

Use your tote bag Meg :)

Happy painting everyone

05-22-2014, 06:03 AM
Flower Power ! Brilliant .

Charlie's Mum
05-22-2014, 08:20 AM
Dewi -if you get the shadow really deep closest to where flower and hat are together, it will look anchored.:) .... lighter shadows where flower is above hat - 'simples', as the meerkats say :D

(Don't know if any of you get these meerkat adverts where you are - brilliant puppets - make me smile:D)

Vivien Maloney
05-22-2014, 03:39 PM
No Maureen, we dont get those adverts here in NZ. I wish we did as they sound better than the ones we do get!

Ive been sitting here smugly looking at mine, because Ive finished it. :smug: But as Im finished so early, Im thinking, maybe Im NOT finished it, and have begun messing and prodding with it. I just need to leave it alone!
Only 2 days to go - hurry up the 25th! (Before I ruin mine completely! )

05-23-2014, 12:40 AM
Welcome, marlynmonrow, we are glad that you peeked in! Hopefully you will have a painting for the May PP Garden, too!

Viv, I understand about tweaking!! It can get you into a lot of trouble, or, it can make the painting sing!

The deadline that seemed months away will be here very soon: for the Downunder bunch: Saturday, and for the rest of us: Sunday.

Hugs, Peeps!!

Susanna, yes, you will have plenty of time to whip out a beauty for our Garden this month!!

Maureen, mmmmm, GF, you need to get it into gear, I would think, but it will be a star, as usual!!

Tomorrow the rest of our Downunders will be posting and on Sunday, our Garden will get the paintings from the rest of us. Remember, you will have until the 31st to post your Tea Party Garden Hats, so don't panic!! :cat:

So I've been on a rather long painting hiatus, and am really getting back into the flow of things... I made a stab at this month's challenge, hopefully participating in these will keep me on the right track.

I'm assuming we can post more than one? I might do a whole handful, just to get back into practice :)

One down, another on its way (drying before I can work more) :smug:

There now Katherine my friend, you can put the whip away

05-24-2014, 11:33 AM
I also finished mine but I'm having a hard time keeping my hands off it. Since I don't wear hats, I painted mine on a model. This is the first time I've tried anything near a portrait in acrylic, and I can see something is a bit off, but don't know quite how to fix it. I hope I can get feedback when I post tomorrow. :crossfingers:

05-24-2014, 11:45 AM
Maureen, I knew you could do it!!   I just finished tweaking mine yesterday. . .and I am calling them 'Finished'! (But, glad you snapped into line so quickly! )

Good morning everyone! It's Sunday 25th May and Winter here in New Zealand, and what a wet, cold, day it is. The forecast is for snow and "small hail"! I ask you, now the weather forecasters are measuring the size of hail?!

Here's mine, 25cm x 20cm - Oil Pastels - on Colorfix paper

05-24-2014, 04:37 PM

I take my hat off to you with your use of the OPs - clever lady!:)

(We don't have hail - late spring here - but we do have cold, wet and wind ....... and now the wind has died down, FOG!) It's yukky my Antipodean friend!

I know I'm 3 hours early but I'm not going to get my w/c one finished tonight - nor tomorrow probably - so here's my digi that I had fun with.
It's ArtRage - not such a good version as Jean's ArtRage4, but enough for me to still be learning!

This is my own hat and I got the lovely corsage for this one from JEFrantz.

Dewi--stay safe!

meggs--Very cheerful, and the bright flowers stand out nicely against the neutral colors of the hat...and they are colors. This is not a boring neutral!

Viv--I understand tweaking, the bane of my existence. But it doesn't look like you had any trouble there. It's a lovely hat, with exquisite flowers. The flower colors go so nicely with the hat color!

Maureen--Lovely digi! The hat just glows against the rich green foliage...but it's such a sunny day, shouldn't that hat be on your head to protect against the sun???

