I happened to have some flowers that I thought might be nice to try to paint, but I can't figure out the best way to light them so that the light and shadows help create the form of the individual petals that overlap. I played around and it seemed from the side and slightly above was better than the other options but still not the best. Is there a better way to do it?

Try playing with the distance of the light from your subject as well.Try the lighting coming more from behind. Have you tried taking them outdoors? On a bright sunny day, and with the light coming from above you can obtain great shadows. Don't give up!

You might try a second light source from a different direction. I would make this second source less intense that the main source. Either dim it or move it farther away.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the flowers have another day or so left, so I'll try again.
