Welcome to the November Edition of the Plant Parade.

This month our choice of plant is the Chrysanthemum, in all, or any part of, its glory!

The images here are all from the RIL,

-the challenge this month is to try to work from LIFE if you can.
For most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, 'Mums' are in abundance at this time of year - for our 'downunder' members, you may need the images!!!

There are few rules:)

Crop, enlarge, distort, play, manipulate a reference in any way you wish.

Marvel in the colour, shapes and patterns of this glorious example of Nature.

All media welcome - mixed if you wish:D

Discuss, banter with others about your choice(s), your successes, finds and/or difficulties in this thread, but reveal nothing until 25th November!

If you subscribe to the thread it's easier to keep up with it.:)

Wow, go Katherine!,, Well done for your early start!

11-01-2013, 04:34 AM
Oh my goodness  all those petals. This really is a challenge Maureen.

But a good excuse to go and buy more flowers :D

11-01-2013, 05:07 AM
I might have a go at them with my new Neocolors II - bought them on Tuesday and I simply love them!

11-01-2013, 01:49 PM
Viv, it was just that I had already decided to challenge myself and it has a million petals, but onward!! :D

Ulla, can't wait to see how your new Neocolors II work!!

Marion, you will have such fun with this one and make it just sing!!

Wheeee. . .mmmmm. . .have our Mission House Art Show on the 9th and that will slow me down, but I intend to keep it going. This is our 6th year. . .I show and help organize it. It is a labor of love for the MH and our Art Teacher, Genny, that passed away with cancer three days after our first show. We all worked in the MH together and she was so proud of it!!

Hugs, Peeps!!

11-02-2013, 10:12 AM
Hi Maureen, wow, what a challenge with all those petals on those mums. Will try to give it a go. Thanks for hosting.

11-02-2013, 12:10 PM
Beautiful photos! That last one has LOTS of different colors in it.

11-02-2013, 01:02 PM
So sorry to post and then leave you all in the lurch! .... but I'm home now and once the laundry for our other place is done and put away, I can get back to painting!Yippee!!! :D

Glad to see 'Mum' painters/artists signing up already:) ...... need to go and buy some pot mums or a bunch of 'em ... really want to paint from life this month - much too long since I did!:D

Katherine - best of luck for 9th

11-02-2013, 06:47 PM
The references are so tempting but it's a good excuse for hubby to buy me some chrysanthemums. I want to paint cheerful, bright chrysanths because for me they have some association with funerals and D.H. Lawrence's 'Odour of Chrysanthemums' which I studied at school.
So, lovely bright Autumnal flowers. What a super challenge.:)

Holy cow!!! That first pic is terrific. I just might have to have a go at this. Got some new scratch boards. I have never done scratch board so that photo is very inspiring for it.

Margaretta - there's such a variety in the flower isn't there - not all funerary!!:D
They're also November's birthday flowers:D

C - I do hope you give the scratch a try - it can be fantastic ..... it'll also be good to have you drawing again:D

11-03-2013, 12:46 PM
Haha Maureen! I promise not to paint a funerary tribute....lots of people have them in their wedding bouquets too!:cat:

Vivien Maloney
11-03-2013, 01:24 PM
Katherine - Good luck with your Show - hope you sell lots of paintings.

Ulla - I love Neocolors II, they are so versatile as you can wash them down with water. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.:D

Maureen - I've checked out the Garden Centres and see they are selling Chrysies in pots (as of course they are out of Season here). I think I might go and buy one, then I could paint it....the flowers not the pot! ;)

11-03-2013, 02:22 PM
Although I do have some mums in our garden, and in pots (my husband's garden, I should say), I'm not sure about painting something with that many petals from life!!! Yikes! I think we have wild chrysanthemums in our garden actually... they have fewer petals, and I've painted them before...

I'm also not sure how much time I'll have this month. I have to gear up for the Christmas baking, and we're hosting Thanksgiving this year, and I need to sell some jewelry while people are buying for Christmas, and there's always my paying job, and family obligations... we'll see. I do like mums...

Charlie's Mum
11-03-2013, 06:31 PM
Oh Lea - a teeny-tiny space for a simple (not huge mop) chrysanth? ... hmmm? ...... pretty please? :)

Viv - no reason why you couldn't also paint the pot ... might look very pretty with flowers round the rim

11-04-2013, 12:25 PM
Thanks, Viv. . .me too! :D

Hugs, Peeps!!

