View Full Version : Roadrunner

My first commission and boy was it hard to begin! I had no idea how frozen up I could get worrying about whether my client would like what I am planning. Took me a couple of weeks to just begin the sketches for it. So.. with school it's hard to paint on a daily basis, but hopefully it'll be done by the end of the week. Here's hoping I uploaded them in the right order!

300 lb. Arches, cold press, 22x30 inches

Wow, oh wow... no coyote to worry about here! :) I love the colour and washy look of your cacti... feathering on the little roadrunner is well defined without being overworked... looking forward to your next steps!

Looking great! I didn't notice at first that it's a full-size sheet.

I love your blog...the oven is amazing!

Wow, that's looking great, Alice!

I really love the way you're doing the feathers. That is one huge bird.

After just waking up from a nap, prior to my double-bag, caffeinated big cup of tea, I'm finding my barrel of oh-so-clever jokes to have some sort of child proof lid or something. I was hoping to come up with something all roadrunnery to say.

Instead I'm just going to blurt 'mmmeeep meep!' and drink my tea.

Char and Jan and Karl, thank you for your kind words. I'm not going to lie, this has not been the thing fun to paint that the other cacti pics were. Stressing, evidently, makes me forget how fun color can be. However, by the end of the day I felt like I was getting in the groove finally. Blah!

In the immortal words of Karl, Mmmmeep meep!

PS, Jan I'm so tickled you like the blog! I have to say, the cover painting on yours is lovely.

One of these cheeky things used to come visit my Dad regularly. It was a mama bird and she would barge right up his driveway into the garage, and clack her beak at him. This was his cue to head inside and pick up several little balls of raw hamburger, kept just for her. She'd eat one then collect the rest in her beak to take back to the little ones somewhere out on the desert. Good times!

I feel you on the stress but it's not coming through, Alice... looking wonderful so far. Pulling up a chair!

WOW...this is coming along just great! No more stressing out, relax and enjoy what you're doing!
Be thankful your first commission wasn't a portrait!!! Now doesn't that make you feel better?

Excellent painting, Alice. Your client is going to love it!

Love the composition with the roadrunner on top of the cactus pad. The little red dot in his eye is a subtle touch that works beautifully.

When we moved to New Mexico a few years ago, one of the first things I saw in the field next to our apartment building was a roadrunner. It was like a "Welcome to the Land of Enchantment" moment. Your painting reminded me of that day. :D

I finally got the time to finish this. It's been a wild week! I seem to be lucky to get a painting a month done this semester. Fortunately my buyer likes the painting, so I can move on to a new project now! I'm tired of this one..LOL

This is a winner for sure... I hope you plan to enter it into a juried exhibition! Beautiful finish!

Only if the buyer will loan it back. Hopefully, the next few are for me!

Thanks, all for the kind words! It's lovely to be part of a group working for the same things as I.

This is lovely Alice...sorry I missed the 'doing'!...it turned out great, and of course they would love it! (Even over here, I can't see the word roadrunner without going 'meep meep'....good old childhood TV!)