It's already the 25th down under so I think it's okay to post :D

all done with ArtRage

Maureen, a lovely summer hat with great colour and flowers, by the way AR4 isn't much different than AR3 :D

Viv great pastel work with lovely colours and flowers

Jean, you outdid yourself this time!!  Wonderful job on each one and thank you for including little Josie, too! She would have missed the Party and she was already dressed for it! They are all so good. . .cannot choose a favorite!!

Good morning everyone
I need practice after haven't been painting for a year not that I was better before... here are:

Floating Island in acrylic on canvas paper size about 12" by 10".... from two refs.

Jungle girl and the original hat supposed to be wider :wink2: ..... acrylic on canvas size slightly smaller and from 2 refs too.

Both are my hats and yesterday when I was wearing another hat a lady said to me that "your hat is beautiful" and I could get her accent after thanking her,
I asked her back was she British and she said yes so I told her that this hat was made there.
She might had recognize the style.

Thank you for looking. :)

05-25-2014, 12:22 AM
Start with Megg, hope you are well after a long flight.
Your painting is lovely and love your difficult to paint flower, would love to see the real hat and might search at the internet.

Viv, very lovely nice setting and colours too.

Maureen, I like your flowers and envy your BG... if Katherine doesn't mind show us your fave one/hat with hibiscus one. :D

Thank you Lea

Jean, so many beautiful DiGi work here and so delicate love all especially the second one.

Looking forward for the others to post
and yours Katherine... it is almost midnight over there right?

05-25-2014, 01:55 AM
Dewi, wonderful choices with both!! Love the Jungle Girl hat!  How nice the lady recognized a neat hat when she saw it!!

You and I have been in the wilderness of The Slump with our paintings, but it is nice to be back painting and having you along!!  I have decided I will just paint and continue on even when I am not really in the mood! I think that is the way to shake this slump-business! :clear:

Maureen, I would love the see the other hat, too!

Dewi, I think that it is time to post my Tea Party Hats! :cat:

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

Hope you like it!

Well, unfortunately I didn't understand the concept completely (i'm a bit distracted most of the time), but here is what I came up with.
Done in watercolor...I wanted to find a subject that had strong shadows and highlights, I wanted to focus on those rather than getting the details perfect. I'm trying to go "back to basics" and am rather happy with how this turned out. I only wish I could make the leaves less muddled, maybe i'll go back and add stronger contrast.

Oh what creative and beautiful hats to see here already. I like the Artrage and it makes a painting look so real. Well, I chose the little girl with the blue hat and the one with the pink hat. Both done in watercolors 5 x 7 size. Thanking the host in advance and I loved this challenge.

05-25-2014, 10:55 AM
Very well so far...lots of pretty hats and gorgeous flowers! I have been stuck on fascinator hats and pouty expressions this month! oh yeah...and green eyes.:) This one is watercolor, 9x12/arches 140lb.

I could call her Green Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for Bob Dylan who just had a birthday yesterday...hmmm...just a thought.

much love,

05-25-2014, 11:15 AM
Wow! I just love the paintings that have been posted so far and will offer some comments in an upcoming post.

This was my first time using acrylic inks, which was fun. It is on hot press watercolor paper, 14 1/2 inches by 13 inches.

Mad hatters tea party indeed! Wonderful paintings and ideas from all so far.

05-25-2014, 02:37 PM
OK, I've got a little time between other commitments...what a beautiful tea we can have with all these lovely hats!

Jean, what a cute little doll with her flowered hat! And the dignified older woman with the shady hat is superb. But my favorite is the gay 90s lovely with the elegantly tipped chapeau!

Dewi, I love your floating island concept! And the drooping flowers on the jungle girl hat are great!

Katherine, I love the green hat with the fabulous and showy flower! And the trapped in memories hat is quite lovely too. I'm glad you persevered through the slump. It can be hard...I had my own slump a year or so ago (have not fully recovered), and this forum with its engaging plant parade challenge really helped me find my muse again! (Oh, and thanks for the kind comments!)

