This on strathmore 140.9x12.davinci paints. Trying for little loose effect, any suggestions? James

A nice beginning. I would suggest adding some dark values on the distant rocks where the water waves hit against it. That would make the white waves pop. It would also draw the viewer's eye there.

This is off to a really nice start, James.
I like the cloud bank above the horizon line meeting the storm dark sky.
The water looks choppy and watery. ;)
The dark green mass in the lower left corner could use some variation and suggestion of grass within it since you have it showing at its edges. Maybe moisten it and blot with a tissue to add some lights and darks mingling, then stroke in the grass over it. :D

I think you managed to make the water look, rough, choppy with those short brushstrokes. I'll be anxious to see it finished. I agree that the green foliage on the left needs more variations of colors.

Your water and sky are both great! I'm a little concerned that the foreground grasses on the left thatare a dark bluish green, and the green on the distant headlands is bright green. I think if it were the other way around it would help the perspective.