11-04-2013, 08:21 PM
As much as I'd love to play with you lot again this month, I really cannot do it. I have too much on my plate and so little time time to get it all done as it is. Sigh. I'll likely jump back in in January though....if I realize it is January when the time comes. Often too tired after the holidays to know what day it is, let alone what month. LOL

Have fun. I'll try to at least peak in and see what everyone is up to.

Hi everyone:wave: Thanks Maureen for choosing this lovely flower--it will be a nice start for me painting again after a looooooooong summer/autumn vacation.

11-08-2013, 11:09 AM

Maureen, it's easy - ignore the housework and the phone:evil: :wink2:

Vivien Maloney
11-14-2013, 01:42 PM
True!!! And add ignore the gardens to that list too..late Spring/early Summer here...lots of hot weather at last, equals; a garden jungle of weeds! Very shortly I'll need a chainsaw to cut my way into it.
You know I've always had this wonderful dream of sitting in my garden, painting and sketching the flowers. It's never happened. By the time I've finished gardening, I'm too tired to paint at all.:D

11-14-2013, 02:07 PM
I sent my hubbie out to do the digging as I want to rearrange a garden bed. I had to front up today though to do some planting

This gave me a giggle Viv - exactly how I feel!
In 13 years with this garden I can count on one hand the times I've managed to go out to draw! Each Spring, I renew my hope!!

Also - we took the chainsaw to a lot of our garden back in the spring!!!!

Marion, I can ignore the phone and housework - it's the other half I can't ignore!!!! ....... he needs a new hobby ;)

I did get a surface prepped for the painting though - so some progress!

Keep at it Carol :)

Maureen - I'm going to be away for about 3days and as I haven't finished my Chrysanthemum painting, I'm taking it with me to finish. So I won't be the first to post this month as I usually do. :music: :music:
I'm taking my tablet with me, so I'll have broadband and be able to comment, but I don't know how to send a completed painting to Wet Canvas on it. I've only had the tablet a short time so I'm still learning how to use it. I wish I knew how to post my painting to WC by it, but I will probably have to wait until I get home on Tue/Wed to post on my main computer....sorry.:o
I did hope to have finished...even that whip didn't hurry me up!

Lol Viv, I bought the flowers a week ago and am just about to start mine now  ..... so no worries!
sometimes time just flies away without us!!!!

From my Samsung tablet, I make sure the image is saved to the Gallery, then it's a straightforward upload as normal.
Haven't tried it from the iPad!

11-23-2013, 10:19 AM
HiYa All, Got the fidgets and cant sleep, and we are storm free at the moment so safe to have the computer on.

We are experiencing lines of storms here, every afternoon and night without fail... so far hail hasnt hit here... :crossfingers:

I have one completed for the 25th.. have done 3 but last 2 got binned. Feeling very despondent with painting flowers at the moment, the 'Sods' are beating me...
Tomorrow Im starting on the house, lets hope my edging skills have improved there.

Oh Meryl, they are both lovely but I must admit I like the white one best, such gorgeous shading in the shadow colors, so delicate and beautiful!

11-24-2013, 05:35 PM
Im away from home for a couple of days so Im posting on my Tablet via the Internet by my phone....if that sounds complicated, it does to me too, but my son set it up for me and it seems to work ok.

Maureen, I know how to send my photo of my painting and Ive discovered I have got Photoshop on my Tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1 I think the same as yours), so I can resize it in that but how do I get out of the Tutorials to put the resized photo into my Gallery so I can send it? Its all very confusing to me! I take my hat off to all those who are a whizz with computers but Im unfortunately, not one of them! :o Maybe Ill just wait until I get home and I can send it via my NORMAL computer!   :o

Charlie's Mum
11-24-2013, 06:20 PM
Actually Viv, that's probably the wisest course - the tablet can change the image when it's changed to jpeg - it's degraded the quality of mine before ... may have been my fault, don't know!
You do have to save the image to the Gallery - that turns it to Jpeg and gives access when uploading.

Meryl - these are both lovely pieces - well observed - but I like the white one too!!!:)

Posting mine now too - it's only a couple of hours to midnight and I'm off to bed soon!

Acrylic on mountboard approx 18 x 30cms - painted from life - on a board I prepared a while ago from left-over paint!

Oh M, I love what you have done. Just love it.

Meggs, great stuff. Pink is a hard colour to work with but I think you have done good with it. Love the white as well.

