7.5x9 gouache on partially gessoed light blue matboard, done this afternoon with 1 hour painting time. Ellies were drawn with Staedtler 03 liner pen. Last week I had applied one coat of white gesso at random on the Crescent mat scrap, so if you count that time, add about 10 minutes prep time :cat:
This scan shows to be a bit darker than the actual work. Thank you, Joel, for the lovely images!
C&C welcome

This is wonderful Kay, I love the grass and the sense of movement as those beautiful elephants make their ponderous way through it.

I'm not usually inclined to look at at elephant paintings, because they always seem so drab. But in light of the animals you've done lately, I knew I better make an exception. I was not disappointed. Outstanding

This is great Kay - love the ellies sauntering through the high grass - you can almost feel their lumbering pace.

Wow Kay this is enthralling! I love the way you added colors - especially the blue sky at the far end. The foreground grass is outstanding as well as the rendering of the elephants' skin. Overall a great piece! Thank you so much for participating!

Thanks everyone! They're hard to do for me as I'm a colorist, and their hide is so grey brown neutral! In the foreground had to add some hot orange blooms just to spice it up.

Love your elephants and all the grasses, but the bright red is off putting and doesn't seem to belong. Then, you said the colors were darker than in real life, so orange might look good in the original.

so different from the intenseness of Dean's rendering... sweet, lighter... maybe.... honey, the unfortunate choice of 'blood red' in the front plain-ole hurts to look at.... then I read that you said flowers... maybe stems needed or something... a bush??.... as a graphics person, right now it looks to me like a statement: lovely day, nice stroll... KER POW.... I'm sorry....:(

As I said, I used hot orange which is transparent pyrrol orange by Daniel Smith...it just looks red but is not. My scanner made everything look darker value.

Love your colors, Kay!

Viewer interpretation...I understand what Kor means. Because that's what I see now that she has mentioned it. But the original meaning of flowers was my first response. Plus the color orange would be a relief from blood red.
Hope you don't mind me jumping in.

I like the ellies and their setting and the grass colour ..... I thought 'brilliant splashing for the flowers' then read Kor's thought. Could be taken either way - a ref. to their plight ..... doesn't take anything away from the work!

Kay... I was going to apologize in 'private msg', but figured I mouthed off in public, I better apologize the same way.... I'm so sorry.... "a reference to their plight"... Mum's sweet comment; yes, that's what I felt, but having 'felt', should have walked on and shut up... I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to take away from your post, please know that.... :o Penitent NonnyKor
