Hi - new to the forum and new to online WIP critique. I'm a lapsed creative trying to find a way to start working regularly. As part of that process, I have been working on a portrait for a friend that has dealt with 20+ years of persistent depressions and psychological trouble, but has finally started to surface into the light - hence the tepid (bug sincere!) title. Wanted to use a childhood photo as the base for a warm, vibrant portrait, but I've hit a speed bump and could use some help. I am generally happy with the likeness, but something is bothering me about the image. I can't put my finger on it, but it's bothering me. The image is probably 50% complete, and I'm trying to avoid heading down the wrong road. Any advice/crit would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading and for any feedback!

Draw a line from the middle of the forehead, down the nose and down through the middle of the mouth/teeth to the chin and you'll see that the chin is not on that mid-line.

And, have you measured the space between the eyes? It should be the same as the width of the eye itself.

Don't give up on this. It's coming along.

Spot on Dana! I setup a grid overlay for each image and you're absolutely correct, the chin is off center and long, while the subject's left eye was more than half an eye too far toward the left ear. I'm a lot rusty, and usually double check these things ahead of time...back to work!

Thanks!

Agree with Dana
Must say that you have made a very good start on this portrait

Started working through the measures and found a bunch of things that were off, so I start tweaking and tuning and I believe I'm much happier with the results. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks again!

Thanks Andrew! I tend to work zoomed in and it seems I lost track of the whole while working on the parts. Dana's suggestions nailed the big issues and helped me track down some other minor problems. Likeness has definitely been improved, but there's still a long way to go. Appreciate the kind words!

I only have the white eyed version, but it's an amazing improvement on the first version! Great effort so far and well worth tweaking to get the desired result! I have had to tweak many paintings myself even though I didn't want to start over or ruin what I thought was ok! But in every case I am so happy in hindsight. 😀 Great job so far and am looking forward to the next step. You are a very brave artist to attempt a portrait, they scare me so much ! =)) cheers Debs.

Hmm, ok, trying a different tactic. I've been updating this as a work in progress in DA and posting direct links. Maybe it would be better to post to the DA page instead?

Did not have much time to work on this over the weekend, but did manage to make a few more tweaks. Starting to work on the irises, the teeth and ears. Just beginning to mess with the hair. Thanks for the kind words! I wouldn't define myself as a brave artist, but I appreciate the encouragement. :)
