View Full Version : White Rose

Last Wednesday, the gardener at the hospital Memory Garden of the clinic I visit every two weeks gave me a beautiful white rosebud and I salvaged a small pink one from the pile of blown roses she was taking off. The little dusty pink rose didn't open any farther than its last rendering but I got plenty of photos before it wilted. All three of these are in my 7" Stillman & Birn "Delta" journal, which has 180lb rough watercolor paper that's a warm white in real life.

First rendering in colored pencils, begun while waiting for the van the day I got the rose. Light initial sketch in pencil with the CP work done during the ride and finished at home. Prismacolor Watercolor pencils.

Pencil rendering on Friday 4-25-2014, done with a 6B lead in a Turquoise lead holder, same paper. I love that 6B lead for sketching, it's a little dark for sketching under other media but by itself is so soft and smudgy it has a lovely texture, and gets great darks. Some finger shading involved.

Then today, while the rose is quite open but still hasn't shown its center, is starting to be just a hair droopy...

I am having fun with the progression and decided to share all the iterations in one thread. I might still do one or two more if the flower doesn't fade, or do one of it wilted even when it does.

Lovely to see all these Robert - good value from one open rose and a bud!:)
It's also very nice to see the different mediums used for similar subjects.

I'm also enjoying seeing the roses in different mediums Robert! That's great you got so many drawings/paintings out of them. Really interesting to see the progression from bud to open rose.
