A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Boats from around the world...
Project Leader: Alan Cross
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

There are some great boat painters on Wet Canvas. Now, wouldn't it be fun to see the different boats from all over the world? All mediums are welcome. I would like to see new work just made for this project.

If you are adding photos of boats, make sure and say if we can paint them or not. The library is full of boat photos that you can use for reference if you don't live near the water. I can find some from around here for you to paint if you want. Ok, let's see those boats!!
Alan :)

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=523)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Oh, yes! I'l join if someone will please paint a gondola so I can see how it's done (not to post here, but for "Mom's Commission.") I just can't seem to get it right.

Hmmmmm . . . now that I've said I'll join the project, I'll have to learn how to paint some other boat, too. Geeezzzzz . . .

I was going through some images tonight, and many are boats, so I'll try to add some here as soon as I get a chance, and also discover how to do it.

Jillian

Unfortunately, the only gondola ref I have is a painting *borrowed* from someone's web site, and it's not a demo so I can't share it here. Maybe someone else can supply a photo or painting.

I volunteer to go take the pictures. Now all we need is someone with a jet and a villa After all if your going to Italy you need a villa to relax in after all the hard work of taking a gondola ride.. Next best thing I will be going to San Antonia in a couple of weeks I think at one time they had a type of gondola on the river walk I will check it out (But I would still rather Italy)

OK I have uploaded an image for the first time (ever) to a forum. Hope it is viewable & in the right spot. I took it over the 4th of July weekend & did some paintings from this photo & *YES* it's available for anyone to use!

the shot is called No. Calif. Lake -

thought I'd add just the one in case it's not in the right place. Boats are near & dear to me; I love their lines so I'll see what I can come up with specifically for the project.

Hi and WELCOME to Wetcanvas !

Two ways to get to the project. Go to the top and click on " Projects." You will see Alan's project " Boats from around....", click on that. The second and third lines are " upload your progress entries" and "upload your final entries."

Your images must be 600 X 500 ( I think) pixels. If they are too big, the system will tell you to reduce your image size.

Once you have a bunch of projects going, you can find different projects by going back to project page, then look to your left and you will see " My Projects"- these are all the ones you have signed up for. Open that and you will have all your options.

Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Good luck !

This is SO WELL done...don't give up

To get those richer deeper colors....keep going

You can make that same richness with watercolors

And your water is WONDERFUL in this!!!

Thanks for the challenge Alan !

Li I think you did great and I would not be tosing this one out...all you can do is learn from this one....add it to the next each is a steping stone to get to where you want to go. Don 't give up you are being way to hard on yourself.

We really need a " kicking oneself in the butt" icon. LOL.

It does get a little frustrating living in an area so isolated there are no classes available. Don't worry. I'm not quitting, going to just run off and do some quick silk paintings where I KNOW how to get darks ! LOL :D

I do have a question, would I get deeper shadows by adding more complementary color to the shadow area ?

Thanks !

This wont work for everyone but for my darks I only use UB and BS about the same of each or more blue if you like that or more brown if you like the looks of that its a very nice dark....

Looks like a little glare on the photo but you have a good start. Maybe a little shading on the boat to accentuate the shape and some variations of color in the water, some deeper colors. Look forward to seeing your finished piece.

Thanks Lisilk, Alan Cross, Artman 42 & Cathie Jones for your guidance and encouragement!!

I also went into Alan Cross' website. For those of you haven't gone in there have a peep:p
Alan I really liked your "Seahorse Cafe", "Pink Sky at Night" and the poem that went with it, "Dock stroll", "Bait Shop" & "Repairs & Rentals" paintings. These really inspired me as I love the water and boats and would love to be able to paint by the dock. My father had trawlers and i loved that pink sky at night and really anything with trawlers in it, I can almost smell the prawns, salt air and fish....

Thanks again:D

thanks Alan :)

I like the pastels as they are a fast medium for me to work with and somehow they just feel comfortable if that makes any sence.. I can be more energetic in using them than I can with watercolour at the moment.

I was also thinking it looked wrong without people and I did tentativly add a little person at the back of the boat as you spotted, a life jacket would bring this out more.. there should be more structures on the deck, but couldnt make it out on the photograph and wasnt too sure what to add, so although Im quite pleased with the boat in general there is definitly something lacking there.

