This Project REPLACES that entirely successful Project started by Fun2Cook.
NOTE LIMITED participants, and time for sign up. Sign up for the Project and then PM me your image--the image you submit is the image people will paint of you.

Image limited to ONE per participant and it will not be changed. Goal is to have the same image painted by many. PAINT as many of our friends as you wish, sharpen up your creative juices and TRY different styles, how about an ABSTRACT?

EXCHANGE w/each other if you like, but NOT mandatory to the Project.

Thanks, Rod.

Click here (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=526) to sign up.

Hi Fookie.

I signed up and sent pic. Hope to get it together to put in an entry this time.

Should be good. Lots of neat portraits painted the last one that Fun2cook did.

Lets get this going folks.

Fookie, good on you for starting up this project

This will be a wonderful project, looking forward to seeing everyone's portraits.

Just one little note: this project does NOT replace the other one ... the other one is still open for participants to finish or even begin work on portraits there. (I know I still have a lot of portraits I want to finish there and heaven only knows I need the practice!)

Ok.. I'm trying to get up my nerve to join in on the fun of this one so can I ask a few questions as I'm struggling a bit with the instructions.. (sorry.. I'm slow at some things..lol)

First, does the picture of me have to be current? I really don't like my apearance right now but have some from a few years back that I liked alot.

Where do I find the pics of those already joined as I looked and couldn't find them in the image library?

I think that's everything, but I'll might think of something else later.. thanks :)

Thanks for clarification, Fun2Cook.

Thanks for sending me your references Alex and Johnnie, they are loaded into the Project--these 2 are ready for your painting pleasure, folks, and very good images, too.

Felicia--'nerve' is not a requirement of this project--just YOUR choice of image of YOU, paper, paint and a splash of water.

Send me your image in a pm and I will enter it into the Project for all to paint. This is my first Project and I've messed up a bit but both Rod and Mal helped me get it on the ground.

Felicia, if you go to Fooks first post, announcing this project you'll see a blue 'click here'. This will take you to the project and show you the images already posted. Once you get to the site, bookmark (save in your fav's) and it will be at your fingertips next time :)

OOOHHHH.. those were added since I last looked.. thanks bunches Annetta... and.. upload my picture in the project itself.. hehe.. guess I should have waited a little longer.. I'll go join now! (and.. go look up a photo I like enough of myself.. gosh I hate pictures of me..lol) (well... with the exception of my tiny head... liked me when I was little...hehe

Hi Fookie

Don't know if you going to do this or forgot/missed it. Are you going to put names beside pictures of entree's photos. Myself I don't know who they all are. Might want to name them before the list gets too long. Might be easier to remember. ;)

Still working on yours. Are you entering this one!!

BIZZYLIZZY: Betty, You’ve managed quite well at this painting of our Johnnie. I don’t see a problem in tracing your image—I do my drawing on onionskin and trace it to watercolor paper—same difference, in my book. For another effect w/glasses, try to ‘see’ the shading of the facial structure around them, so in effect they are outlined. Good texture on the straw hat.

BIZZYLIZZY: Betty--this of Alex, is quite different--almost have an abstractual feeling going on. I think if you added some washes of say, Sap Green to the background around the head it might give more depth.

BIZZYLIZZY: Betty—Another good one of Johnnie—I like how you added a decorative neckscarf—nice touch--personalization is a Good Thing. Try a bit of splatter on his beard for a bit more texture. Thanks for all your hard work, Betty, you’re doing great!

NOTE: When you’re done with a painting, please post it in the "Final [Gallery]" section, some people don’t even look in Studio [Progress], so they will miss your work.

There are a few more images in the project to paint now, but still many outstanding—what they HAY? Where’s the references?

This is very interesting. It reminds me of a bust or a sculpture because it has a sort of carved feel, to me. You could also try putting a little varigated wash around his temples to make his head appear a little rounder.

Thanks the the help. I am now posting or trying to post the two final pictures- Johnnie and Alex. Not sure why it won't work today. Said 5 pics to be loaded but I was only loading one.
Maybe the system is glogged at this time. Will try again later

Also, two of the pictures that were originallyput up by Fookie have disappeared from my screen. The two - girl with hat and the lady with the short grey hair won't print or load for me. Tried everything but no luck there.
Any hints on that?

