Doing more still life lately. This one is a pan pastel underpainting with various softies on top.
14x21 on sanded watercolor paper.

Outstanding! I love trompe l'eoil and those elements in this painting are great. I purchased 20 pan pastels so far and not a fan but I keep watching YouTube videos to see if I can learn some techniques.
Here's hoping NJ fall is beautiful. (just got Dakota travel box and easel to get ready for my week with Richard McKinley next June - now I need to practice plein air). Pam

Nicely done, Derek! I really like this longer format. That feather is a wonderfully subtle lead into the still life.

Great reflections on the bottles. Aside from the chickadee tear out, my favorite part is the blue green bottle near the center. Overall, a soothing composition. I am tempted to try pastels but keep having visions of pastel dust all over my clothes and up my nose. Sandi

Beautiful one Derek. The trompe l'eoil is fabulous, the glass jars are outstanding, and that feather is just wow!l I love Pan Pastels for underpaintings, I'm working on one now that I underpainted with pans. I'm wondering, do you let your underpainting show through or do you end up covering it all? Just wondering...... I'm trying to let some of it show, though it can be difficult to not go over the whole thing with the sticks. I'm trying to consciously let some areas peek through.....
Beautiful work as always!

I love the autumn feel of it, wonderful!

Wow, this is really nice Derek. I love how the organic elements play off the man made ones. And the torn paper is fabulous. I find myself wandering around the composition there is so much to look at. Wonderful composition beautifully painted.
Thanks so much:
Chris: The whole background is panpastel and for the objects, I block in the forms with pans, then go in with sticks and define. Yes a wee bit of the pan shows thru.

Your work is always a treat to see!

Thank you Derek. I'm working on something that I did the same thing with, I blocked in the entire painting using pans, and now I'm using sticks over that. Some pan pastel is peeking through here and there. I find I rather like this approach. Beautiful stuff here Derek!

You know, im not normally a fan of the still life but WOW. I especially love the trompe l'oeil of the "painting of the drawing" just marvellous.
Justin: I didn't like still life either, til' I started painting them.
Thanks Sue and Shireesh.
