View Full Version : Kay's African Violets WIP

Kaypainter posted a lovely photo of her African Violets in the Daily Wash one day and gave us permission to use it if we liked. I took her up on the offer and decided to do it as a WIP here.
Paper: Arches 140 lb rough (I think )
Size: 5.25" x 7.25"
Reference photo and Drawing (traced first, then drawn over) — letter "L" penciled on green leaves.
First washes, starting with the background spaces and leaves. Colors used so far are DS Moonglow, Green Gold, Perylene Green, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna.
These will probably all be adjusted later, but will start on the flowers next.
Looks like it will be an interesting one to do Sylvia. I look forward to seeing it develop.

I worked on it a bit more this morning putting in shadows on the flower petals and deepening the background tones and adding more color on the leaves and in spots I missed between flowers in the cluster.
Colors used in background and shadows: DS Moonglow + Quin Magenta, Perylene Green, and whatever looked like it would work. In the centers of the flowers I put Naples Yellow by Holbein and DS Prussian Green.
I decided to tone down the bits of vase that show in the lower left corner and on top. Originally they were DS raw sienna, but I put a glaze of DS Burnt Sienna on top, then another glaze of DS Burnt Umber to push them back even more.

Looking really nice, Sylvia, I like your use of the pot, it ties it all together. This is definitely a tempting image to use.

This is looking lovely, Sylvia. Your first shadow washes are already giving the blossoms a three-dimensional structure.

This is going to be lovely Sylvia. I love this composition and the delicate flower of the African Violet. The leaves are looking velvety just like they should be.

Thanks Anne, Lynn, Anne, John, Lil, and Darla for your kind words and encouragement. Will do a bit more painting this morning. First I have to work out which colors I will use for the flowers. They aren't all the same tone because of the light. :D

Oh how pretty this composition is, Sylvia! Your drawing is excellent. I have a tube of Moonglow but haven't cracked it open yet! I'm looking forward to your next steps!

Started putting some color on the top most flowers yesterday. Added another glaze this morning when I thought it looked too pale.
Paints used: DS carbazole violet, Quinacradone Magenta, Quin Pink; MaimeriBlu Garnet Lake.
Char, One of the members of my Monday WC class introduced us to Moonglow because her paintings were so striking with it. It is a wonderful dark that granulates and separates into its blue and red components in interesting ways. :D

Looking good Sylvia.

Worked on this some more in my Monday afternoon art class. Unfortunately, the florescent lighting in the room plays havoc with colors, so I'll need to make some adjustments here where I have natural north lighting to paint by. But wanted to show you the progress before starting on it again. :D
Thanks Jan and Doug. :D

Thanks for the encouraging words Lynn, Darla, Robert, Kay, and Char. :D
Here it is with all the flowers painted. Now to adjust the values, etc.
Couldn't get the colors to look accurate for some reason until I took a photo using the flash. Here is the finished painting, a bit overworked, I'm afraid. :(
Thanks for watching me work on Kay's beautiful african violets photo.

Nice work Sylvia, I prefer the lighter version on my screen.