I like to print out and work at my kitchen table. Not sure how I will do from the compuer screen but you never know- a new challenge.

Hey folks! I'm missing MA's and DJ's pictures on the project page too, but I think I know what may be why-

I run on PC instead of mac, and EVERY time I would go to that page and it tried to load DJ's picture it would lock out my ability to load any more graphics on ANY page. I got word today from Rod about a format problem with some of the pictures that they were going to fix, so that's probably where they are. He'll probably have them up soon though!

Trust me, it was a stressful day with my computer on that as I was so excited to try and give those faces a shot! (I'd have to logg off, get off the net and totally reboot my computer to get anything to load at all)

Hope that this helps,
Felica

Glad it was not just me. I can get them at times then they disappear again. I did manage to load or print all the images so far, but it took me foreeeeever to do. Back and forth. I live up to my quote of Where There's a will, there's a way!! LOL

Happy it will all be looked after by the experts.

Well, look at you--you're tearing up these references! Yes, the face is a bit round, but that you're understanding the value of shadow placement is a true reward. I like the pink you have used on the left side of MARY ANN'S face, it looks like a good color for the overall skin tones. Wonderful job on the hair, btw. Very good on the hat, too, I'm struggling w/one similar and am going to take a few clues froyou as to 'how-to'. Seems like the pink of her sweater should extend a bit to the right side.

MA, the Projects THING is ticked off because YOU are not running this Project, and I mean this sincerely.

THING is biting me arse [Pat reference, Uschi].

Johnnie you are correct, it is the Photoshop bugger. All images are named .jpg, but WC! sees some as Photoshop--don't know, Rod still helping me sort this out.

I've loaded Gail a jillion times and her wonderful reference still won't load--I give you a tip, though--Gail's image is a FIGURE--excellent practice here, folks.

Moments ago, MA was back in, as was DJ. The reference is named w/the name of the person: On MAC I automatically see the image name, on PC you have to click something and hold something else---a Bill Gates invention, doncha' know.

Snag what you can and paint it, we'll get though this.

Above all: PERSERVERE AND PRESS ON

So Alex, you have my apologies ... I will try to make it look more like you :)

some photos are thumbnails and I personally cannot successfully enlarge them, because they take on very fuzzy, digitized look...

Another little hint is to roll your mouse pointer over the picture and in the lower left hand corner of the screen an address location of the picture shows up. At the end of this address is the actual name of the picture. For instance, mine says ".......=Portrait2-Felica2.jpg". Hope that helps.

Hello again

I'm sorry if I am getting all the names mixed up, so forgive me if I post to the wrong person. I am new here and so I am tagging things "girl with hat' . lady with pearls etc.
Thanks for the praise on MaryAnn's picture and hat. I agree Fookie that the orange sweater should extend around to the other side of the neckline. I may try to fix that.
About the straw hat. I have trouble explaining how I get to a given point or what colours I used. I know I stippled it with a
fan type of brush to get the ridges.
I am not very technical yet about brushes or colours. I just start and see what I need to mix to get the effect. I would make a terrible instructor.
OK off to paint DJ. I have her started. I was not easy as the first picture was not great, but now I have a better picture on screen, thanks to the computer whizz kids.

MA, very interesting preliminary of ALEX. I love what is happejning in the hair, adding nice height w/the highlights. Interesting use of blue under the nose, as generally that area is blood-filled [red]--I like the blue because it served to bring the area forward, rather than use of side shadows to accomplish the same effect--I'll have to try that! As for eyes: think of the 'round' bone/muscle structure surrounding the eyeball and paint it. If you soften the 'cat eye' effect I think you have it, and good job on the ear. :D

Hi all

Well this is my first attempt at a portrait. Fookie is the subject.
She has been so very kind to me, Uschi too, and I had promised Fookie that if and when I ever did a portrait she would be the first subject I would attempt. Notice the major word here "Attempt"
I dont know whether to continue or just start over. That little black mark on the right to the side of mouth looks like beauty mark but it isnt. Its a hole in the paper from my frantic scrubbing trying to lift the color off from an error. Im still trying to learn staining from nonstaining and not sure of all of them yet. There is one I am now sure of. lol.

