I really do not fully understand a good amount of how art is defined. Is surrealism considered contemporary? Abstract?

I tried working with a sample set of oils, came up with this.

18x22 oil on canvas

C and C welcome and appreciated

OMG!

This just got my attention and held it.

very well conceived
very well painted

and let's not get into the "abstract or not " argument.
It has no real answer, not does it matter

This is so captivating! This makes me think of some women who give of themselves so totally that they are so giving of themselves that they become vessels pouring themselves out completely.

While this is beautifully painted, the thumb on the hand holding the top of the vessel is out of proportion with the rest of the hand. Other than that it is just about flawless. Bravo!

bird: Thank you! I didn't mean to start a whole what is art sort of debate, I wanted to make sure this was posted in the right area.

Jim: Thank you! I took your input and lobbed off part of her thumb. Updated version:

The sun is hitting it so it shows some shine.

great concept, I would call this piece surreal, but since there is no forum specifically for surrealism, other works like this have been posted here as well (in the contemporary category).
I think Jim so beautifully analyzed this painting, it has a wonderful sense of movement in a very poetic way.
