View Full Version : Creek
Could I have some C & C on this. Is it ready for the garbage maybe?
Size 11" x 15" on arches 140# , Winsor Newton paints. Here is the ref pic I worked from, I printed it in grey scale to work from. http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showphoto.php?photo=85264&cat=fav
Here is the painting, I tried simplifying it by leaving out lot of the rocks.

It wouldn't go in my garbage! I think the colors are lovely. I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions...the main thing I noticed is that there are no shadows on the water to define the edge of the creek banks.

Definitely not garbage! putting in more darks would seem to be what is needed.....IMHO.
Jan & Lynn,Thank you for commenting. Yes I can see how putting more darks along water edge would help. I'll give it a try. Thanks again! :crossfingers:

Kya, you have received some good advice. Add a few suggestions of shadows on the water plane, stop and frame the painting. You're finished once that's done. Congratulations on a fine painting.
Thanks Virgil I will do as suggested. Appreciate your taking a look and commenting. thanks much

Your color palette is beautiful in this painting. I like how you did minimal detailing to suggest the bushes, but the viewer sees them there. Not easy to do, but you carried it off so well.
You might consider adding another rock farther back in the water. The rocks in the foreground are a bit symmetrical and you might break that up with a third group not in line with the first two. ;)
BTW, I've moved your thread to The Studio which is where we ask for help with a painting like this. :D

I like Sylvia's idea of adding another rock or two. But other than that I think it's lovely. You've chosen a beautiful palette and I like your leaves here and there; but leaving most to our imagination. Nice work.

Definitely NOT garbage material, Donna. Very nice color blending. I do think that you have too many colors. A green, yellow, orange, violet would be perfect. The blue is too distracting. Perhaps if you gently washed out the whole blue grassy-bush area (leave the rocks and lower left) and added a variation of the green yellow, orange from the upper right. Cover the left side with your hand and see if you like it better without the blue.
I have made changes that were suggested, added more rocks down stream, shadow under the weeds on right, and toned down blue on left simply by adding a wash of yellow over the blue area and here is where its at now.