So I am not sure to continue or start another one.
Tips, suggestions, any help of any kind welcome.

Like I said tho it isnt finished yet.
Tnx
Johnnie

Johnnie, I know what you're going through. Working so hard you put a hole in the paper. That shows heart. I think Fookie will be tickled by this effort and luckily she is running this project because we will all get advice from her that we wouldn't be able to get anywhere else.

fwiw - I'd continue on this one. I think you've caught the sparkle that is Fookie. Look at those hungarian eyes :) ... (although I think they're green ... but my advice should be taken with a grain of salt on such matters). There is a line around her face, if that line was created with a non-staining watercolour, the good news is that you can lift it or soften it a bit. The shape of her face and proportions are great for a first portrait! I'm amazed when I look at her chin (always a problem area for me) and really applaud your efforts!!!

Hi Dizzy Lizzy. Mama's Name is Elizabeth but she uses Betty. She just hate Lizzy. lol

Different idea on that painting. What would you call that. Abstract, Impressionism. I dont know all these different terms thats why I ask.

Pretty cool rendition tho. Neato!!

RE my entry/portrait of Sue Galos...

Sue!! Thank God you're still speaking to me! LOL... yes, I notice now that the space btwn lips and nose is too deep... thanks for pointing that out!!
Actually, in your photo, your face is tilted, so your eyes are not exactly lined up, and that was what I was trying to duplicate... however, now that you've mentioned it, took closer look, and yes, I have them too MUCH out of line.... I think they're also too close together, but maybe not.... hmmm

MA: Thank you!! I appreciate the encouragement!!

Johnnie: LOL, ice cream and Miracle Whip?? ewwwww.... Thanks for looking in, and your encouraging comments....

Jijo: you have a great face! It sure looked like it would be pretty easy to paint.... however.... well, judge for yourself....

Holly, you have done very well w/this painting of SUE GALOS. Even to showing her blue fingernails and lively b/g of her painting. Hair is wonderful!! most impressed w/that. All I see is a bit more practice on bone structure shadows--feel the ridges of your cheekbones, for example, the shading goes beneath it.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/526/completed/19984/tn_Jijo_WC_portrait_project.jpg

Oh, oh, oh! Holly had FUN--what's better than that! This is the purpose of the Project!! Think you're a bit heavy w/ALEX’S eyebrows and think 'orbs' for the eyes--even when you can't see them clearly, the muscle/bone structure is still there --this area is never flat.

Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/image_viewer.php?entry_id=27093

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/526/completed/21575/tn_Fookie02fin.jpg

LOL, Johnnie, Fookie isn't in this Portrait, II Project--this one belongs in first Project. i commented on this piece in the thread: you did a great job--just more practice on muscle/bone structure--we see the photo as flat [which it is], but need to think it as shadows--feel your own face--where the bones are highest is the lights, and undernearth will be the shadows. You find the midtones inbetween. Think of the area under the nose to the end of the chin as a 'cylinder', and shade accordingly. Glad you joined this Project, and thanks for picking me first--I'm special. :D

Well, Sue! GoshDern, this work of CHOCKHOLLY is wonderfully done. I'm looking and looking trying to pick on something. :D I take exception to the slam on purple faces, though, since my people have it, and green and blue, too--expressionism, is what I call it. I really like how you have miniminzed her hand--it's actually a pivotal point in the composition and you have given it just the right amout of delineation to lower its effect--good job. Great hair and eyes. Holly Crabapple is QUITE the character painting!!!

Well, I stayed up late trying to salvage this one as it is NOT how I wanted this to look. I don't know what happened to my paper, but it could be because I stretched it once, took it off the board, stored it for about 8 months and now tried to use it on this. Whatever the cause, it was aweful!! No matter what I did everything would bleed. And lifting????? NOTHING would lift. So, I just did the best I could to salvage it, although I ALMOST didn't upload it. But, I AM going to do another of you Mary Ann, just like I said I would. But, this time I'm testing the paper first!!!

(It was Arches 140 lb so should have been good...don't you think?)

Only nit is right eye (viewer's left)... will have to look at ref photo again, maybe the glasses lens wasn't as shadowed as the left eye (viewer's right)...

