View Full Version : Do I need to prepare this surface?

I'm doing a mixed media work involving glossy magazine pages. Do I need to prepare the pages in any way for the OP, or can I just draw straight on them? (This will be mounted eventually.) Thanks!

Happy to meet you. Oil Pastels never fully dry, so you'll want to keep that in mind - they'll harden, but years later you'll still be able to go in and smear the oil pastel.
For getting clean coverage, oil pastels needs a surface that has at a minimum modest amount of texture for the OPs to grip the surface. If you are painting on magazine pages I'd think that the OPs will be greasy and you'll not able to spread the paint.
If the pages can handle a light coat of clear gesso, you'd be able to apply a small layer of OPs - but typically pages aren't in a form for liquid application and a good amount of buckling will occur.
Hope this helps. Sorry my reply is late in coming I've been away.
