A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Clear Glass as Subjects
Project Leader: Sylvielu
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Still Life
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

I thought it would be good to start a new project painting clear glass subjects. Also it will be interesting to know what you found most challenging in using clear glass as a subject.

All work must be in watercolor and don't enhance the final entry other than resizing. It iwll be helpful to give the finished size and list the brand of paints used.

It doesn't matter what subject you choose as long as it's made of clear colorless glass.

Bottles, vases, decanters, eyeglasses, plates, ashtrays and goblets are just a few of many things made of colorless glass.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=528)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

sounds great, syl...count me in!

09-09-2003, 06:59 PM
That's great Pam! And I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I hope all will join in this project.

I did the ashtray on Arches 12 x 16 cp 140# block.

I used WN ultra blue, Davey's gray, DS blue ocre and pyrrol orange. I also used masking fluid.

The most challenging part was drawing, masking and trying to figure out what was masking and what was Davey's gray. Next time maybe I will tint the masking fluid a different color!

Sylvilu, I am not quite clear, re clear glass LOL i.e. can there be wine in the clear glass or fruit, or flowers or is it supposed to be a still life with glass only.

Hi Ushi, I'm sorry for not being clearer!

I don't care what is in the glass object as long as the glass itself is clear (not transparent color).

OK I've uploaded my drawing in preparation for the painting..
Next step is to mask off the light areas..I'll have to save the whites, as these areas are so tiny..
here goes.should be fun..thanks Sylvie:)

Sylvielu, I have a beautiful clear glass pitcher that a friend gave me many years ago... I've been carting it around from house to house and have never put it to good use... seems I'll have to get it out, dust it off and finally do something positive with it! :D

I can't promise that I'll get to it right away... but I'm signing up!

Sylvielu

Gnu and Char I'm happy that you both have signed up for the project! I want to do another one myself. I just have to find out which box is packed with the water goblets.

I have discovered the key to me liking my own work in WC, is drawing first..(I don't do this with acrylic)

I have a question if you don't mind. Our offices at work are all lined with glass block around each "cube" and I always thought it would make a very interesting painting. I mean, all of the cool shapes formed by the objects behind these blocks. (It's strange, but I even took so reference pics today not knowing about this project) Would something like that work for this?

thank You JJ :) ..I decided to pick a real simple glass and just do it...if I'd waited to do one I really loved, I'd still be deciding!!(that's NOT a criticism, but an understanding of the process:D)

Amazing what happens when we really really LOOK and then have patience! I like this a lot... The dots on the napkins are phenomenal! And I love the colors.... The glass itself seems to just be living there as naturally as we live in the air.

thanks Sylvie..I thought the most challenging part was the overlayed lighter reflection of the lower glass..at first I did it the ochre, but then realised it needed an overwash of the blue..then it was just right..
I would have been tempted to add finer and finer detail..I guess I stopped when I felt it looked like a glass!!:D
I placed it bottom up for interest, and because then it might look like at a table setting..

Fiestaware? is that what the china is? neato...
must've taken patience in the drying process for those little areas in the glass(reflections of the plates).

This is terrific. Lots of color in the Fiestaware, but the glass still stands out as the star of the show. I really like the way you have the teapot distorted as you look through the body of the glass and the color bands from the dishes that dip as you view them through the stem

I may have talked abot this in one of the other Fiestaware threads...don't remember

The orange is perinone orange and Quin siena mostly
Blue is cobalt and FUB
Green is viridain and yellows and manganese blue, I
think

LOL

you know I dip in the pallette and don't pay that much attention

Oh, the redish one is Indian red mixed with some permanent rose.....

I found these two pieces of clear glass to be unexpectedly harder to paint than I expected them to be. As Bobbie Burns wrote "The best laid plans of mice and men, gang aft aglay." :(

I know, I know, the bottle is leaning to the right. Couldn't change it once the dark green was in though.

Like you in your two examples above, I found the smooth glass in my set up rather difficult to do.

I am going to give the photo Uschi posted in the Daily Wash the other day a shot. Even though there is smooth glass, there are also a lot of color reflections showing through.