Actually I was messing around with it for so longI didn't end up getting enough shadow on the left eye - I used masking fluid on the eyes - a mistake since I am very sloppy in application - so left eye had huge wierd whites that I had to try and correct - thus it kept getting darker.....

Sue- Nope... wasn't kidding.. but.. you're really sweet to thing so. (besides.. you haven't seen it really close up..hehe) colors? I used some of the mixes that someone sent me a link for the other day. I'll look them up for you in a bit. Most of it included burnt sienna in some way. But, more on the pink side. (loved her pink cheeks. :)

And, Sue, your version of Holly is awesome! That purple works gal! I think it fits the mood of the pose! Yes, your wonderful drawing skills really show up there!

Holly- you're such a dear.. thank you. I do have a tendancy to apologize way too much, but I guess I like to please myself with something I do and this one just didn't like other stuff I've done lately!

Betty, you did well with this work of DJ. The reference was difficult indeed. The advice I can give you is to keep practicing--that's the goal of this project--to better your skill. LOOK for bone structure, in particular--to see mid-light-and dark values. "Feel" your own bone structure.

Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/image_viewer.php?entry_id=27135http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/526/completed/7665/tn_16sep03SueGalos.jpg
Alex, LOL, ALL women deserve a thinner face. LOL. Now, this work of SUE is very interesting to me! Yes, it's not a portrait in the sense of real life portrait, but that is not the goal. The goal is to produce a good piece of work by practice. I am quite impressed with the liveliness of your palette. The piece has an abstract quality and if you developed it a bit further, it would be.

I think you have done a good job, considering the picture is very dark. I'm working on this one too, tried to lighten it in PS to see the eyes clearer.

The expression is right on. I do underpaintings too. Takes lots of thin layers, just when you think the purple will never go away, the next layer of color makes it perfect. Lips are great. Glasses look good too.

Hi Patti

Thanks for the comments. yes I have a lot to learn for sure. I'll keep on plugging away at it. My dream is to do portraits of my grandkids before I leave this world and I figure I might as well learn about shadow/shading/mixing of color etc while doing portraits instead of landscapes. Otherwise I would have to start almost all over again. I have had lots of help from great folks on WC to whom I am very thankful.

Tnx again

Hi ALex]

Well not to seem argumentative but the part of Canada I live in is always Sunny. I live in the East End Of Beautiful Downtown Hamilton Ontario. And it dont get any sunnier than that. Had not much rain this year. And when the sun dont shine here we turn on a ligh.

Pic coming good. The red maybe coming from too much red wine huh. We have lots of wine in Canada as well as Sun too. Not as HOT as where you are from but still is sunny most of time. Sunny when the snow flies too. And we do get a lot of that.

Emily makes her portraits in purple undertones--you will see some beautiful works, girl. Then, be very happy you have the knowledge to use the the puple undertones.

Regarding my photo to this project: In the last project, many people painted me. I wanted others to have the opportunity to paint and be painted; hence, I've chosen to facilitate. Also, because my house on the market is taking so much time, I'm not able to get enough paint time--too many distractions and leaving the house for long periods. Now....paint!!!

Well You have done a great job. Like I said earlier. Mama was sitting here watching all the portraits go by and seen the ones of me done. She had commented that your closest to getting my eyes right. Had to tell her tho I was squinting in the pic due to light in Uschi's place when Uschi took the photo.

Looks good. I dont own a pure red shirt tho. I did at one time but all the kids wherever I went started calling me Santa. Ok for a while but got rid of the red shirt and Santa was gone. hahah !!

Hi

A few people have mentioned about eyes in my paintings like mascara or makeup. On Fookie's I did do that.

But on Alex's painting is was trying to get the shadow in his eye. Actually there is hardly any eye there if you look at reference and was trying to have at least some sort of eye in the portait.

How do I do a shadowing.without it looking like makeup. Take a look at his ref. at the SIZE of My portait. At full size on mine doesnt look so much like makeup.

Also on his eye ReF PHote there is a litter line between eye and eyebrow. I putthat in two. BUt the chicks out there look at it as makeup.

How do I get that across without it looking like makeup??

THanks

Johnnie

Hi Felica........I finally got it right!! Sorry about the spelling. I got the prenunciation right but too many ii's

I'm so glad you liked the picture. I really enjoyed doing it.
Some go better than others.
I did read your comment about the green/brown flecks so I am not psychic after all. I agree it is good to mention eye colour as some are not easy to see by the photos.