Indiechixor, A lovely still life...and it is a hat with flowers...they're just not ON the hat! Don't think it's a problem. We tend to be pretty open minded here!

Lil, I love your hats, with people under them! I like the way the first hat brings out the blue in her eyes, and the second is just incredibly cute!

chana, I love, love, love your painting! Great use of lost lines here! And the hat is very elegant.

Carol, Great hat! I love the swoop of the brim in front! This one definitely has character and class!

We're going to have a great tea party this month!

05-25-2014, 03:51 PM
Wow ladies, these results are staggering and heart-stopping  It's a great subject that was fun to do. I'm posting one of my redone watercolors of potted daisies flipped vertically with a hatted garden gal drawn and painted over the pots...a little abstract-crazy  some of you might've seen on my blog  This detail is 15x11.

05-25-2014, 03:53 PM
What lovely hats!

Meggs - stunning arrangement of red and yellow flowers
Vivien - beautiful stargazer lilies; I can smell them!
Jean - all 3 are great, but I love the 3rd one the most
Dewi - the dipping down purple flowers are so cool!
Katherine - so stylish!
Lea - love that bow; Bravo!
Indiechixor - lovely painting!
ArtsyMom - very colorful flowers and faces
Everythingsheneeds - soft beautiful colors
Carol - very dramatic; Vogue magazine look out!

Here's mine - acrylic on 11x14 panel. It's a detail of Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party. I've always loved the painting especially this woman playing with her dog.

Thanks for a great challenge!

BB, so glad you joined us and your hat and flowers look just fine. . guess I did not explain it clearly. . .sorry! But, you did a great job on your strong shadows and highlights! Love the flow of the ribbon!! What size is the painting?

Lil, wow, so glad you used the girls and you made their hats so colorful!! What a wonderful sight. . .both of them!! Great job!!

Chana, I love the strong light in your painting!! You always give us such beauties!! Love her eyes, too! That hat is so perfect for her!! :cat:

What a wonderful selection of hats and flowers! Just gorgeous! I've been gone or busy until now, so I'm posting a bit later in the day than I intended, but here is Thoroughly Modern Mona. Ta Da! :D

She's done on 16 x 20 Gessobord in acrylics. She's my first portrait-like painting in acrylic. I've done a few in watercolor and gouache several years ago, but my first in acrylic. I was going for a slightly "Andy Warhol look," rather than totally realistic. Any feedback and/or suggestions would be appreciated!

I hope to comment on the many beautiful entries when I have more time.

05-25-2014, 07:15 PM
This project has been so much fun and much more rewarding than I might have thought in the beginning. So, thank you. I've gone through and taken notes about all the things I love about each of the paintings we've seen so far and this is what I got for you...

Meggs: I always look forward to seeing your bold color choices. It's hard to think you were down and homesick. I hope you are feeling better.

Viv: I'd totally wear your hat. You've done a good job on the b/g too. I like the way green fades to blue toward the bottom. High five!

Maureen: The ribbon on your hat is especially appealing. Your painting reminds me of a pretty day, gardening or maybe just a quiet and restful walk.

Jean: Yours look like pretty little dolls. I am amazed at what you can do with digital software and how real you make them seem.

Dewi: I tried to pick a favorite but I like them both very much in their own way.

Katherine: Are your hats for sale? It seems as if they've both come right out of a boutique and onto our project page.

Lea: Wow!! Omg!! and pat yourself on the back for the detail you were able to put into the texture of your hat.

Indiechixor: No worries...I did the same thing to start with but, I'm glad you didn't change your hat by adding flowers to it. I like it just the way it is.

Lil: It's hard to think that you could put so much detail into a 5x7 but you did and both seem so bright and summery. These would make good postcards.

Carol: I love the leafy neckline and deep purples. Very creative!

Kay: I keep turning my head vertically to see your daisies and either way, I am amazed. Yours is abstract-crazy-genius!

