View Full Version : WDE Jan 17 -Tropic birds.....Third Strike

Thanks for hosting and the great pics Christine. I remember seeing these amazing birds on the west coast.
Not what I envisaged when I started this - which is normal for me  I didn't want a tight painting so I attempted to use one large brush but as usual resorted to smaller ones to fiddle.
I'm not too happy with this so I still might do some more fiddling.
Starte with watercolour and resorted to gouache - 35 x 21cm
Crits always welcomed.

Good one! I like it:)

Well I like it Ros!
Love those red bits in their tails - missed those in the ref, must look!
I like the colouring throughout though, gives a lovely impression of warmth.

I like it too, wish I could learn to paint more loose!

I think it's a wonderful. When you struggle with something, it's always good to put it away for a few days, and look at it again with fresh eyes. Maybe you'll see a few little things to add, but I don't think it needs much.

Great color and I'm with Susan, wish I could learn to be more loose in my painting. I always resort to those smaller brushes as well. I don't really think this painting needs anything else either.

Love this Ros - they remind one of love birds - would make a lovely Valentine's day card.

Great job and I went back and looked at the ref because I remembered their name but did not actually see the red tails until now!

They are gorgeous and relaxed looking, I am glad you included their red tails they were a little hard to see in the photo. Love it.

Very pretty! I have seen Tropic birds on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. They are beautiful birds.

Ros, you did a great job of the 'love birds'!

These are lovely. I didn't notice the red either.

I really like this. When I saw the photo I wondered why they mentioned the red in the name. Now I see why. Have to go back and look at the photo again as I totally missed it there.

Ros, This is excellent. Love all your shades of "white" highlighted by the gouache I'm guessing. When you have gouache or pastels at your service, I see no reason not to use them for such a beautiful result :)
The old "must leave white paper" for watercolors has been a thing of the past since Turner and Sargent added so much gouache to their paintings, with rather great results. (Saw the Sargent Watercolor exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston last weekend. Lovely to be nose to nose with the actual paintings, almost.)

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
I did more fiddling - I always wanted to have a go with pastel over watercolour - nothing to lose
1st strike watercolour - 2nd gouache - 3rd - pastel. Three strikes and I'm out - but then there is acrylic too
Let me know what you think - did it work or should I just stick to watercolour?

I like them both.
01-23-2014, 05:50 AM
I like both too - maybe prefer the w/c - but different versions are good to see!:D
01-23-2014, 06:59 AM
Love them both Ros the pastel is very lively

I love all the colours you brought in with the pastel. It definitely worked. I love them all.