I did send a photo but it is not 'up' yet. I imagine it will show
up eventually, if not I can resend.

Betty, good work on FELICIA. Watch your value changes at the hairline, they should not be abrupt because it will look like the hair is pasted on. Also, a bit less 'point' on the eyes--doing very well w/bone structure and shadings. Lovely smith and lips, you'll see a bit more shading by looking carefully at the reference--in general, think of the area from nose to chin as a cylinder, and shade accordingly--darker values at the ends and lighter in the middle. Great job with the jewlery--adaptation is a good thing, at least I hope it is since I do it in every work.

Hey, Alex, if MARY ANN wasn't in the sun before she certainly is now--seems like you're getting heavy w/your reds--just as I do. Good job on the lips, just a suggestion is excellent, and the proper way to do it, imo. As for eyes--the glint in the right facing eye is looking straight at us, and is distracting. Rule on eye glint is: if the left facing glint is at the inner corner, the right facing glint will be aat the outer corner. Good on the nose values. Wonderful hair, hat and b/g. Your've feeling more confident and it shows--developing a style you are.

Johnnie, nice hair! Made ALEX look like auntiefook w/the spikey hair. I like it. Watch the dark lines outlining the eyes--Tammy Faye Baker ain't in this project yet. High points in the eye are the top edge on the left and top edge of the right. Under the eye is all muscle structure--no lines. I like the orange-look to the b/g.

ArticRose, this of SUE is great! Looks like a fashion illustration from the 1960s. Were it me, I would work at developing this style further.

ArticRose, on this of JOHNNIE, I think you would be overworking it, too, if you did further. Although, you could add a bit of dark splatter to the beard for some texture. And either a light blue wash to the bottom of the teeth, or a hit of brighter red on the lip next to the teeth --one or both of these suggestions would be with an eye to making the teeth recede, rather than protrude. BUT, very good job, particularly on the face, the eyes and the glasses—well, I guess that’s good job on everything.

Okay, I really SHOULD be hanging my head in shame and slinking out the door on this one!!!!
Gail, please don't hold this against me....
I was not going to post this, and considered starting all over, but time constraints prevailed.... also, I find it extremely difficult to 'redo' any paintings, esp if I've had mucho trouble first time around....
This portrait at one time looked totally different and, if I do say so myself, fairly decent.... then I put a blue wash in your shirt, Gail, w/out letting some facial work completely dry.... that was when you ended up with the finest looking grey goatee I have ever seen... LOL.... well, scrubbed, washed, scrubbed, even sanded with an emery board.... had to change entire shape of chin... then started messing with other parts, thinking if I 'sharpened' those areas, would detract from this distorted chin and resulting facial 'shape'..... your mouth just shaped itself into that chewed up paper I ended up with during my scrubbing.... 's terrible!!!
Well, enough said..... I posted because if I didn't, I was afraid I would fail to post anymore that I might do and be not 'quite pleased with' (to say the least)... you know the old saying, 'first time's always the hardest'... hee heeeee...

Hi

Here is the start of DavidBr portrait. Just drawn in and shadowed out a bit.
Any help, tips etc would be great.

Johnnie

DavidBR

Thanks for the comments Johnnie:

This was my first experince painting hair - so what I did was use the same approach that I use for detailed wood grain, as follows:

1. Wash the subject with the lightes highlight colour you want.
2. When dry, build up wash patches of other colours, going light to dark undtil you have most of the colour values you want.
3. Go over the entire area using the "dry brush" technique to build up the fine lines and tones of the hair, preserving the light areas as highlights.

That's about it - probably helps to see someone do it, but if you want more information just PM me.

All the best.

David

DavidBR

Felica: On studying your eyes I realized they had the same tones as mine - so wasn't that difficult. Glad you like the painting.

Johnnie: Your drawing looks really great. I put up a photo wearing a hat for those that are hair-challenged, so no excuse. The only comment I'll make so far is scrap the Strathmore paper and use the best - it amazes me the difference - kinda like playing hockey with a broken stick. I've tried Saunders-Waterford CP lately and am hugely impressed - a little less money than Arches.

