Even though I have about 6 unfinished paintings I had to start this vase of tulips. Something about it spoke to me. It is from a photograph by Margaret Wiles of pmp. I was looking for images for my class as they wanted to do flowers. Here is the beginning of the painting, about 16 x 20 on dark blue colorfix with Senns, Caran D'ache and Holbeins.
C& C always welcome.

The lighting on this is going to be brilliant!

I'm wondering about the yellow flower in the back-right. Is that a petal sticking much further out than the others, or the center part of another flower? It's a little distracting.

I'm loving the transparency of that vase. Cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors. I've always loved those antique glasses and vases in that color.

Thanks, Tom. It is part of that flower which is only roughed in at the moment. Those back flowers will change as I move along.

Loving the colors and vibrancy. Will be watching as this progresses.

Will be watching this, Pat. You don't post enough of your own work, in my opinion, and everybody misses out for it.

Fabulous! Pulling up a chair to watch the action! The blues and oranges make this painting sing!

Thanks, Tom. I'll try to do better. Always seem to get bogged down with other things and then don't finish. I'll have another update today.

I love it when you do WIPs Pat:clap:

This is going to be a beautiful painting! Love the delicate petals already showing and your background - great colors and values ranges coming.

Can't wait to for the next image.

As promised, here is an update to the tulips. I hope to finish this next week and then I can move on to some other unfinished work.
C&C always welcome.

I'm learning by looking at your work in progress. Those flowers look great. The reflections on the can, and the shadows look really good too. I'm looking forward to your finished painting.

Wow, Pat, strong lighting.

I'd put that on my wall, as is.

Beautiful work on the table top - the lighting and shadows are wonderful. Looking forward to the final painting!

It's easy to see why you couldn't resist this image, Pat. Your painting is looking really good and I also am eager to see it's completion.

No update today, but definitely tomorrow. I didn't think there was enough of a difference between the entries.

Thanks for the WIP Pat! Loving it!

Wonderful light in this already. I love it. PLease do keep posting more! I can see why you had to paint this. It's cool how I'm looking right down the throat of the red tulip, don't always see that view of them. I liked the petal sticking up on the yellow one in the back right, it looked right to me.

You knew exactly where you were going with this from the beginning, that's so awesome. Your WiPs give me an itch to paint.

It is going to be beautiful!

Love those nice clean juicy strokes of colour, Pat, and yet the petals are starting to take such wonderful delicate shape. I'm going to love this one!

This is really beautiful. Adore the vibrant colours, also love the contrasting blue background and vase. Can't wait to see progress and the finished painting.

Shadows (or should I say "light spots"?) on a table looking very attractive to me. Even more then flowers. Beautiful, Pat!

Oh my Pat, the wood table with light, shadows and vase reflections is fantastic. This is coming along very nicely! Can't wait for the finished piece.

Love the light so far...

Wow! Nice work on the shadows. And the flowers are so bold and saturated. Looking forward to the final product.

Okay, I think this is finished now except for a few tweakings. I had fun doing it and am not sure where it is going now.
C&C always welcome.
I will have to finish off the right side or crop, not sure yet.

My opinion is that it should be cropped. A lot of space on that right side. On the other hand, when you cover up that space with your hand the painting seems to lean to the right, as silly as that sounds and then it feels unbalance. The jar, the flowers and the flooring are all pointing downward and to the right. Otherwise you should be proud of this one, Pat, it's beautiful!

Yeah, I kind of noticed that myself. It may be the way I took the photo, but I can fix it when I mat it. Thanks.

It's great Pat! The light and shadows are brilliant - subtle colors for both especially on the table (which I just love - the grains and slats, again subtle colors for white). The right-side doesn't bother me at all - kinds of adds a little balance since you have dark sides to the left, places the spot light on the flowers/table.

I like your flowers a lot - they are light and bright, adds a certain playfulness to the scene.

The leaning is slight and doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks, Mary....appreciate the comments.

Pat, I love this painting in primary colors. The flowers are beautiful and the patterns of light and shadow on the table are wonderful. Beautiful painting.

Love it Pat! I wouldn't change a thing (I wouldn't crop it).

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'll look at it again tomorrow when I go to the studio.

Beautiful and cheerful painting. Love the lighting. . . I like it formatted as it is now with the flower vase off center. If cropped, the vase of flowers would be more centered and maybe not as interesting a composition? I like the extra blue area that it gives to the painting which sorta maybe brings out the warms even more. Very lovely!

It is just beautiful , and I like the light. Don't change , hang it on the wall.

Thanks everyone for all your comments. I think I am going to leave it alone and I did extend the light blue on the right side.

06-24-2013, 03:09 PM
If you crop it, you will lose the nice dark blue shadow on the right hand side. I like it the way it is. Just my two cents.
