View Full Version : Up the Road
A local hill road rendered with the help of impressionist style and outrageous color. :)

Absolutely beautiful and trees are my favorite part of it.

Wow Derek, this is a beauty! I love the color of that sky, the road is done so very well, and yes, those trees are to die for! The power lines are magical, they add such interest and somehow keep my eyes in the painting, brilliant!

beautiful! love the shadows and the colors in the roads
I like how you break the rules with the strong road line almost in the middle
Yes, once you know the rules you can break them, right? How beautiful can asphalt be! Your colors are magical, I love every part of the painting, and each of them has an important role to build up a beautiful landscape in a magical light.
Now I just need to get my eyes of the screen...

Wow indeed....the road looks unbelievably real...
This is great !
I love your trees and the texture of the road.
Did you use a colored paper ?I can see red peeking through every here and there.

Nice 1! Love the trees and the schadow of the fence? Great!
04-22-2013, 02:24 AM
Very beautiful light and atmosphere ! Color of sky is perfect and your manner of underlining the drawing, definitely very well in your painting: acquired effect is very good.

O.K.......I see the 'photo' but where's the painting?....
 very well done my friend......that blue asphalt with the line smeared through it really caught my eye.....so realistic in an impressionist way....

I agree with what everyone said!!! I had to scroll back because I thought it was the photo. Double WOW WOW from me!!

Really nice, love how you have made such a simple scene look so interesting.
is brill love the road what pastels did you use? and what grade paper is this?
04-22-2013, 11:16 AM
I used to drive by here every day on the way to work. In the morning, there would be a state trooper staked out at the bottom to catch speeders as they came over the hill.
04-22-2013, 12:03 PM
WOW.....Derek is now painting in Texas......that guy gets around!....
04-22-2013, 12:08 PM
You did it again, took something ordinary and made it amazing! Love it!
Thanks so much:
Chris: I love powerlines and telephone poles.
Mado: I added touches of red.
Shirl: Slow down on that road.
Blue.......behave yourself jersey boy:lol:

It's your color choices that make this such an outstanding painting. As mentioned, even the blacktop looks amazing.
04-22-2013, 08:51 PM
I love your unusual color combinations and how you make a simple scene so interesting.

Beautiful painting. Lot of great aspects to the painting, but I really like the cast shadows, especially the ones across the road, that are cast by something that is not even in the picture. Great touch of artistry.
04-22-2013, 09:13 PM
Well done, Derek! Did you do a red under painting on this painting?
04-23-2013, 02:34 AM
Wow Derek this is wonderful. Love everything about it. Great use of colour. Would love to see what's over the hill, hope you've painted it!
Hey You Guys: Thanks

More good stuff coming out of your studio, as always. Love it, such a common simple view, yet so vibrant and dramatic.
I especially like the leaves and stuff on the ground. Most landscapes I see are just too clean of debris. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/23-Apr-2013/873122-hatsoff.gif

Outrageously well done Derek!!!! I am impressed once again.
04-24-2013, 06:43 AM
WOW, all in this painting is awesome!!! the road, the trees, the sky, the shadows in the grass... congratulations for this work, Derek!!!

- turn the top edge of the left side of the road a bit more left to get the roll of the top of the rise ...
i can't believe i'm writing this ...
Thanks so much.
Ed; Hello glad you liked it.

I really like this piece. You've got a lot more hard edges here than I usually see in pastel landscapes. They are very well handled, and softened just enough where necessary to stop the painting from looking too hard to me. The warm sky definitely works too.
Hi, Thanks Jamie. I appreciate your stopping by.
I used to worry about edges but have found an intuitive way of working comfortably and they just happen where appropriate. The spectre of the "painterly police" no longer hounds me. I have a background in illustration and photorealism....so this is a factor for sure.

Wow, really like it!
Hi There Marcus,

Hey Derek, better late than never for another awestruck viewer. This is a real beauty! I am always attracted to non-blue skies and this one is just gorgeous.
Nice to see you Donna, thanks so much.
Yep....I grabbed the pale blue for the sky and thought NAH! gotta do something different. It was actually threatening to storm that day, so sometimes you get a yellow or green tint in the sky.

Per usual I'm late the show but this is really stunning Derek. I love the simplicity of it all and that soft but warm sky!

This is a great painting. I was sharing your sky color choice with people in my pastel class. Teacher said we will try different color skies in the future. What inspired you to use the sky color you did in this painting? Thanks. Pam
Nooners: So nice to hear from you....missed you. Thanks.
RuthieMartha: Thanks dear.
Judi and Lorene: Thanks so much.
Hey there Pam: read my answer to DonnaT and thanks:wave:
want to see what is just over the hill? You go up the road and then you are met with this; not bad for New Jersey eh?
