I am currently student teaching and preparing a unit for 9/10 grade called Past, Present, and Future. The students pieces will be a triptych where on each panel they are going to represent themselves w/o doing a self portrait in the past present and future...
I have a 40 minute period for the critique w/ 17 kids in the class. Does anyone have fun/creative suggestions for a critique?

Sounds like a challange I would keep it simple to get through you only have a few minutes with each one....I would look for something good in each one first then if something really stands out as not so good you could help them by telling them how it could be changed to make it better...good luck! I have had to do these and its best not to look at the work first keep your mind clear.

my design basics teacher had a rather nice way of critiqueing, simply because it was a basic level course and didn't know who was use to a true critique and who wasn't. he pick one student to critique another, they had to chose one good thing and one thing they might have done differently. which wasn't as harash as breaking a piece down to the bare elements like i'm use too, but it is alot safer on feelings of people involved. and of course the teacher said something positive about it too. so it was a nice atmosphere for all invloved.

Thanks for your thougths and that is a good idea it gets others used to giving a crit when lots of people are so unsure they don't really know what to say but almost anyone can look at a peice of work and pick one nice thing and one thing that could use improvment in there eyes.

I do my critiques exactly as described by saralindsey. I explain the rules, so to speak, that they can't say things like "that stinks" or "it doesn't look right." The first couple of critiques I help them along and get the students used to the idea and give suggestions of how they might improve it, following with ultimately it is your decision. Eventually the kids get into it, and it is a great learning tool for them to start seeing the work with a critical eye. The great thing is after a while, they start looking at each others work and giving positive suggestions without my help.

WELCOME stef
For fun, you might use certain PAST AND FUTURE words, limiting them to finding a way to say what they think in those terms
saralindsey is spot on for structure with that age group
or even...since it is a triptich......they can use 3 words....lots of ways to get it done
GOOD luck
Let us know how it goes

Give them quidelines, what to say and how to say it. I ask my students to identify the thing they like most and what might make it more successful. Try and keep it positive. Good luck.
