I've been thinking about getting a proxy service for a few months to watch the Watercolour Challenge episodes on 4OD. For those of you who have seen episodes, are they instructional or just entertaining?

Thanks -

try watching one on channel four catch up
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/watercolour-challenge/4od#3119438

they are mostly entertaining- just relaxing viewing, watching people paint a landscape and watching their interpretation immerge although i dont always agree on who the winner is.

Thanks, Kate. Channel 4 blocks viewers that have an ISP address outside of the UK so I can't watch there or on YouTube. The proxy service is 5 pounds per month which isn't too bad. Then I can watch all the BBC programs, too.

Get Hola Unblocker (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/hola) Works for both the Beeb and Channel 4.

I use the BBC iPlayer to catch up with various shows. I just checked out Hola for C4 Watercolour Challenge. You need to register for C4 first and confirm via your e-mail. Registration needs a UK address, but easy enough to fake. Just locate a UK postcode that is in a residential area. 5 minutes jumping through their hoops and I'm watching C4's wc Challenge on my Chromebook.

YMMV

Thanks - I could click on the videos on 4OD but when I hit play they said it was blocked because of my IP address. There wasn't anything about registering but I'll check it out.

I hope you can manage to see the series, it was wonderful, if a little maddening when the wrong person won

Whilst I welcome every opportunity to watch art programmes on TV, this particular series is not one that I would pay to watch.Jan, it's strange that you can't get them on Youtube as normally when there is a blocking on non UK ISP addresses that rules me out being in Ireland but not for these on Youtube

I could register for Channel 4 with my Google account and then selected 4OD on the top line menu.

No joy Doug,I installed Google and tried it on that but something is blocking it and I don't know enough about computers to figure it.When you say "selected 4OD on the top line menu" I am presuming that this means just search for it on the top bar?

Yes 4OD is an option on the top menu bar Larry.

Thanks Doug.I will investigate further as to what is blocking me from registering.Could be nothing more than the ISP address issue and the unblocker that Claude talks of doesn't seem to get around it

The Hola Unblocker works in chrome a treat. But you can only have one browser window ( of any browser type ) open on the computer when you want to use it, or the VPN it sets up, gets confused. And watch the wee flaming face symbol at the top right, it should change to a British flag, then it should work.

I hope it works, it's rather fun, and a lot cheaper than the VPN's I've used before, as it's free.

All the best, Leslie

Tried that Leslie and was hopeful but once again as soon as I go to 4OD, I need to register and that is where it seems to go pear shaped???????? Vereee strange.

I went to the second Watercolour Challenge exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Out of the 120 or so `winners' about 15 - 20 were any good. I was amazed to see that one of the regional winners was a painting where the water in a harbour actually went uphill! Talking to someone who took part it appears it was a bit of a nightmare as they were frequently abruptly forced to stop painting and some were reduced to tears.

It works for me here in France, you have to click the greyed out sites on the Hola page to make them accesible.

I found this site and am going to try it. They give you the DNS numbers for you to go through their server. It's free and they make no guarantees about down time but it seems to work. You would have to reboot your computer to access their server and then again to switch back to your regular DNS server.

I don't know what to advise. For me, it was click, click, click. Wait for confirmation e-mail. Click and "Bob's your uncle" as some British say ;-)

...and I for one, wasn't particularly impressed with the results of this latest 'Challenge' day one. For the record, I'm not a fan of watching videos on a computer screen but having viewed the entire episode I cannot understand why someone didn't turn 180 and paint the old castle ruins.

Well I finally ended up using a very simple VPN program called TunnelBear (https://www.tunnelbear.com/). Once it's installed, you open the program, click the button to on, choose the UK, and then open a browser and go to the website. I decided to get the unlimited data plan for $5 a month. You can download up to 500 MB free, but that won't get you through much video.

Larry, here is the registration page link:
Channel 4 OD Registration (https://4id.channel4.com/registration?subContext=PlayerRegister&redirectUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.channel4.com%2Fprogrammes%2Fwatercolour-challenge%2F4od%233119438)

I just watched the first episode and it was well worth persevering :-) I really enjoyed the comments on the history of the area and the scenery was lovely.