You're not kidding about the clear glass. I thought I was picking somethint interesting, something that has caught my eye for months- glass wall blocks! And, if i had just stuck with maybe 1 or 2- not that bad.. but.. NO... I had to try a 1/3 of the wall!!! The weirdo shapes are something else though. I sure hope I can pull it off!

Thanks, Uschi. The brandy bottle is a matte finish so not a lot of highlights were there. IRL, there is a lighter area along the front where the light was hitting.

JJ, The color of the scarf in the bg is viridian hue. It is one of my favorite colors too.

Started adding color to my drawing of Uschi's reference photo of two clear glass candles with clear liquid and cloth wicks.

So far I'm happy with it. I'm trying to just think shapes and pay attention to all the colors I see reflected or through the glass.

Thank you Char for looking and commenting. The double heart box was a gift from my mom, the bottle of olives I bought a couple of weeks ago and the milk bottle was made in Italy. I purchased it at a thrift store back when I was in Kentucky. It's one item I haven't let go.

The ashtray (I have two) came from a dollar store and I've had them as long as the milk bottle.

Thanks Char, Pam, Felica, SylvieLu, and Uschi, for your kind words on my glass attempts.

I've added dark to the right side. Haven't finished with the glass candle there yet, just the background. It is more difficult than the one in front was because there is less color reflected and the dark background shows through. I'll do what we always tell JJ though and take my time.

This is stage 2 of my painting. I'm calling it "The Ugly Stage" and am hoping I can make it look better eventually. I read Pam's comment in the Motherwash thread yesterday about sometimes putting up to 20 washes to make her colors glow. I'm only at 4 or 5 so maybe there is still hope.

I'm finding the back candle harder to do for some reason than the front one was. I need to add more darks behind and in it, I think. Right now it isn't reading very transparent to me.

Will also add some shading to make the pearls look separate and round, just put a pale yellow wash over most of them so far.

THANK you Sylvia!! I was worried that folks thought my idea was really lame since no one had said anything! lol. I bet your blocks have some prettier colors behind than these did as all that was behind these was some blue filing cabinets. (Hence the blue in them)

I AM concerned about my digital camera though as all my pictures like this one are coming out very distorted! (The painted area really is more squared up than showing here) So, I'll be heading to the photography or tech forum for help.

Well, I finished my glass wall blocks tonight. IRL it was a bit brighter and more intense in color, but I'm too tired tonight to try it again. Maybe, I'll get a better scan after work tomorrow.

It was a little different to say the least, but at least for me it was something unusual. The blue that you see were some blue filing cabinets that were behind these, but I thought that the "abstract" shapes they created were kind of interesting. (In some ways to me, they look like weird little men or something..lol)

Now I can go do one of the pretty arrangements like maybe the one with the red cloth and old bottle that yahooserious put in the image library.

Here is my entry. This was done with Winsor Newton paints, mostly cobalt blue, french ultramarine, and small amounts of winsor blue, perm. alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna.

I photographed my setup and worked from the photo. I painted the individual shapes as I saw them to get the look of the glass. The middle cat is frosted glass to add some variety. It was done wet into wet.

Yes they are tiles, I was lost on a background. So tile it was.

I enjoyed the challenge of the glass so much that I have drawn another, yep with tile, but no cloth, plums or cherries. Wont be able to work on them for a couple of days. But soon as I get them going good or done I will post them.

I am so taken by all of the other enteries so far, they are all wonderful.

Uschi- I love your candle it is so full of color.

Felicia- Very good idea wall blocks, you did a excellent job on them too.

Pampe- Wish I had Fiestaware, love those colors and the way you create the depth in your entries.

Painterbear- I saw your 2 candles and other paintings, very good. I have had that problem with my camera, Mine is the card thingy. I have had it for 4 years and taken way to many pictures LOL.

mhimeswc- I agree your cloth looks very nice, cant say the same about mine LOL, thats why I left it out of the next one. Nice frosting effect.

gnu- . Yours is wonderfully simple, well done, love the shading. Hope you enjoyed it enough to do another for us to see.

Well sorry I have to run now. Things to get done. I'll be back for sure.

This is a great project, and I've enjoyed everyone's paintings. Sylvielu, I like all of yours, but my favorite by far is the ashtray. I love the way you captured all the light on all those facets. It looks very jewel-like, and would make a great abstract.

