it's been a long time since I posted any work due to an artistic dry spell but I am almost done this and thought I would share it with you. I need to define the mane and tone it down a little in the forelock as its too red and add some more to the muzzle. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Flat out gorgeous, mysterious and elusive

I love it just the way it is. In spite of the calm, sleepy look in the horse's eye, that splash of red in the forelock gives the impression of deep smoldering fire just waiting to erupt. Lovely!

Wonderful, smouldering look to this horse! I would leave the red in also, don't do a thing to it as it's great as it is! I've seen that look on a horse just before he erupts and you've caught it beautifully!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I will be taking the advice about the red and although I have to add more individual hairs I will leave some showing. I hope to finish it before the weekend and I will post the results when I do.

I did some more work to it this weekend and defined the mane although its not showing up very well on this photo. Then my black paint went all clumpy so I had to pick up a new brand today and I hope it works well. Comments and critiques are welcome! Don't be shy!

Thanks everyone. I think I am at the nit picking phase of it so I will look at it for another day and then make some final tweaks. I should have an update in the next day or two.

I see a very beautiful painting and a very beautiful horse... maybe his eye ..is it a bit too small ? I haven't seen your reference photo, but this is my honest and constructive comment that you can freely ignore.

I don't know much about horse breeds but I think what's making the eye look too small is the wisp of the mane across it. I should probably either remove it or make it brighter. I know though when the varnish is applied it will be more evident although it doesn't show well in the photograph.