You beat me to her lol .I have had her all drawn out and ready to go, and PMurphy42[Patti] too actually but thought
I would try the guys first to get the hair down before messing her up lol.

I might have put in wrong

but its Coteman Paint. Strathmore paper.

I have DaVinci paints but waiting for my new palette to get here from Cheap Joes then I will scrap the coteman.

I have Strathmore, Arches, and Windsor Newton paper. I dont like the Strathmore to much. Like the Arches. and only tried Winsor Newton once. So still have to go to school on the paper thing.

Lookin really good Johnnie!!! keep up the good work as you really ARE growing with each new portait you do!

(Hint on hair, and I say this before I've actually tackled any long hair in watercolor, but it's what I do when I "paint" graphite: Like someone said earlier, don't think of all the strands exactly, but more like clumps, or masses. I usually draw very lightly around the areas that will be the lightest, or the highlighted areas. You can do a light wash in this area now.. or you can wait until the end. Both have worked for me. But, just like you shaded the nice faces you did, build the color showly, darkening more and more in the shadows, and only washing very lightly over highlights. The very last step could be to very softly add some "hairs" over the highlight, but I only do that if they show some in the reference. Does that help any? ) Oh.. almost forgot. For very light hair strands or even strands you'd like to later make dark, you can use you liquid frisket and block these out temporarily to work on areas around the hair.

Tsk...David is another one who has been holding out on us. This is very nice work of FELICIA, especially fine in that it is a first ever portrait. I see very few corrections. First, watch the values at the hairline, if too dark, it gives the appearance of pasted-on hair. The eye glint should be inner corner on one yye and outer corner of the opposite eye--so the subject does not have that glassey eyed stare. I bit less lip and more softening into the shadows at the corners of the mouth to keep it from protruding. The hair is wonderful. Skin tones, eyebrowws, eyes, nose...looks wonderful DAVID. Glad you joined the project. Looking forward to more from you.

Hi, Folks. Gosh, I'm so excited seeing all these works you have been making. The project is going so well. Today I added a new reference photo of BizzyLizzy [BettyMac] and one of Uschi as a child--with the most clever hairdo--very fun, especially as her hair is blonde--white blonde by the look of it; this is our first reference of us as a child.

Johnnie: you're doing a real nice job on this. I really like the eyes and the mustache. Also good job on the shading and the skin tones. What happened to my right shoulder? Must be an example of the disappearing edge. :D

Keep it up.

David

Hi David

Yea I hadnt noticed that to be honest lol Alan crass told me in the WIP thread I had posted on doing this portrait. Well I guess I ruffled a few feathers posting a WIP with Project painting. I just dont undertand that. They say takes too much room. Moving claps take up more room than a few small pics do. Not only that Alan Cross posts pretty near all his pics from his projects in a new thread in Watercolor forum and didnt see anyone say anything to him. Whats with that!! Some are heroes and some are peasants I spoz lol lol ;) Tis life. There is always someone trying to piss in someone's cornflakes huh !!!! :)

Anyway I have cut down the paper to where it is suppose to be on the reference and added the other shoulder.

I would have never noticed that I dont think .
Thanks to you David and Alan for pointing it ouit.

I tried to get a different expression. This is me coo-ing at my new granddaughter.....poor kid. Imagine what they must be thinking of all us nutty adults making faces at them.
I thought it would be a challenge to paint.

Hi Johnnie...I'm really impressed with the leaps and bounds you're taking in portrait painting.
I noticed your WIP thread and I do think that a WIP on a second thread should be o.k. When I check the projects I very seldom comment on the WIPs because I think the piece might be finished in the completed projects section.
Also, a WIP is a learning tool for everyone. Those who don't check the "Portrait Project" thread, because they are not in it, miss out on a good lesson.
Just my opinion.:)

Hi Rose

Thanks for the comments. Yes my sentiments exactly about some people NEVER look in the project pages and a progression of what I did, good or bad, would have been missed I would have thought there would be encouragement for putting up my steps of the portait rather than being chastized for putting it the wrong place.
My thought was that others with slim knowledge as myself or less might have learned a trick or two watching the progression. But Alas ! I was wrong. tish tish tish!! :)
lol Oh well.!! live and learn. But stubborn as I am I will continue to do same if it presents itself.

