Are those all composited for the final image, or were they references / intermediate steps?

As shown above layers 1 and 2 are completely independent "sketches." Layers 3 and 4 are composites of 1 and 2 each composited differently. Layers 5 and 6 are based on the composites but are actually different in geometry. I did not have to completely re-draw that is the beauty of Digital- however I did adjust the image to eliminate a lens distortion that is an artifact of the source. I probably should have done that from the beginning but it didn't bother me as much in the sketch stage. By making use of the first two sketches for the majority of the work the amount of finish work needed to get the final image was kept to a minimum. Because my process involves saving layers as "history" the total number of layers created was actually 16. The ones presented show the bulk of the work.
