Started this one with a sketch using hard grey charcoal, no. 2 pencil and some marker trying various line and treatment. I am intuitive so we will see where this piece will take us. The sepia tone was there because of the scanner so I kept it as is.

Stage 2 treatment, I wanted some flowing texture. Taking a photograph of yellowstone algae I started overlaying and trimming it to fit areas of my sketch.

Once I get it in position, I reduce transparency and work with it on a separate layer till I'm happy with it.I'm going to let this sit awhile and come back and work later.

Suggest you delete the "horns" blocking the piece, remove the "eyes" and other facial references and work with the central roundish core. You may want to recolor the orange-brown material--it doesn't seem to fit. Maybe a less aggressive color.

Anthony..Are you having a laugh! Seriously, you might want to read the post before commenting, as its a WIP.:)

P.P..I like seeing the process, of how you build up the colour...will be watching to see your progression with this one.

The final was treated, painted cropped and rotated, I think this is it about 7 hours invested in this one.

Welcome r-Q and well done. You have made a good job of this for only two months in.

At this early stage in your painting life, I would not wish to make any criticism but only to encourage you to keep painting and experimenting as much as you can. You are clearly self-critical (which is a good thing) and can see things which don't look right to you so you are half way there! All you need now is to develop your skills which will come with time and practice. Seeing how other artists paint will help you but you will develop your own style.

So, keep at it! Looking back in a year or two, you will be amazed how far you have come.

Mike
