View Full Version : Summer Gold

My sister sent me a few photos from her summer holidays in Normandy - the usual pictures of the famous cliffs at Etretat and a few sunsets. On one of them I discovered the small silhouette of a child trying to catch the sparkle of the sun on the wet sand.

You did a great job in capturing the sparkle of the water :)

This is lovely Dorothea! So vibrant, colourful and made of Summer! Your simplified treatment of the silhouette of the child and the sun soaked sand is most effective!

Looks like you used the color of your board to great advantage, Dorothea! Very nice!

Thank you, Kathryn and Ruthie! Aren't pastels just wonderful? To be able to cover a dark reddish brown with lighter colours up to a few strokes of pure white to show the near blinding intensity of sunlight on wet sand - love it!

Donna, I love to work on those coloured AS boards and papers. They can add a lot to the outcome of a painting.

Sweet! Nice comp and artistry!

I really like your work. This is a great rendition of the child and the sea with only few colors. You are very talented.

Thank you, Dedrian!
Moe, glad you like it! Sometimes a few colours are all one needs; here it's more a play with values!

Nicole, Mary thank you! I cropped about 80% of the photo which left me with a slightly blurred picture which I then used as reference.

Very, very nice :)

I love this. I moved near the ocean a year ago and have yet to sit on the beach and paint. This will inspire me. Pam

Beautiful work Dorothea! I love the limited palette, and the sparkle on the water is wonderful!

Chris, thank you! It was fun playing around with all those red, orange and yellow hues; the child, too is painted in a dark brownish-red. There are just a few touches of pure Schmincke white for the lightest parts to show that blinding brightness of the sunlight wet sand.

Hard to not stare at this beauty! I love it!

Judi, thank you! What a compliment, I appreciate it! It's framed now and going to my Mom who fell in love with it - she's 90 and not well so I'm glad I can bring her a little sunshine with this!
What a lovely silhouette and rich color.

Derek, that silhouette immediately caught my eye, while I was browsing through my sisters's photos. Sometimes you get lucky!
