Figured I'd try the upload feature :)

I think I'm about finished with this thing, I was working on it a little while ago, and it's on the verge of being fixed to death. :P

At this point I just need to do another one and leave out the mistakes that I keep seeing and fixing. hehe

I'll edit the thread and add a few more later, just getting set up to convert to digital, haven't done much of that. Time to start posting on Etsy.

1/16th sheet (5 1/2" x 7 1/2" ish) Fabriano Artistico Natural White 140# CP, M. Graham and Maimeri Blu mixed palette, possibly a couple of Da Vinci's mixed in there somewhere. :P

Congratulations on mastering the uploader Karl.

A striking bird. If it is finished it should be posted in the Gallery.

Nice work. The bird is really well painted but I think the background is a bit too heavy & distracting from the delicate little thing.

Love the bird! I agree that the background is a bit heavy. Good job on the tree trunk.

A fine specimen indeed. What a beautiful golden bird.

Karl, great job on the eye especially. The nice thing about doing a piece over is that it goes much more quickly the second time :-) I hope you do well selling on Etsy. Another good place is Fine Art America (http://fineartamerica.com/). They don't take any commission on the sale of your prints and a buyer can contact you directly for an original. They make their money on the mats and frames and the gallery wrapped prints.

Karl,
Your Golden Oriole is lovely. Terrific job on the wing and the eye.

I agree that the background is a bit strong and trying to steal the show from the bird. What would you think of a bit of a crop to zero in on the bird a bit more?

Thanks for all the comments and help everyone :)

That's a good point, Sylvia! Actually, the precut mat that I have for the picture crops it to just about that very size.

The next one that I do, I'll reduce the saturation of the background a bit. The sad thing is that before I started 'fixing', the yellow on the bird was much more striking, and it really popped off the page.

I had a couple of the shadows get away from me, however, and as I cleaned them up, then put them back in, then cleaned them up, etc., the yellow kept getting squashed. :(

There's a couple of other things I'd like to fix there, but I think I just need to cut my losses on that one. The next one will go much better, I'm sure.

The funny thing about that eye, I was really nervous about being able to preserve the white on the highlight while getting the pupil correct, but it just fell together perfectly! I almost 'fixed' it a little, but was smart enough to lay the brush down and look at it when dry. The only thing I'll do different on it next time is to give the highlight just a little more curve to follow the sphere of the eye better.

I'll post some more pictures later, getting pretty sleepy waiting on a package to arrive with more paints to sort out.

Thanks again all :)