Sandy: Good idea to take the detail from something you love and share it like this.

Judy: Your title suits the style in this one. It's very contemporary and bold.

Meggs - Love your hat! Beautifully rendered flowers. Love the way they all sit so well together on the hat - one of your best paintings yet!

Jean - Your digi work is amazing! So perfect! All 3 are gorgeous…beautiful hats and flowers too.

Dewi - So good to see you painting again! 2 lovely hats and flowers on them are great too! I particularly like your "floating island" one. How nice of the lady to compliment you on your hat.

Chana - Wow, such an elegant painting! You've simplified this wonderfully, and it says so much with just a few basic strokes! Extremely well done Chana!!! Beautiful, I love it!
Thanks for your nice comment on mine.

Carol - Wonderful job with those Acrylic Inks! Very elegant hat and flowers and I love the leaves at her throat for a scarf! And her purple lipstick matches her hat. Beautiful work!

Kay - I knew you'd come up with something different! Well done you very clever girl!!!

Sandy - Ohhh, so cute…both the hat and the dog! A very different interpretation than most of us have done, and of course I love it!

Oh goody! There's more!

Kay--that's brilliant! What a cool idea...you came by your moniker honestly--very Kreative! And I love how your colors are always so rich and deep!

Sandy--what a lovely lady, from a time when ladies always wore hats--so nice! And the dog is very well done too...you really got the texture of the fur, and the playful gleam in his eye!

Judy--lovely modern Mona! We had a class assignment once to paint "flat" like Andy Warhol--it's harder than you might think! Well done!

Nur--great texture in this, both the straw of the hat and the wood decking beneath it. I'd pick it up and throw it on, especially on such a sunny day!

Now I'm going to page back through and admire them all over again! I love to go back and look in the light of other people's comments!

05-26-2014, 01:04 PM
I'm going to try and comment on all the lovely hats but I may be interrupted and need to stop before I'm finished. I'm expecting a computer expert to help me install my new printer.

Meggs, I love your Aussie Bush Basher! Attractive and useful, a terrific combination.

Viv, your beauty is exquisite. I just love the color of the hat. What is it called?

Oops, here he is. BBL.

I'll be back later to comment on these wonderful hats/hats and ladies - super stuff!

Meanwhile - this was one I did years ago from a ref by Dewi - it's on paper in ac. inks and one of my first inks pieces. Approx 12 x 8"

Hat and Hibiscus - for Dewi!

Oh, Maureen, I was hoping that you would include this in our Garden!! Outstanding work!! Wish I could wear this one around here!!   Size?

Thanks ladies - sorry K, I meant to go measure it! probably about 12 x 8" - I'll add it to the post.:o

I had to search for this - before my computer went haywire a couple of months ago I was so sure I'd backed up everything onto an external hard drive ...... something went awry though and almost all my PP work from past months/years is gone - kaput - disappeared into thin air :( ...... I've always kept a high res, large file of each work, plus a WC size for uploading - guess I'll have to trawl through here to find past works :( ....... and where the work has sold or been given away I can't re-do the scans!

Jean - absolutely super, all three - and so different in character. That 'lady of a certain age' is wxceptional - face, and light through the hat.

Dewi - theses are both lovely and so nice to see you painting again after all the trauma of the past many months!

Katherine -so elegant! I'd love to wear that huge hat! the straw bonnet is lovely too.

Lea - excellent straw for that hat! Bow and daisies superb too.

Indie - you'll soon get the hang of our Plant Parades! Thank you for joining us and painting this lovely hat ... vase is very good too.:)

Lil - these are both delightful and great faces beneath the titfers!:D (that 'hats')!:D

Chana - Elegant and exceptional - beautiful!

Carol - what a vamp she is! Lovely hat and face - and hope you enjoyed the inks!:)

Charlie's Mum
05-26-2014, 05:37 PM
Kay - this is tremendous! The sense of sunlight through leaves is lovely and all that extra patterning in a very subtle 'underpainting'.
I shall be looking at your Blog!

