View Full Version : WDE 30 MARCH Wish You Were Here! challenge

21.75 x 16.5 watercolor on Italia 140 lb soft press paper. Total time almost 2 hours. After cropping the scene into a vertical format, I first drew a detailed fence at the bottom...remembering all the pros say to never put a fence line horizontal across the bottom of your composition, so erased all of it and started over, only sketching the houses upper left and large foliage bushes upper right. The rest was done only with a brush...had to edit out most of the tangled branches, vines, and so forth as was too much detail. Note the tangerine orange splashes of color for the challenge. :wink2:
C&C welcome

BRAVO!!! Kay!!! This is Gorgeous, I keep scrolling back to look at it!!
I just love what you did with the Ref. We had the same thoughts about the fence, a big no no rule (though rules are made to be broken:D )...... and I like how you manuvered the composition and opened it up to the water and homes, which gave it depth, your experience and skills come through full force with this!!! Can you tell I Luv It

Thank you, Sharron. It is one of those that you want to give up on right away, about 10 minutes into the painting...LOL! Glad you like it.

You've really made this ref your own Kay, what a great take on it! I love how the eye travels to the background, but yet there is enough in the foreground for the eye to linger there just a little bit. And the progression of light to the top is fab. Great job!

The light gives a symmetrical feel that takes me right to the waters edge...great job, Kay

Beautifully painted Kay - I too keep scrolling back to look at it - reminds me of a beach at the Cape that we used to stay every summer when my children were very young.

Did you use any masking?

04-02-2013, 12:08 PM
K, I hope you won't mind a couple of questions, I so love this painting and would like to know the colour and paint that you used for the sand?.

My other question is about the paper "Italia 140 lb soft press paper" is this actually Fabriano or something else?, how do you find this to work on?

04-02-2013, 12:32 PM
Thanks everybody!
No, I generally do not ever use masking fluid, but paint around items. Paint used is American Journey by Cheap Joe's: Coastal Fog, Brown Derby, Coffee w/Cream, white gouache, raw umber, raw sienna.
Dick Blick is the only one who sells Italia Acquerello wc paper. Catalog # 10140-1012, 140 CP 22x30 10+ @ $3.14 a sheet. Call 800-828-4548. They are one of WetCanvas' main sponsors. It is not Fabriano I don't think.
