Hi Ken, what kind of paper would you recommend for this drawing class?
On the student access page, Ken posted: This course will require some simple materials: Regular white paper, kneaded eraser, HB and 6B pencil for first class

 Hi Ken and the rest of you Big Kids
Just registered and I am excited about this class. Hope we have access to download videos in the near future, as unavoidably I will probably miss the first and last class, Whaaaaah.

Ken Instructor
05-22-2013, 05:34 PM
Downloads will be available, not the edited ones, sicne that would take too long to edit down and would be of charge.

USe the utensils I recommended unless you already have your own habits. Just get a large good sketchbook with a decent tooth, or not. Just experiments as to what you'll like.

Downloads from the previous webinar is almost out. It has been out of my hands now.

Thanks Micki for helping out.

By the way, any general inquiries I suggest you all post them here instead of emailing me. This way I can focus more on the class preparation and less on answering questions which answers can be provided here in the thread by your peers. I appreciate this. I need to keep my mind totally on the art for now.
Best,
Ken.

Ken, thank you for such a wonderful class I did not draw along because didn't want to miss any part of your technique in handling the charcoal marks on the paper to make the darks, midtones, and light values. I have a lot of sticks and pencils, but I really have never used them to do a finished drawing of a figure, mainly for sketching.
If it is possible, in the next class, would you please elaborate a little on the materials, such as: Charcoal sticks(hard, soft, square, round) paper(rough, soft, illustration board, color) pencils (colors) erasers, fixative, charcoal artists, and books. The American Artist's magazine have published some amazing works in charcoal.

This was done with a graphite pencil. I had trouble with the mouth but when I went to correct it, I only made it worst. Since I don't do a lot of drawing, this has been a steep learning curve for me. It really helped me, right from the start, when you showed me how to place the head in relationship to the hathttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/02-Jun-2013/141417-IMG_0423.JPG . Normally , I would get frustrated trying to draw the contours of the face.

THIS IS FROM KEN !!!

"Hi guys, I have been struggling to get on the thread lately, I am not neglecting you all. I have reviewed your drawing and I must say I am very happy with them, I think this teaching method is working. I am not giving for now so much particular advice, but am hunting for general 'mistakes' or happy accidents in order to influence my next class. So I guess next class we will do another lift off exercise with the charcoal and pencil too. I will review some of the stuff I discussed last class as well.
For charcoal, I recommend soft sticks and pencil, kneaded eraser and a good paper of some tooth, let them know in the art store what you need it for. I generally have not exhausted all the options in terms of materials, so I cannot give out my favorite brands or supplies, like I can in oils. Charcoal so far has been experimental and am exploring it! When I can get in I will review what I can from your submissions.
Thanks, and see you next class,
Ken
p.s. Thanks for the compliments."

I agree everyone has done great work.
Olva--I think we both have a couple hotsy-totsy ladies here. Your Mrs. Hunter has a sheepish look to her like she has something under that bonnet of hers. Mapper--I think the eyes on old Bart say a lot about your chap. He looks like he's a little sly. They look good to me. My guy has a crooked head because I did it sitting down and flat--must angle my work I see.
I love this class! Suppose drawing was my first love from age 4.

Here are the two drawings that I did during last Saturday's Draw Along. Both are done on newsprint with vine charcoal, black conte, charcoal pencil, and kneaded eraser. I really enjoyed the class and was able to keep up just fine. Lots of great information! I especially liked the second drawing where we used a kneaded eraser to pull out the light areas from the darkened background. I had never tried that before and I loved how much easier it was to actually get a likeness so quickly! I did end up reworking the face quite a bit though, which is why I didn't post earlier. Thanks for a great class Ken! I am looking forward to the next one.

I have not tried anything like this for over 40 years and really did not truly explore it then but Ken inspired me to try so here is my drawings. Was only using a sketch pad so will have to try some of the other papers too. Any comments would be welcome!!!!!