Sandy - that's very recognisably Renoir! Lovely!

Judy - another very elegant lady with a super hat I'd like to wear!:) My only suggestion would be to add shadow from the hat onto her face - add mystery!:D

Nur - superb straw hat! Is that the paper texture making the straw texture? It's great!

Do hope I haven't missed anyone!

I find this months 'Ladies and their Hats' really quite exciting - it's lovely seeing them all ...... super challenge Katherine:D

Thank you all for your nice comments on my painting. Everyone did a wonderful job this month:clap:

Meggs, what a colorful hat with gorgeous flowers, love it!

Viv, yours is a very elegant hat with perfect colors, great job with oil pastels.

Maureen, wow! it is so wonderful--love everything about it especially the ribbon. Your second one is outstanding--love those hibiscuses and their colors and yes, the straw texture is partly the paper (Fabriano) and also I used dry-on-dry tech.

Jean, another three perfect digi art from you -- my fav is the second one.

Dewi, both of your paintings are lovely--I like the one with purple flowers.

Katherine, two beauitiful hats--first one is so stylish but the second one is my favorite.

Lea, very nice composition and a great job with the hat and the ribbon.

Indie, nice still life painting--no worries, can easily pick a flower from the vase and put on that nice hat.

LIL, two beauitiful watercolors with great details, love them both.

Chana, what a gorgeous looking lady--love the way you painted it.

Carol, WOW!! very modern and attractive girl--love the hat and the floral details, perfect colors.

Sandy, Great painting--just perfect.

Judy, a very elegant and sophisticated lady--your title suits perfectly.

Katherine, thank you again for hosting a great challenge this month:clap:

Katherine, it was such fun this idea of having "hats" for this month, thank you for hosting and thank you for your nice comments. Everyone's hats were lovely. Didn't realize that I could've just done a hat with flowers but I went for the whole thing.

Katherine – Thank you for this month’s challenge. From the looks of the beautiful paintings, everyone had a lot of fun with this one. Your photos were wonderful.
Meggs – The Aussie spin on the floral hat was fun. Liked your bold colors as well.
Viv – Beautiful job with the pastels. The monochrome hat against the complementary colored background worked well.
Maureen – Your piece is so beautiful and delicate and evokes the essence of a floral hat. Very pretty. I later noticed your second painting. You are masterful with acrylic inks. It is gorgeous!
Jean – Lovely job on all three pieces. Something about the one with the older woman spoke to me, since you put so much character into the face. Nice job!
Dewi – Both hats are lovely. I am partial to the violet and green palette, which you used well. Love the drips in the background – they add a certain “mood”.
Katherine – Nice job on both paintings. Their styles are so different, it almost looks like two different artists painted them. How did you get that dramatic black background with watercolor?
Lea – I loved your painting. Your style reminds me of Renoir. Very nice!
Indiechixor – Great composition. It was nice to see a piece with a little more complexity to it.
Lil – Very nice job with the little ladies and their hats. The color palette that you chose worked well with the sweet subjects.
Chana – Stunning painting. You have amazing talent to mix all those colors, leave areas blank and the result is a knock out!
Kay – What an amazing technique! I wish I know how you did it. Very artistic and beautiful. My husband and I loved your piece.
Sandy – How clever of you to find this piece of Renoir. Your painting evokes the same feeling. Very nice.
Judy – Love the big, dramatic hat and the overall composition. Great job with the bold colors.
Cerann – I liked your piece very much. I was impressed with how you made it look like a straw hat with very few strokes here and there. Nice job.

Thanks everyone for the nice compliments on my work, but YOU made this month a success with the hats!

Thanks to the ones that provided their photos from the RIF, they were wonderful for this Challenge!!