Pampe, I always like your still lifes, and these two are no exception. You have caught that fragile, delicate look of those goblets very well.

Felicaks - I like glass block walls too, and it is different from the usual glass still life. You did a great job with it - it certainly looks like solid, thick glass.

Gnu - you got down to basics - a good job with the reflections on the glass. A nice, simple still life.

Painterbear - you picked a hard one, and yes, it does lean a little, but I like the composition and your wineglass looks great.

Uschi - I love it! The stripes just make the painting. I always avoid stripes because it makes things too complicated, but I love their color as a backdrop for the pearls, and the way they are distorted through the glass.

JJ, I like the composition in your photo, but I think the prints make it too complicated. Can you do a similar set up with solid colors so you can just concentrate on the light and dark shapes in the glass? Good luck with yours.

They would both make good paintings, JJ. I like the one with the strawberries and wine glass - it has great shadow shapes. The whites in my digital photos come out orangy looking too. I would guess that's from the indoor lighting in the room. Which one are you going to paint?

JJ if you use a photo manip programme(even Corel draw, photo paint, photo brush..) you can adjust the 'white balance'..slide the adjusting bar till the background looks white again and it will look great!
If you don't have this..one of us could do it for you, if you're happy about that..

Finished painting the pearls this morning. They took forever and really don't show up well in this scan. They aren't so yellow IRL and have a variety of colors on them to give them shape and luster. None of it shows well here.

Overall I'm fairly happy with this. Thanks Uschi for a wonderful reference photo to paint from, love all the colors that show in the liquid and glass surfaces.

Thank you Gnu and this one is going on my wall until I produce one I like even more.

Thank you Olga and Felica!!

Sylvilu - I have been meaning to tell you how wonderful your crystal ashtray looks. Done without photo - INCREDIBLE!!!!

JJ - thank you!!! re your photos - candle and wine glasses, it would be easier to paint if you took it in the day without a flash and let the candlelight reflect in the glasses, or even at night but without flash. The one with the strawberries and wine, you mentioned that the tablecloth was really white, you will find it easier to paint if you put something coloured underneath it because white through glass does not give you a lot of reflection and will make it harder to paint. I actually like the gold tone in the photo.

This is nicely done. You sure nailed the essence of these kinds of glass blocks. I can almost feel the smooth, heavy texture. I also like it that you allowed some, but not all, of the light to pass thru. That's a nice observation and well rendered.

lots to look at here!! wow..love the rainbowy washes at bottom, adore the deep green jades of the vase..hmm are you a detail person by any chance?? :D:D
Would have loved more of those luscious pansies to gaze upon..this vase is a winner...you should do more..

Lyn... :D: Green is one of my favourite colours... next is purple... :D: Thanks for commenting!

Thank you Susan... I was getting pretty frustrated with this and almost tossed it at one point...

Coming from you, Pam, that really means a lot!!!! *beaming*

Gill... I kept thinking that I wanted to paint loose... Every single time I tried to paint loose, I went back and "finished" it... So... I've come to the conclusion that I'm a detail person and just go with it... Actually, I was wishing that I'd put more pansies instead of the leaves, because the purple is really a nice counterpoint to all that green...

Thanks so much JJ!!!

Char,

Your GREEN glass vase and flowers are beautifully painted, BUT, you were supposed to paint only CLEAR glass for the Project. LOL!

Let me give you a clue, it is even HARDER to do than colored glass. SylvieLu came up with a real challenge here.;) :D

What a great idea to paint some of your little glass menagerie. The glass animals are very nicely painted and I love the way you showed the drapery and folds in the cloth behind them.

It is glass... It is clear... It is... green...

Thanks Uschi and Sylvia... guess I'm back to the drawing board... I've started to sketch a painting for the Challenge 3, but will definitely get a CLEAR glass painting done for this project...

LOL...Felica...they are red pears..sitting on the glasses. and one glass is filled with sour balls.. Thanks for your kind comments! To be honest...I kind of forgot about the pears because I was concentrating so much on the glass!

Char...thanks...used just the 3 colors...because on first two attempts..got mud with full palette

Thanks Silvielu..yes these glasses have attitude! thank you!
