View Full Version : WDE 13th July Fence (MI same ref)

Hi! It's been a loooong time since I've been on Wetcanvas as I found and started pursuing my true passion of music, but I still find myself drawn (hah!) to my art supplies and dabbling. I hope you don't mind an imposter amongst you :)

I wanted to try some soft pastels, so I dug up my old set from school (Inscribe 32 set) and Daler Rowney pastel paper and had a go. I didn't like the way they smelled, however, and I didn't really finish. Still, This is how far I got:

I decide to tackle it again with my first choice in medium - pen and watercolour. This one was far more successful! It's a bit of a shame I can't get the colours to look how they do in real life because they really stand out. The sky is more violet and in generally has a more bluer tinge. Still, it's the best shot I took. I used Dr PH Martin's Hydrus watercolour and a thin drawing pen. The paper is Arches cut into a 7.5" x 5.5" piece.

Both together probably took about 1.5 hours. Thank you for hosting these photos, I had a hard time choosing!

Love them both! I like the impressionistic appeal of the first and and the attractive colors in the second.

Oh yes, number two is gorgeous, I hope you join in more often. Music and art go together like bread and butter, so you are always welcome here.

I think you took a photograph and made something more interesting. I like both of your interpretations much better. Love the colors in the first one and the softness and texture of the pastel and the watercolor for it's contrasting values and interesting play with the shapes. Your foreground especially a very nice blend of different colors. I like that you didn't go back into the wet wash but you let it do what it wanted to. Yay!

welcome back, and you are no imposter! I like the soft effects of the pastels, but I m really drawn (pun?) to the ink and WC, I love your sky

I like that you used the same ref for 2 different mediums. It shows just how different the results can be. That being said I prefer what you did with the WC and Ink.