Carol, to get that black in Watercolor, I used Perm. Alizarin Crimson and Pthalo Green (BS). I use Daniel Smith paints. Continue to mix them together and they will go to that black. (I then put the leftover paint in an uncovered container for the next painting or touch-ups.) I used a couple of coats to get the depth. Next time I will cover the bg as I paint because I lost a bit of the paint simply from the handling. Oh, and I did it first and with masking over all the edges. I did not think that I wanted to do it in reverse. . .I have done that before and it is a bit more work to me. :cat: Carol, there are lots of other 'recipes' for black from other combinations, but this one works for me.

Peeps, the Tea Party PP was really a blast!!  Hopefully a few more will post in the next day or so!! :crossfingers:

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

Katherine -- Thank you for the info on the black background. I do like the dramatic mood of it. :)

05-28-2014, 10:56 AM
Katherine....that black mixture looks good in your hat painting and the phalo green shows in the mix (very powerful pigment).....but if you want a black background why not just utilize carbon black, eliminating the need to mess around mixing?

This is the one I ruined with the masking - tried to hide it!:(

My hat and the frangipani is from a photo by Idylbrush - the plant is from his garden.

Maureen, it is wonderful!! Do not even think about the masking, it looks like a winner to me!!   Love the ribbon being so transparent at the edge of the brim!

Blue, in Watercolor we like to use a mixture in the black so that one part or the other will glow through like you see in the green.

Carol, hope it helps!! :cat:

Peeps, what a great month. . .now, the Garden needs to be constructed and I have a fab helper who is going to put it together for us. . .Viv!!   Thank you ever so much for your help!!

The May Plant Parade Tea Party is close to the end, but if you still have a painting, please feel free to post and we will get it into the Garden!

Thank you all for the fabulous month of beautiful hats and wonderfully lush flowers on top!!

Thank you Peeps :D

And Viv, thanks for doing K's Gallery too:)

K., maybe you should give blue's suggestion a try - no rules should stop us trying things!;) ....... and I say this as person who seldom uses black paint in any medium!;)

Hi, yesterday my post disappeared before uploading and no internet connection to PC after that.
Using doc sis (?) for phone, mobiles and other gadgets but for PC the signals always weak, bad or no signal at all.
Now start again, crossfingers.

Nur, beautiful one and yours was anchored nicely too.

Maureen, thank you so much for your trouble in searching for this very beautiful and fantastic work.
I think it was from the year 2005 when I was hosting WDE for the first time.
I remember in commenting the light which were coming through from hat's tiny holes too.
The last one is pretty... with transparent bow and lovely frangipani.

Thank you so much for your kind comments everyone you too Blue :)

Post right now before signal turns slow.

Hi 'girls'......I hate those contrived 'rules' of art!....I know that WC'ist like to make their own 'blacks' becauce it's a 'rule we follow'....bah humbug!!!

I utilize a lot of 'black backgrounds' for my floral paintings....it makes the bright flowers 'POP'.....people love it....in shows, it gets attention....you can see the painting clear across the room....

I hate the 'rules' so much, I'll sometimes put the center of interest right in the middle of the picture...and the horizontal line smack in the center....drives the 'educated by book learning judges' bananas!......

so Katerine, for a little excitment in your life, break a rule and do a carbon black background, glazed with 'fuchsia'......:D

Blue, remember, I am a new painter and have a science bg. . .I think in rules and it is a major adventure to cast them aside. I did look for a Watercolor that is called Carbon Black and only found one company that had it and I had never heard of the company before. Perhaps the major companies have another name for it? But, out of respect for you, I will put it on my 'think-about-it' list!! Thanks for the suggestions!! I need a lot of them!!

If you have not posted and you want to, Peeps, feel free. . .we still have more of May!!

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

I'm embarrassed at how long it has taken me to get back to commenting. It took most of Monday just getting my printer installed and working the way I wanted it, even with the help. Then life swooped in and took over. I haven't even had time to paint since then, but before I get before my easel I want to finish my commenting on the really lovely entries this month.