And a long way from the family. but commission sales require that any way the good part is that i can grab pictures along the highway as i go. so thank you for these projects it gives me something to look forward to as i travel trying to find something good for the projects and i love the fact that i can be the eyes some of yall use for a refrence

I am so very sorry for that last quote I did not mean for it to be negitave thats what i get for writing when I am tired I just wanted to say that what sounds glamorous is not always so for people not to quit their day jobs

I feel very lucky to travel and see this great big wonderful country and world i live in and i no that there are people out there that don't have the opportunities to see the beauty unless it is in a travel brochure. I get to go on the back roads that are the roads less traveled and they are wonderful. I feel like it is a privilege to share what i get to see with people and honored when the very talented artists here think that a picture i took is worth their time to express it in their vision and style. I also know that there are many children that never get to go anywhere and I am working on a web site so they can see the world from their homes and again the world of every day people. i already correspond with several classrooms to send them pictures of what they are studying. Hopefully they will be much more interested in learning about the world around them then just a video game.

this type of site and your projects also help me find a little more enjoyment in my long day cause i am now on the look out for things that ya might not get to see if your not their at the right time and place.

So thanks to you and all the other wonderful artist here for allowing me the pleasure of sharing my world with them

You've proved there aren't any bad days for painting. This difficulty seems to bring out more creativity. I do wonder why you've given the boats painter a saturated yellow colour.

HI Mikey and thanks for the steps very interesting how you got here....I really like the tone of the boat strong whites and shadows....I am getting the feeling it needs a bit more in the water and background buildings still .....as it is the boat is very strong which is good you might just want a bit more strenght in the rest of the painting ....

Hi Alan,

I take note about the buildings. I'll see what I can do with the water. Tending to paint for long sessions I sometimes lose the freedom of the brush and try too hard after a good start. Surprisingly to me, I seemed to do best with the water using the tip of a size 22 flat hog, after trying smaller round, soft brushes.

It seems best to use an optical mix in order to keep the colours clean. I'm wondering whether or not to use Cerulean for a little bit of scintilating colour. So far it is mostly cobalt blue with ultramarine for the blacks and shadows. Otherwise cadmium red light and yellow ochre.

Mikey I like to use a little Cerulean in the water when its in a vase or sea....it seems to give that bit of glow that says water...

like the fishing boat, the sea and the mountains in the background fading out, but the sky is starting to look kind of like thick clouds of smoke to me.
The heavy sky echoed the choppy water in the previous painting (three fishing boats) but it doesnt to me sit well here and also seems less cloud like. Maybe becomming a bit too styalised?
These comments are just from me looking at them (Jo Public) and not as an "artists" eye, as I certainly dont have the skills to comment in that vien and I don't have the neccesary water colour experience to really comment on how to change it.
Just an honest opinion :)

Mikey,

This is just fabulous! You've set the boat into the water ... right into it. The softened light on the boat, water and buildings brings the blending one sees upon the waves. I look out across the bow at a shoreline drawing closer, hear the wingflap of a seagull and the see the ripple of a fish which has caught a dragonfly before popping back into his watery home.

How fascinating to see the process! I will learn much here! What a wonderful forum!

Hi, Alan!

Thanks for the response. This site is so HUGE, I'm still trying to get my bearings, LOL! But I LOVE the water. Here in my corner of the world we have over 120 named lakes, just in our county! I used to sneak away from the schoolground and go sit on Grandpa T's dock -especially when the fogs rolled in, and would dream I was sailing.

We are only about 2 blocks away from our village's lake, but when winter sets in and it finally freezes over, I impatiently count the days till the ice begins to crack, turns black and disappers into nothingness again!

I would be LOST without water around me ... these water projects are really astounding! It sure did take me back! I look forward to being here a lot, especially come winter!!!

Blessings!
Lynn:)

Hi Alan,

In the days when I used Gouache before I gave up painting for the computer I did a Chevy pickup on a beach. The idea was to show cloud and distant rain. I was using good quality watercolour paper, so wet it quite well, then laid some colour at the top of the page, held the board up and let the liquid run down at an angle. I've still got this painting, so will see if I can post it.

Hi Alan,

Here's my Chevy from my beginners days on Saunders Waterford. Sorry, the incoming rain effect is as powerful as I remembered it. Well, if he backed up a bit it would be a kind of boat, wouldn't it.
