I actually finished this a year ago, in a first try at the indirect method: but my own painting seemed so ham-handed to me that I backed off from oils, to focus exclusively on drawing the figure. Having improved my eye and hand somewhat, I'm just now starting back down the oil path (must try not to slip this time), so it seemed like a good moment to post this.

Roughly same size as the original, 18" x 16". I'm not well set up to photograph artwork, so this is fuzzier than my actual painting, but the color balance is about right at least.

For the record, here's a photo of the (I think completed) grisaille. I'm sure the turban was brighter than this crappy cellphone photo makes it appear, but it's the only in-progress picture I took, so ...

Wow. Beautiful work. I did the same thing you did, took a year off and exclusively worked on my drawing and figure drawing. Now its time to take up the paints!

Thanks, meganj. I'm trying to learn to work in a direct manner, and finding it pretty challenging--I don't know whether I'll end up preferring to paint that way, or indirectly, but it seems important to develop the skill. I just keep telling myself that after all it's all still drawing ...
