This is my rendition - WIP of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. My first attempt at copying a master (I think he qualifies as a master). Hoping this is the correct place to post it... I have not studied his methods, I'm just trying to paint and learn.

I used a grid to get the basic shapes, but did no detailed drawing.
Oil on canvas 24"x48" - which is a wider aspect ratio than the original.
Here is the original - as a reminder - the peach area is where I have added.

I have one more window on the background building.
I have had 5 sessions painting in so far, and I imagine I will do another 5 or 6
I have some youtube and Vimeo time-lapse movies.

great painting, and it was fun to watch your method.

I think it is a good start, you have gotten the architectural elements in place. The original has a mood about it, partially due to the green atmosphere. I think if you try and capture that it would give your painting more of a mood. Of course that can come later with some glazes. I think you should fix the coffee machines 1st, as the odd, bright white from the canvas shape is now the focal point of your painting, which makes it hard to look at everything else.

This is one of my most favorite paintings. Looks simple, right? But getting into it is not so simple. The greens as Allison said set that mood and the the peach colors on the far building must be spot on.

Keep at it. You've a great start!

I did use some greens in most of my underpainting - I was concerned the interior is too green - not yellow enough. It has progressed some since these photos - the coffee brewers were not even touched yet in this. My latest is here (http://rastermon.net/images/Nighthawks6mid.jpg)
