View Full Version : WDE June 21-Like Nobody Is Watching

Thanks for hosting and all the great pics to choose from, Joel!

I chose the dancer. She reminded me of the poem "Dance Like There's Nobody Watching"..Auth. unknown. I removed the band and the horses so it was more easily painted in the allotted time. This was done entirely with a painting knife. I like the energetic/vibrating surface and the unresolved areas that resulted.

This is oil on a 7x5 canvas panel.

C&C welcome. Thanks for taking a peek. :)

Done at 2 hrs.

Brilliant work, aside from the usual superb technique, I am very taken by the perfect tilt of her shoulders that you captured.... you can imagine her body's next movement. Bravo !

Wonderful painting!!

In regard to the line "dance like there's nobody watching", the internet claims several people have this incorporated into poems, songs, or speeches. One article, yes it's a wikipedia article, credits William Watson Purkey.

Purkey closed his speeches with the following poem, and it has made it into the public domain.

"You've gotta' dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.
(And speak from the heart to be heard.)”
—William W. Purkey

Although Purkey is the source of this quotation, it has been attributed to many others.

Lines from it were included in the song "Come From the Heart" written by Susannah Clark and Richard Leigh in 1987. A modification of the quote is also found in the song "Get Fighted" by Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, appearing on the album Watch Out! released in 2004. from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Watson_Purkey)

Deano. This is really wonderful. Yes, she is dancing like nobody or everybody is watching.

I missed this one first time round - sorry. But this is one exciting painting Dean. Those red hot colours against the cool in her dress are just wonderful.
