Chicago buildings and river
Sakura Koi watercolor on Stillman & Birn Beta journal heavy WC paper
Photo reference by savatage

Tried something a little different this time, a looser interpretation of big blocky architecture than I've ever done. Just transparent watercolor.

WOW, I just love the freshness of this painting.
What size Robert?

Wow, thank you! Stacey, the page is 7" x 10" so it's rather small.

Savatage: :D Yep. I have been down there and seen those so many times. I had ideas like trying to change the season, give it that typical iron grey sky and lots of dirty snow around from the winters I remember. In the end decided to just paint as-is, those nice days are well worth painting.

Wow, Wendy, thank you! I used to be so notoriously bad at composition, could not manage it or understand it, the Johannes classes and hanging at WC made the difference.

Purr thanks, Lissa and Kate and Bunny and J. I wanted to do this one justice and even though I was scared this might be my worst-ever cityscape around the middle of it (sky washed in, river done, big gap in between) I had to try. This one's much more watercolor-looking than some of my past watercolors, loosening up like that was deliberate.

I waited 3 hours for that sky to dry and it was worth it!

Love how you've allowed the brushes and paint to work for you, Robert! A very well done painting!!

Purr, thank you! Deano, I've been playing with watercolors all my life but until the past couple of years rarely dared to let that happen, just let the paint flow where it's going to and let it do the work instead of trying to control it. I'm having a lot more fun with it now!
