View Full Version : AL Spyer/Firestone ( commissioned WIP )
Commissioned by Firestone and Sam Schmidt's Paralysis Foundation to honor Firestone Racing Executive Al Spyer retiring from Firestone after 30+ years in their racing program.
Painting will be presented to Al next month at Sam Schmidt's "Racing to Recovery" gala and auction in Indianapolis Al is this years recipient of the "Legends of Racing" award.
For the design I chose the iconic Firestone "F" and placed all the images within it. The folks at Firestone chose all the images for the piece. Choosing ones they felt were important to Al's career, which includes mostly cars and drivers in Indy car racing. Also included were "then & now" pictures of Al, including a car he raced as well.

All laid out on the Arches w/c board

A great start. The portrait is fabulous! Congrat on the commission!.
Thanks Doug & Jan!
Finished Al's race car, so it's onto the large image of the 1995 Scott Pruett Firestone sponsored Indy car. This car helped launch Firestone's return to Indy Car racing.

WOW...you are a VERY brave man! THis is going to be awesome; so detailed; but you always handle the details very well. Thanks for the WIP so that we can come along for the ride. ;)
Progress on 1995 Patrick Racing/Scott Pruett Indy car......top of the "F" is starting to take shape!!
While finishing the Pruett car I began some work on the image of the Parnelli Jones owned and Al Unser driven Indy car. It's depicted in the pits at Michigan in September of 1974 the same year Al joined Firestone. Ironically Firestone announced they were getting out of racing at the end of 74, this was the last race they won, before their return to Indy racing in 1995.
This is also the only b&w image in the whole piece

Al Unser Sr. car is nearly done.....just a little work to be done on the nose of the Pruett car where it meets the Unser image....then it's back to full color!! This will be of the 1995 Andre Ribeiro CART/Indy Car This car was special to Al because it won in late 1995 in New Hampshire when Ribeiro passed Michael Andretti and drove away for the win. Andretti later credited Ribeiro's Firestone tires for the win....Andretti ran on Goodyears

Bruce, how amazing it is to see how you can get so much in such a small space!! Wow, impressive details, as usual!!
Thanks Katherine! :)
Kind of hammered through the next image, so just the picture of it finished here. Still have ample time to finish, but will be gone this weekend, so had to make up some time before I go.
Next will be the image to right of this car, featuring Indy racer Arie Luyendyk and Firestone Racing team members ( including Al ) celebrating Firestone's 50th Indianapolis 500 win in 1997.

Absolutely awesome, well done! Congrats on the commission, as well :)

Great progress, I agree about the lettering which I find very difficult.

Fantastic so far! Love all the tiny details from the lettering to the intricute car parts.
Wish I had taken more "in progress" pics lately, but trying to just get it done at this point.
Image showing Al ( right side holding banner ) and other Firestone racing staff celebrating their 50th Indianapolis 500 win along with 1997 Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk.....just 3 more to go!!
Next up 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier, this was Firestone's first Indy 500 win after their long hiatus from racing.

Thanks Suzanne! Feel more blessed than good!
Okay I made myself take early pictures on the Buddy Lazier image.....beginning stages on the infamous Borg-Warner Trophy

Such minute details; I am in awe of how you accomplish it.

Nearing the finish line Bruce. Wonderful detail as always, and still staying inside the lines :D . This will certainly be well received.
Hey Mike!! Ye hoping to see the finish line soon!!
Work on "now" portrait of Al....
05-19-2013, 12:11 PM
Al's "now" portrait is done!!.....onto last image....it's of the 2012 IZOD Indycar Champion Ryan Hunter-Reay Shot depicts just the cockpit section of the car, but allowed for the Firestone logo to be seen on the car and blurred on the front tire.
DONE!!!! Will put it away and look fresh at it tomorrow, then see if there's anything I want to maybe touch up.
Besides, it may take my hair dryer the rest of the day to cool off!!

Outstanding work! Why were you doing your hair while you were supposed to be painting, though? :p
Ha Karl! Many more deadline scrapers like this and I'll have no hair to style!!
Okay I had this idea running through my head the whole time....so got out the thin painters tape and taped off a red outline...now it's done, they may even pick it up tonight!!