Hi Nandi.

Well thats the poorest excuse I ever heard. Have you heard of monochrome painting. Well then, Get out that big pail of latex yellow or purple or what ever you have and give us a painting or 3 of some of the participants here in a monochrome value/shadow painting by Latex house paint.

Gail, this is wonderful work of DAVID. I have nothing to contribute except that which you know: reds are staining, so take care when laying them. This I always advise, but always forget in my own work. Good shading on the hat, too. Now try adding a bandana or something around the brim for more interest and texture.

Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/image_viewer.php?entry_id=27257http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/526/completed/21995/tn_portrait%236Zyffyr_%5BTerralyn%5DFINAL.jpg
Betty, you are cruisin'!! Look at the improvement you have made in your work! This of TERRALYN is wonderful....I'm so pleased, you are having so much fun. Good on the hair, too. Watch the eye glints, though to avoid that glassey-eyed stare--if the left eye glint is at the inner edge, then the right eye glint is at the outer. Very good on the eye undernearth area. Smashing teeth and lips. And, even a necklace!

WEELLLLL. We are playing so nicely in this Project, that I hesitate to address an issue for taking up of sides, but since it has been brought into the Project, I am going to. The Project rules state that works [I take that as 'produced FROM PROJECT REFERENCES'.] are to be shown in the project. In this Project, the rationale is for all images to be viewed together, as done by different participants, to see different styles, if you will. We are encouraged to critique the work done by others, as we have painted the same reference--that's how we help each other.

I certainly have no authority to demand we adhere to the rules we agreed to. I can only maintain my own standards of playing: I do not reply to individual threads which I know to belong in a Project. Period. I do not care who produced the work being presented in the individual thread--the action is against the concept and I have agreed to the concept. I feel that if you want to show your work in an individual thread, do not use a reference taken from a Project.

Hi Fookie

Well I know you are addressing my WIP post and maybe someone else maybe not. I looked all over for rules before ever putting my WIP on the thread in the Watercolor Forum. If I would have seen anything along the lines of NOT being allowed to post anywhere else then it would not have happened. Period.

I would however like to see this rule book. Like I said I looked before and now since reading your note and still cannot find anything that refers to this. Even in your preamble to the Project there is nothing said about this. I even read every section of this and cannot find anything about not posting somewhere else this page that has all the question answer about 'Projects'

http://www.wetcanvas.com/help/category.php?catId=10

If this is the way it is. Then thats great. I wont do it again. But I do think there should be a clear and concise rule about this so I and others wont do this. I received email's as to my posting in my WIP thread asking what's this not allowed to post etc. So I am not the only one who thinks its OK.

I am not wanting to tick you off by no means but like I said a clear defined rule on a RULE PAGE might be in order. Not just for me but for EVERYONE !!

If my entry here to this project using DavidBR is looked upon as I had cheated or something along those lines because I posted a WIP in a seperate thread you may delete my entry. Or better yet let me know and I will do it. No problem

I do hope you take this as not getting on your case etc etc. All I want is clarity. If your note above about your feelings on the rules, that I can't find anywhere, is the CLARITY then so be it. I got no problem with that. ;) And I will follow your wishes. looking upon them as rules.

Hey, Johnny, this of DAVID is great. Just LOOK at how far you have come in such a short time! Kudos! No eyeliner, either--looks like you figured that one out!!! Just a 'hit' of the darkest black under the brim will recede that area more--look at your reference for positioning, IF you decide to do this. Little brown 'smears' in the 'stash will give some texture, if you wanted texture. Good job on the b/g! excellent, were it me, I'd make the overall much lighter tho, so the values of it do not compete for attention w/the values of the David character.

Little Old Lady [JoAnn] and NgKK reference photos have been added to Project for your painting pleasure. Wait until you see the blouse NgKK is wearing, a challenge worthy of a project in and of itself.

I am not feeling very brave but just tired enough to think, oh what the hell.

This is the first portrait of anyone I have ever done. The photo of this watercolor was taken with a computer camera so it is very dark but I need to start somewhere so here goes: My self portrait'

JoAnn...really love your minimalist approach with the brush! It looks as if a few well placed strokes and voilla..person captured.
The same with the Johnnie painting. Good to see you here! :)