Mine is still under way. I can't believe that I am so far along as it has been such a busy month for me with grants to write, grants to review and manuscripts to write. Any way it is abou 3/4 done :) I am happy that this week is thanksgiving so I should get it done.

11-24-2013, 09:46 PM
Meggs, two beauties both white and pink
Holy smokes Maureen that is stunning

Here's my efforts for this month :D

This is a crop of a posting by Narcisse

and thought these mums posted by madmum would make a nice card :D

11-25-2013, 12:20 AM
Meryl, Maureen and Jean, awesome paintings! Here's mine. A3 with Reeves ops.

11-25-2013, 03:21 AM
Mine are inspired by a book on Ikebana given to me by a friend and a lot of artistic license:lol:
All are in oils and painted with a palette knife and lots of paint on canvas panel.

1.22x27cm (approx 9"x11")
I liked the effect of this one and got carried away

2. 18x24 (approx 7x10")
This is the least successful and I have already reworked it but I am still not happy, so I will repost later

3. (approx 7x10")

4.24x30 cm (approx 11x12inch)

11-25-2013, 04:27 AM
Oh my,these are stunning so far although I think JJ should see a chiropodist post-haste...:wink2:
Meggs: I like the very soft pink but the white is outstanding and evokes happy memories.
Maureen: that would grace any gallery. Beautiful and I love the way you have combined the varieties.
Justjean: That is such an effective close-up...very dramatic. Your card is enchanting and such a clever idea to to make the chrysanths appropriate to the season.
Tuscanny: yours is awesome too and this is my favourite type of chrysanth.
Marion: What a fabulous set of paintings. We both thought 'Japan' but you are much nearer the mark! I love the first and second for their flow and minimalist expression and the third and fourth for their sheer enjoyment of colour.
Here's mine...I thought of Satsuma ware and the goldwork. It's acrylic on paper and measures 30 x 20 cms. Sorry, I'm on holiday with very limited internet and no cropping facility. Awful photo.

Great work everyone.

11-25-2013, 09:58 AM
Oh wow, so many lovely flowers this morning and I had only enough time for one painting of the mums. Done in acrylics on canvas board. It wasn't easy trying to match the same color as in the photo.

11-25-2013, 10:34 AM
Everyone's efforts are just tremendous! I'm loving each one from the close crops to the mums in bouquets! :D
Here is a slew of potted ones from a photo taken a few years ago at Home Depot at the beginning of fall. It is on Kilimanjaro 140 lb watercolor paper, size 15x22, cold press/Daniel Smith paints.

11-25-2013, 10:49 AM
I have enjoyed looking at everyone's efforts. All wonderfully done.

11-25-2013, 02:08 PM
Meggs, I like both of them, the pink for the colour and the white for its comp and the way the flower seems to 'dance' around the edges.

Maureen What's to say but wonderful, nice how you've got a limited palette but so much colour and light.

Jean Two good ones. Great idea on that card (I might steal that one:lol:

Christel Nice variation in colour and good 3D effect.

Another nice one with a limited palette. I like your use of complimentary colours. You are so brave to paint such a large bouquet.

Lil Great colour, also brave to tackle this one.

Kay Lovely colour as usual.

Hi all, have just arrived home so here's my effort.
I've been wanting to try out my PanPastel so this one is;

30cm x 21cm - PanPastels on watercolor paper

Sorry the image is a bit fuzzy.
Will be back to comment tomorrow.

11-26-2013, 07:20 AM
Hi all,
So enjoyed viewing everyone's wonderful paintings displayed above. Gorgeous!!!! :D
I was hoping to join you this month. I chose an image and even played with it in photoshop
to work out colors and comp. But that's as far as I got.....;)
So thought I'd post the digi that I worked on, learned how to do layers with this one.
No stylus, used a mouse, but it isn't too bad, and I like the colors,
was looking forward to doing it with acrylics.
Still time, so we'll see what happens...... in the meantime here's the digi :)

11-26-2013, 10:56 AM
Meryl, I knew you would be with us this month!! The pink one is sweet, but the white one is a beauty!! Love the details on the leaves, too!! Way to go, GF!! Sizes?

Maureen, wow and wow!! I love this painting!! Oh, my!! Awesome work!! Absolutely love the vase, too!! You should paint it again, but very large!!

Jean, love your cards!! The up-close is wonderful. . .wish I had thought of that view, too! The second one is so free and airy!!

