I am amazed and excited that this painting won the Pastel Guild's "Get Dusty" challenge for July! I still can't quite believe it
It's about 16x12" and was painted from a photo I took while in Cumbria this June.

Congrats! It's a beautiful painting. Love the way you've captured the light.

Congratulations! I can see why your painting won. The water is beautiful. Rocks are inconsistent in a good way, not all lined up or anything. Looks very natural! Love the whole scene.

You are on a roll Ruthie! Beautiful painting, I can feel the 'wetness' of the water. Nice use of greens too! Congratulations!

Thank you all so much for looking and commenting!
Ruthie: It is a lovely painting and you deserved to win. Outstanding.
In Scotland this scene would be a called a "wee burn".
Wow: from an excellent portrait to a fine landscape. Keep it up.

Congratulations! It absolutely deserved the award! Everything works so well - the water and stones, the darker tree on the left framing the painting and contrasting with the warm area of trees in the distance.. Your greens and textures are beautiful!

Guid Laddie. thanks te ye! I may change the name to "A donner by th'burrrn". Sounds good to me!
John and Kathryn, thanks for your confidence!
Lana, Thank you! I worked on the composition when I took the photo and then worked on it some more when I did the painting. I'm glad it seems to work well!

I love this painting Ruth! I like the way you've turned the usual "rule" on its head with cool colours in the foreground and warm colours in the background.
It's nice to hear the word "Beck" again after many years too. Over here they are all "creeks"! Wonderful work.

Thank you Clive! I only knew the cool/warm thing would work because I've done it before. It needs careful assessment of the values I think. I have to say that the photo I took helped me no end in this case!

I stopped by and looked at this again. I spent several minutes exploring all of the little surprises and details. And the light.
Being able to capture someone's attention for a long pleasant moment is the best measure of success that I can think of...
