Welcome to the March Edition of the Plant Parade.

This month our choice of plant is the the auricula/primrose/primula family, a brave little flower that endures snow, frost and ice and still comes up smiling in the sun!

The images here are all from the RIL, click on the image and it will take you to the plants pages in the library - click on the image there to access the larger, higher res., image.

If you use an image from elsewhere please make sure it's copyright-free.

You may, of course, work from life too :)

There are few rules:)

Crop, enlarge, distort, play, manipulate a reference in any way you wish.

Explore the shapes, patterns, growth and formation of this little plant.

All media welcome - 2D, 3D, mixed and collaged if you wish:D

Any method of applying the medium is acceptable too ;)

Discuss, banter with others about your choice(s), your successes, finds and/or difficulties in this thread, but reveal nothing until 25th March!

If you subscribe to the thread it's easier to keep up with all the communications.:)

Ohhhh, so pretty! I see several I'd like to paint...thanks for Hosting Maureen.
Yes, we sure are in a different Season - 1st March today and the beginning of Autumn for us....I think here in the Southern part of the world, we've missed Summer entirely!:(

02-28-2014, 08:40 PM
Thanks Maureen for looking after us

Yes, we sure are in a different Season - 1st March today and the beginning of Autumn for us....I think here in the Southern part of the world, we've missed Summer entirely!:(

and we still have about 3/5 feet of snow so those little flowers wouldn't have a chance

Very timely Maureen.
The other day, my friend and neighbour came with a big box of these with all different colours. She saw them and thought of me - isn't that nice. I really will have to paint them now. The question is - Can I manage to paint all eight of them!

Thanks for hosting

Charlie's Mum
03-01-2014, 06:36 AM
Sorry Viv - I know what it's like to miss summer!

Jean - if winter is gone, can spring be far behind? - (of course it can, our weather patterns are so strange and don't recognise the calendar!!!!)

Marion - even one of them painted like the hibiscus would be delightful:lol: - have you planted yours yet? ...... and if you want to share the plant pictures for others, please do!:)

03-01-2014, 09:34 AM
Thanks for the lovely flowers Maureen and for hosting this month. I think the whole planet is experiencing strange weather patterns this year. What will Spring be like, if it ever gets here in the northeast.

03-01-2014, 10:40 AM
Lil, it 'sprang' here this morning but grey clouds have chased it away! ... but those little flowers are still blooming in the garden :D

03-01-2014, 01:21 PM
Beautiful references, Maureen....might have to try one! :) Wish I'd have popped in and noticed the hibiscus last month... just posted some over in Acrylics. It's hard for me to remember to poke my head into each of the challenges...I get caught up in too much, I guess.

03-01-2014, 01:49 PM

03-01-2014, 04:28 PM
These are so lovely Maureen, thank you for hosting.

I've been watching petal painting on youtube so think I just may be ready for some petals and leaves this month.

03-01-2014, 10:50 PM
Lovely primula/primroses! Certainly don't see them in west Texas where it was 82 F today; all is blooming but a very icy cold front rolls in tomorrow night.

Good girl M - and glad you're here!:D

I'm stuck for time :(

03-17-2014, 03:03 PM
I don't know if I will have time to paint a picture this month, but I have sure enjoyed the primrose theme. I've had primroses on the brain. I've pulled out old reference photographs of them. I've bought a primrose plant. I've even planted primrose seeds...hey...I've blogged about them too. Happy Primroses to you all! :)

Charlie's Mum
03-17-2014, 07:08 PM
Oh Kathy, if you've done all that you surely have to paint a primrose too! Pretty please? :D

03-18-2014, 05:33 PM
Wow....waiting until next week is hard... teach me to finish on the fifth...sigh!!

Vivien Maloney
03-18-2014, 05:47 PM
That's my problem also Susan - always leaving it to the last few days and hoping against hope that it turns out well enough to post!:crossfingers:

BUT in saying that...I'm beginning mine today, Maureen.

Charlie's Mum
03-18-2014, 06:07 PM
I wish I was starting mine!:(

03-18-2014, 06:20 PM
I had better start soon :(

Vivien Maloney
03-19-2014, 03:07 AM
Maureen - I have finished mine this afternoon! No, I can't believe it either!:)
I wanted to have a real try at PansPastels, as I've only played about a bit with them in the past...so once I got started I couldn't stop....so I've finished it!!!!:D
Hopefully this will make up for the mistake I made when posting my entry for the Animal & Wildlife Challenge today...I posted it as Wednesday 20th March, only to discover (via Skappy) that today in NZ, was Wednesday 19th March, so I was a day early!!!! :( How embarrassing!
Oh me, oh my! I will be known on Wet Canvas forever more, as the Moderator who is always a day ahead of herself! But at least I've finished my entry for this Challenge..hope I get Brownie points for that?!

Charlie's Mum
03-19-2014, 07:30 AM
Lol Viv - better than trailing behind - as I am at the moment ....... not in enough to do anything, and DH is using my studio space and table to make new patio furniture for the holiday home ...... and he can't get on with that either! ...... sigh ....... things will settle sometime :)

03-19-2014, 11:20 PM
I made a start on this project but I've been really sick, so there is no hope of finishing it this month. But I'll be watching, at least.

Vivien Maloney
03-20-2014, 01:07 AM
Maureen - yes I know how life gets in the way of art and what we want to do. Hope your hubby gets the patio furniture finished soon so you get your art space back :)

Karen - sorry to hear you have been ill. Hope you are recovering now. Hugs for you. :)

Charlie's Mum
03-20-2014, 12:27 PM
Aw Karen, that's awful ... you being sick I mean! Get well soon :)

03-20-2014, 03:19 PM
Karen, hope you feel better soon . I will see if I can get one done but I can only sit at my comp for a short time as I hurt my back trying to lift my 100 lb. dog and as I only weigh 90 lbs. it was a stupid thing to try :o

Vivien Maloney
03-20-2014, 04:13 PM
Jean - sorry youve hurt your back lifting your dog! He sounds like a big dog - I could never even attempt to lift my beloved Newfounland/Labrador (who passed away recently), she was 50klgms, so I dont know how that would relate to lbs? Hope your back comes right soon and you can enjoy your art again.