Christel, this is so detailed and love the colors you have chosen!! That would make a great flower for a ball game Homecoming!!

Marion, what a delight to my eyes!! Love the colors you were ‘playing’ with!! Each one was a joy!! Love the movement of each one!! The last one was my favorite. You had too much fun with this assignment!! :D Keep them coming!!

Margaretta, what a splash of yellows!! You get the prize for the most flowers. . .wait, Kay has a mass of pots, so guess you will have to share with her! :D Love the leaves behind the flowers, too!!

Oh, Lil, I want to pick one or two of these for my house!! Lovely, lovely colors and happy looking flowers!! Love your bg, too! Size?

Kay, I want to buy a pot or two of your Mums!! Love the debris you left on the ground, too!! Love it!! I think I saw the same grouping at our Home Depot, too! :D

Viv, wow!! What a beauty!! Love the up-close view and the little details that you included!! It was worth the wait!! Love the colors, too!!

Shar, great job with the digi!! Love the different levels that you got with the yellow petals!! Waiting for your acrylic one now that you have it ‘fixed’ in PS!! :D

I will not be joining in on the fun this month, but really wanted to. My Dad passed away last week and I have been all over the State of Texas, I think, with the Service and Burial. He was 96 and it was a sweet departure and now he is 'resting' next to Mother, so it is all good with the family.

Hope to see more beauties posted in the next few days!!

Hugs, Peeps!!

Sorry to be late back - we had a power cut yesterday and didn't come back on til near dinner time - fortunately, otherwise we'd have been eating cold in a cold house!

Jean - stupendous macro - you have such beautiful control over the medium!
The greetings card is so sophisticated - brilliant thought!

Christel - amazing what you did with the OPs - lovely control and beautiful light - really well done!

Marion - Prodigious output and talent! Love the way you've used the idea but produced your own creative versions - Lovely, lively dancing twirls in #1 .... nice colour in #2 but they look sad somehow! ... Absolutely love the vibrancy of #3 and 4, the sheer joy of the colours, light and shape .... you really were having ball!:)

Margaretta - I can see the Japanese influence here too - more restrained use of colour but delightful flower heads in a very pleasing comp. The light captured is good too.

Lil - sheer joy in these pinks too - such a difficult colour to get right, but you certainly did that! Lovely light - a pot of these would look great at my front door!:D

Kay - what a glorious array of Mums for sale! I really like the way you played down the individual shapes of the blooms but kept the massed shapes still describing the plants' characteristics. The light on the blooms is gorgeous and those cast shadows so lacy and pretty!

Viv - glad you got to post back home! ...... lovely light and soft blending of the pastel on those petals - dramatic and pretty.

Shar - stupendous digi! Love the vibrant colour of b/g as well as flower! You've done extremely well to paint this with a mouse - you have him well trained! It's a lovely painting and I'm so glad ou ot to join in!

Katherine - been thinking of you and hoping you all coped OK - very stressful and sad time for you.

Thank you all for the comments on mine but THANK YOU all so much for the beautiful flower gifts you've given us!:D

11-26-2013, 01:03 PM
Just having a browse and am really impressed by all the beautiful paintings! Well done peeps!

11-26-2013, 01:25 PM
I am sorry I am in a bit of a rush and will comment on the other paintings tomorrow. I finally decided to go digital again, here's my painting:
I know these are very stylized mums, but I had so much fun doing them!

Maureen - Wow, what a wonderful painting! I know its Acrylic, but it has a look of oils about it! Beautifully rendered!

Jean - Wonderful digis and I love that card! Is the first macro one a digi? It so beautifully done, it looks like a painting?

Christel - Beautiful work with those oil pastels! Love the dramatic light and shadow values! I think we've done the same Chrysie but from different photos of it.

Marion - You've been really busy and painted 4, well done! Love them all especially the light and movement in the first, but my favorite would have to be the last one, fabulous - I love the colors and energy in it!

Margaretta - I see the Japanese influence - beautiful!

Lil - Aha, I had that same photo ref printed off to paint and decided against it - all those heaps and heaps of flowers. You've made a magnificent job of it, much better than I could have, well done!

Kay - Beautiful, soft watercolor flowers! Lots and lots of potplants, I want some!

Sharm - Great digi! Wonderful colors - beautiful!

Katherine - So sorry for the loss of your dad. :grouphug:

Ulla - I love it! The stylised flowers and the colors work so well!

