I thought it might be useful to have a booklist for books we come across that are of particular interest for finding out about the history of art and favourite artists of the pre-modern age. Before 1850.

I will also post a separate thread for books on the modern and contemporary art eras.

Please conribute.

Rogier van der Weyden: by Stephan Kemperdick. Ullman publishing. 2007. In German but has beautiful colour imagery and paperback is reasonably priced.

Van Eyck to Gossart: by Susan Fraces Jones. National Gallery London. 2011. Beautiful colour plates. Scholarly info on techniques and history of Netherlandish art of the Renaissance.

I would highly recomend "Rembrandt: The Painter at Work" by Ernst Van De Wetering for anyone looking into painting from the 1600's. I have a post about it hear: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1329659

Vasari, Giorgio, 1511-1574 wrote a series of books on art and artists. The intro to the series is "Vasari on Technique" found hear : http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044033599747;view=1up;seq=7;size=150
And the other volumes are "Lives of the Most Eminent Painters Sculptors and Architects, Vol 1-10 and found at: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/9769
All free. I'm always on the lookout for other translated texts and would welcome any hints to point me in the right direction. I'm especially interested in 1550-1700ish art, but any are great. :)
I hope others find them as great to read as I am.