03-22-2014, 05:02 PM
Thanks Viv, my back is almost back to normal now and Dutch is about the same as yours :D

and I did it, I did it, got one ready for this month

03-23-2014, 07:12 PM
Thanks everyone.
This latest bug is the worst. I just cough and cough and every time I think it's getting better, it just comes back again. My hubby and grandson are a week ahead of me, and still coughing, so I know I have at least another week of this yet. Not fun. :( But I have started to get back my life a bit, and as long as I don't over do it, maybe there's hope. I'm going to be very busy doing everyone's taxes for a while now though, and I still have to redesign our club booklet. That's not going to be a picnic either since my new computer won't open files from the program I had for 30 years, and that program will not load on this computer, and apparently is no longer available, so I have to start over with an unfamiliar one. Sigh. All I want to do is paint, but I guess I won't have time for a while yet.
Can't wait to see the paintings this month. I hope I can play with you next month at least!

Vivien Maloney
03-23-2014, 11:44 PM
Karen - hope you are feeling better soon!

Tomorrow is Tuesday 25th for us here in NZ, and Australia, and for once I'm all ready to post and I'm actually quite pleased with my effort...so looking forward to posting tomorrow.

03-24-2014, 10:00 AM
Ok , Im heading off for a few days, with no internet available, so Im posting a few hours early. I really enjoy this months challenge, and it was lovely to be able to find time to sit and paint again.

All are Acrylic, A4 canvas Pad.

Meggs - They are all lovely, you've been very busy! I like them all but particularly the last deep violet one! But they're all beautifully rendered!

Well here's mine. I"ve only got one done but really enjoyed painting with PansPastels. Usually I only block in with the Pans but this time I've done the whole painting with them.
20cm x 25cm - PansPastels on Mi-Teintes paper

03-24-2014, 02:59 PM
Meggs, they are all beautiful but do love that 2nd one and the colours

Viv, a lovely delicate flower

03-24-2014, 03:01 PM
I found this a very hard flower to paint but here it is ArtRage as always :D

03-25-2014, 02:29 AM
Meggs I do like the first one with its vivid colors.
Vivien, beautiful pastel.
Jean, great stuff.
I just had to try out my oil pastels again.

03-25-2014, 07:45 AM

I enjoyed taking part in this month's plant parade. Thanks Maureen for the lovely flower you chose. I used an old reference photo I found laying about for mine. Meggs, Vivien, Jean and Christal, each one of your paintings is lovely. The colors are outstanding in each.

03-25-2014, 08:46 AM
Wow, some gorgeous florals appearing here now with the theme chosen. Here is my attempt, titled Primula Pail, 6x6 watercolor/ink line wash with Micron 01 pen on Masters paper.

03-25-2014, 10:17 AM
Lovely flowers Meggs, Vivian and Kay. Here is my attempt for this month. The lovely colors of yellow, gold and red attracted me to these beauties, done in acrylic on this rough canvas paper. Thanks Jean for hosting.

03-25-2014, 10:36 AM
Lovely flowers so far, well done everyone.

I am new to this forum, but not to WetCanvas. I love painting/drawing flowers so don't know why I hadn't visited this forum before. I am trying to improve my skills with watercolor so I painted the red/yellow primulas with watercolor on watercolor paper, size is small, 3.5 x 5 inches.

Better late than never!:)

Meggs - these really are good floral examples of the plant! Well observed and very nicely painted on both flowers and leaves.

Viv - how gorgeous is this? Lovely smooth work on the petals and beautiful bumps on the leaves. :D Gorgeous!

Jean, such a lovely delicate yellow - pretty!

Christel, such lovely delicacy with the OPs - good observation and lovely colour!

Kathy - really like your use of the medium in this, so pretty, delicate and spring-like - captures the light very well. Another beautiful interpretation.

Kay - ab-fab colours as always! Really like these bunched primulas and the bucket is a great addition ... lovely w/colours.

Lil - well painted and really love how those flowers hold their faces to the sun, absorbing the light and warmth!

katwalk/Kathy - welcome to the PP! so glad to have you and hope you'll join us next month too.:)
Your primulas are also really well observed and hold the light Nice work!

Chana - I'm speechless - this is jaw-droppingly gorgeous! :clap::clap:
My one crit would be the base of the vase - the back is coming forward .... but I'd looked lots of times before deciding to say anything!

Susan - bold and beautiful! It's gorgeous and would brighten any room!

Thank you all for joining your often-absent-hostess this month! I hope to make a Gallery but I'm struggling with WC 'housekeeping' and limited access at the mo ...........

If you are getting hundreds of email notifications, the Tech Staff are aware of the problem, I'm told .......... similarly multiple posts and error messages about the database - usually a post does go through - eventually!

I love primroses, and when I saw the lovely reference photos here I had to try one, even though it's late.

I flipped Auricula by Plec on it's end and painted it that way, I like the composition better.

This isn't what I envisioned at all, lol. Let's call it an interpretation.:D I may try it again... This is watercolor, watercolor pencils and Faber Castell artist pen.

I just had to share this. I was at our local garden show this weekend and one of the garden centres had hundreds of this Primula Blue Zebra in their display. I had to buy one, of course. :D I'll try to paint it before the flowers fade. It's a lovely denim blue. I'll load a few images of them into the RIL. Anyone is welcome to use the image below.