11-26-2013, 03:16 PM
A fantastic array of mums! Its great to see the various media being used for this varied floral bouquet.

Here's my second one. Finished this after I got home.
25cm x 30cm - panpastels on Art Spectrum Suede paper. I found the AS suede paper much better for PanPastels than watercolor paper.

From the RIL TeAnne's photo - thank you TeAnne

Thanks, Peeps!!

Ulla, wow, I love this one!! They look so fresh and happy!!

Okay, Viv, the last one you painted is a standout, too!! I just love it!!  Interesting about the suede paper, too! We have a couple of days left, sling out another one!!

Loved all the entries and look forward to next month's challenge too.

Hey everybody,
Good job on this month's project. This one was definitely a challenge for me to paint with watercolor but i have been so determined lately not to paint with anything else and i really wanted to participate this month after missing last. Work is busy this time of year also... If you will be celebrating the holidays this month, be blessed and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

9x12, watercolor and some digital enhancement

6x12 watercolor

much love,

Viv - meticulously beautiful!:) Looks like a sympathetic surface for pastels.

Chana - WOW! Stupendous - and explosion of glorious colour! (You'd love acrylic inks!!!:D) I actually gasped when I saw the first one - and the second is not bad either! - it's gorgeous - lovely soft backlighting enriching the flower.

Meggs, both of your paintings are wonderful, but I love the second one!
Maureen, I love those amazing vivid colours!
Jean, two beautiful digital paintings! I admire the way you made those petals look so soft in your first piece - makes me want to touch them with my fingers;
Marion, love the style of your paintings, especially that of the first one!
Vivien, wonderful paintings - I especially like the style of your second one!
Christel, I like your shades of red and how you did the background!
Margarette, love the choice of colours!
ArtsyMom: love the contrast between the background and the mums!
Shar: wonderful colour range in your petals!
KreativeK: lovely colour palette!
Chana: gorgeous colours as well!

And thanks everyone for your kind comments on my digital painting!

I had an itch that had to be scratched:D:D This was my first attempt at scratchboard. Once I finished scratching, I used Pan Pastels to tint the board. 11X14 inches. Not sure whether I like scratching but I would definitely try it again for other things.

Justjean - how pretty

marionh - Ikebana is a good idea. All are very appealing
Margaretta - great detail
Artsy - indeed, it is pretty in pink
KreativeK - loose and lovely
Viv - nicely done and with Pans too
Sharrm - gorgeous
ulla - great approach
everything... - very pretty

Well C, your scratching produced a really lovely chrysanth head! Your patience is well rewarded I think - it's excellent!
Didn't think of the pan pastels with the scratchboard - I know a lot of people use the inks to add colour. The pastels give a nice gentle colour touch.
Did you have all the tools or just make do with what you could find?

So glad you joined us - it's ages since you dipped your toe in!

Katherine, thoughts and very best wishes are with you. It is some consolation when final events go smoothly. May all the nicest memories of your Dad remain.
Artsymom: What a plethora of pink perfection!
KreativeK: Your ‘slew’ has slung delight all across the picture. A wonderful collection of colour and not a bad price either!!
Sharrm: So much work in these beautiful chrysanthemums. I love the colours and highlights set off by those electric blues.
Vivien: That is great with the Pan Pastels….another string to your bow. I really like the muted one too with its clever creamy petals, the purple and the glow at the heart!
Ulla: This is exciting. Zing! I love the design, very 3D. The more you look the more it seems to be moving forward and back.
Everythingsheneeds: . What a breathtaking burst of crimson! I also like your mysterious dark red.
Carol: Stupendous!!

Wow, those are all strikingly beautiful. Love all the colors and compositions. Just sorry I didn't have time to join in. This month seemed to disappear with the rest of the year and left me behind, which is happening too much lately.

Been a busy month and I'm sorry I couldn't play along this time. Had to pop in and see what everyone has done. I'm totally in awe of Maureen, Jean and Chana. The rest of you did a marvelous job too mind you. I think maybe this subject might have frustrated me with all those petals so maybe it was the right month to bow out after all. I'm sure I'd still be only half done at this point. LOL

Thank you for all the nice comments! I apologize it has taken me this long but I do work retail and it is that time of year...Katherine, the digital enhancement was on the first one only and it was to darken the darks and lighten the lights. If i ever do add any sort of enhancement, i like to say. Anyhoo, happy holidays everyone!
