I honestly cant tell if this is good or kind of horrifying.... it is meant as a gift, and the likeness is good... but I'm just not sure about it... (a little kitchy I dont mind)... (maybe what I mean is- does her face look frozen/fake smile?)

this is the first time I've used canvas for watercolour, and it lifts quite easily, so any hints about sealing it are welcome as well!

Hi Moirah - This is a very nice portrait. You seem to think her mouth needs work. First, I'm glad you didn't paint in the teeth. Painting them in draws too much attention to the teeth. You could use some dark value in the corners of the mouth blending out the color to nothing toward the center. You might also want a dark wash (I would stay with the lavender) behind the man on the left side of the painting to frame his face a little. Don't lose the beautifully painted yellow background above his shoulder. This is going to be a welcomed gift!

I really cannot help you much Moirah because I'm not a portrait artist. If this is a good likeness then you're doing very well. I agree about darkening the corners of her mouth a bit. I like the "hint" at teeth. I think it's looking good and just needs a bit of tweaking and it'll be finished.
