View Full Version : venice fish market

I painted this especially for my upcoming Open Studio event (more info available if you are UK based, just ask me)
I sat in the fish market in Venice, to sketch, some years ago. I loved the atmosphere there, tho I got very wet feet when someone sluiced down near me with a big bucket! And I took photos before I sketched and a few during, to back up the sketch. I thought I would take more after I finished sketching...but suddenly the market closed, the fishsellers rapidly disappeared, and since it was in the days before digital cameras, I just had to hope the photos would be good enough when they were developed. They were not. I have long wanted to do something more with the reference material but hated the photos. The Open Studio looming up, and a big frame sitting empty, finally got me going, after a large number of thumbnails to work out something worthwhile from lousy photos. That'll teach me to get up and move around to take photos. Nobody could ever find this particular corner, it is mostly made up!

This particular corner may be made up, Jackie, but this is still the Rialto fish market in all its glory! I can smell the fish! Love that contrast between the bright red awnings and the cool turquoise of the fish boxes. Looking forward to seeing the original painting at your Open Studio!
Here are two photos I took in Venice a few years ago:

Beautiful painting. Is the open studio a competition? If so, I'm sure it will do well. Going to Venice in two months. Pam

No Pam, Open Studio is an opportunity for artists in a particular area to open their studios to the public...giving THEM an opportunity to buy direct from the artist. It is fun, and lovely for the artist to have some direct feedback from customers.
Dorothea....I love that first picture...would you mind if I tried using it?
I am not sure the light is going to be interesting enough, but if the colour sing, it might work. You always take super pics.

Lovely use of negative space. Those warm rich reds against the soft blues are amazing. Well done.

Hi Jackie, of course, if you think you can make use of it. BTW, I remember sending you a Venice web album last year, did you ever get it?

Did you? I am not sure. I will go back thro your emails to me. Sorry about that....how odd.....I am fairly confident I would have liked the pics and kept them! I know you have sent me a few from Giverney, but have no recollection of Venice.

thanks for sending them again. Your night-time photography is excellent........I think I need lessons!

You need a tripod - and a husband who carries it...:wink2:

It may not be a "real" part of the market, but it certainly is evocative. Gave me wet feet just looking at it!
Sorry I am not near enough to come to your Open Studio! But I hope it was successful.

I went to Jackie's Open Studio on Sunday; we passed a few hours happily chatting and I could admire the Venice Fish Market 'in the flesh'.To cut a long story short; I bought it for my husband who had seen the photo and fallen in love with it. And IRL the colours are even more vibrant than in the photo!

Beautiful work Jackie.

Thanks Pete....and Dorothea for purchasing the painting! I agree about the colours not showing as well in the photo....think perhaps I need to adjust slightly in Photoshop.
I shall be sad to see it go. I will have to go back to Venice and go there again!

You will have to come to Brussels and visit it, Jackie! And I will take good care of it.:)

Hi Jackie, Nice piece. I'm so familiar with your soft light colors in your beach figures that this is a nice change. Such detail!!!
Hurrah for sales!!! Especially in the dusty family! B