I'm posting this portrait hoping for help. I've used a phthalo green over the dark lavender behind the young girl and a lighter version of the same colours behind the Great Grandmother. The colours don't show that well in the photo and the skin tones look chalky (not in the painting though). The concept was meant to be the passing of the generations, so I was wanting to sort of fade things behind the elderly woman. However, I'm wondering if I should be darkening the entire background? The eyes show in the photo as well - they don't stand out so much in reality. Any advice given will be gratefully received.

Thank you all for the birthday greetings. I'm at a tremendous loss right now, because my computer crashed and it's currently at the "Geek Squads" trying to salvage whatever can be done. I have all Jo's pictures, and quite a few downloads of past classes as well as purchased lesson's I hadn't even finished reviewing, so It's going to be quite a loss. Hope he does get out a book so I can see all the lesson reviewed and try to recapitulate stuff stored in my head but now lost on computer. Oh the joys of technology (and old age)_ they really aren't compatible. Lildip

I am really enjoying Ken's class. Also looking forward to the upcoming paintalong with Johannes. The website says "the fee includes streaming recordings in case you miss a class. However, the downloadable recordings will be sold at later dates." Not sure I know what the "streaming recordings" are vs. the downloadable. I guess streaming means if we miss a class there will be a link where we can watch them -- but not download? Just wondering because I will miss the first two classes in that session.

It was a great class today. I hope someday I can progress to where my drawing looks something like the reference photo. I am working at moving away from measuring (which is how I was taught - to drawing by looking and seeing.) So this class is really great for me and is identifying some weaknesses to work on. I didn't really finish this drawing ... but it's a lesson, and I've gotta run, so am considering it done. Great class Ken - thanks.

now you will see a whole list of things all 'ticked'. you can either leave it like that and click 'clear browsing data' at the bottom. or untick (by clicking on them) the ones you DON'T want to do. but at least i would click 'delete cookies' and 'empty the cache'.
and then click the 'clear browsing data' at the bottom.

This is my attempt at a portrait sketch.

I am new to drawing, so not sure what I'm meant to do. I think it was a fluke that he looks a little bit like the sketch.

Practice, practice, practice that's the name of the game from now on. Loved the classes Ken, keep up the great work! Hope you are planning more drawing classes in the near future.

To get this darker, I used a watercolor black pencil. Then I thought hey, how about a little color on the sail and it went on from there. Now putting up with a cough from this charcoal dust. DUN with that stuff. :crossfingers:
Oh, the red in there came from trying to make a color close to Sargent's with the pencils I had.

I thought I would do a woman of character like my Grandma. This is graphite drawing but I think I learnt a lot from the charcoal.

Ken, I can't find the thread you began for portraits. I'm going to put my self portrait here. It's just a beginning, but I'd appreciate any input. (I had trouble with the mouth) thank you

I do appreciate the attempt to get some temperatures working in there, in fact, if you use just blues greys and yellow greys, you will have everything you need!

Great! It sure looks like the original, and best is I can actually identify the people. I am unsure why people had such a hard time with that while I was doing the class.

great character and expression... just simplify the hard, don't think in strands.

I recommend you stop thinking so much in hair strands, lines etc., and think more about tone and value.

i used a soft pencil instead of charcoal..

More value, get bolder with your tones. The statue turned out pretty well!

not gonna do this interior...i can't make head or tail of the shapes in it...and i went to bed before i saw ken tackle it...

This is common, we tend to want to make sense of the shapes (left brain), so that we can interpret what they are in our way, but the right brain just has to see shapes with no meaning. So, it is a good exercise for the right brain, when it comes to just seeing and copying shapes, but not so good for left brain.

Hi Ken,

Here is my trial , maybe an alien again, but I've done my best!!!!

Enny.

After what you just said, what more is there for me to say, if you yourself know what is 'wrong' with it.

If you used that grid at any point, then I give you a slap on the wrist!!! No gimmicks!!!! I never get tired of saying to be entirely independent of anything other other than your eye or hand.