Maureen, your digi is just gorgeous. I am amazed at how painterly you make a digital look! Your second one in ac inks is stunning. I love the deep color of the blooms. Thanks for the suggestion for a shadow on mine. I'm often afraid shadows will ruin a painting, but I'll gather my courage and do this one. :)

Jean, what a lovely trio of entries. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite. What you can do with ArtRage is amazing.

Dewi, both your paintings are lovely but I especially like the second one. I admire how you give the impression of someone wearing it without any indication of facial features.

Katherine, what a terrific twosome you have entered. I especially like the flamboyance of the first.

Lea, your hat is exquisite. The hat has the look of a well worn and well loved piece and the flowers are lovely.

Indie, a great combination of vase of flowers with a hat. My hat is off to you for creating your own set up.

Lil, a beautiful twosome! The hats are lovely and the faces are delightful. I especially like the chubby cheeked little one.

Chana, what a truly stunning, dramatic piece! You certainly know your way around watercolor!

Carol, I really like the contemporary feel of your painting and the colors are stunning.

Kay, I am continually amazed at your creativity of what you can do to rescue a "failed" painting and turn it into something entirely new and delightful.

Sandy, you have painted a scene from one of my favorite paintings. Renoir would be pleased.

Nur, your hat is just beautiful. I especially like the texture you achieved.

I think that catches me up on commenting. If I missed anyone, please let me know so I can rectify it. And thank you everyone for your kind comments on my "Mona."

Katerine....I'm just trying to put a little excitment into your 'mundane' life....

and if 'carbon black' is exciting, so be it!....

P.S.....just saw that Golden, which makes excellent acrylics that I have used for years, now makes a new line of watercolors, including 'carbon black'...just for your info....always here to help!....

Blue, why not participate and sign up for a month then you can have your own choice (within reason  ) of colour, plant, whatever in the botanical world you choose :D

05-31-2014, 11:14 AM
Maureen, I love that last hat, and didn't see anything wrong with it...whatever you did to fix the problem must have worked!

Viv, the gallery is beautiful!

And Katherine, the challenge was great, and resulted in some fabulous paintings! I'm so glad I took the challenge and created my own reference so I could participate. Thanks for the stretch!

05-31-2014, 11:14 AM
No, thank you.....just trying to help Viv....she said she didn't have a theme for July.....I enjoy you 'girls' work and comments very much but I'm a shrinking violet when it comes to anything beyond a comment or two....:D

Blue - You a shrinking violet???!!!
Thanks for the idea of a "White" theme for when I host in July. Its a good idea and I dont think its been used for a while.

05-31-2014, 09:36 PM
a shrinking violet
   Viv, it's just a joke from Blue!!
Wait until Meryl and Carol get wind of this! :clear: :clear:

What a pleasant month this has been! Very successful because we had a lot of participation, but we have been short of men, I noticed! Let's hope they will participate. . .clear my throat. . .Blue. . .in the next month's challenge! :crossfingers:

Mmmmm. . .Marion, is it time yet???. . .

Viv, I like to go back over the very first PP's and think about those challenges that we didn't do, except for Maureen, perhaps. There are some very good ideas there.

Hugs, Katherine :music: :music:

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't participated much - but my pile of half finished paintings is growing! Nice work everyone on this challenge, I really wanted to participate but things got in the way, as they do:)

I've just waved the family off at the airport and will be back for the June challenge later today or tomorrow morning after I've had time to recuperate after all the visitors.

Just thinking about a challenging challenge mmm.. :D

Beautiful work all!

Well I know I'm late, and we were supposed to paint a hat with flowers on it.

But I searched for hats in the RIL, and who could refuse this little guy?http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/14-Jul-2014/52365-image.jpg

Didn't do him justice, but no matter how long it took me to get to it, I had to try!

07-15-2014, 11:14 AM
He's adorable, Cleo! You do super work!

07-15-2014, 02:07 PM
Cleo, he does have a hat and we will pretend that he ate the flowers!!
