View Full Version : Jasper, an Australian Shepherd (WIP)

Hi everyone! Here is the progress for the portrait I'm currently working on...have been working on it on and off the last three days and hope to finish it over the weekend. As you can see, the photo provided by the owner is not very exciting so I decided to pay close attention to keeping the color lively. It is fun painting a black dog with the goal of using as little of my mixed black as possible!

The piece is 11 x 11, on Fabriano Artistico soft press 300 lb paper. My palette for the dog consists primarily of PB15:3 (Cyan), PR122 (Magenta), PBr7 (Raw Sienna), PR179 (Perylene Maroon), PV29 (Perylene Violet) and (sparingly) PG7+PR179 (My Premixed Black) with some very small use of PW6 (Buff Titanium), PG50 (Cobalt Turquoise), PO49 (Quin Gold), PR254 (Lukas Red), PR101 (Burnt Sienna Deep), PB60+PBk6 (Indigo by Daniel Smith), and PBr7 (Raw Umber).

Here are the first defining washes (after the background wash had dried).

Building up layers, defining as I go...

And some more...

And now starting to deepen the really dark darks and more carefully define details such as the eyes, shape of nose, coat profile and shadowing, etc.

I have 2-3 hours of work left to fix a few slight errors of form, accentuate highlights (through lifting and some slight use of white gouache), soften some edges where the coat color transitions happen, add in the fine detail hairs around the dog's outside edges, and accomplish the texturing and shading around eyes, lips and nose that will make it really "pop" as "real". I'll share the results of that effort when done over the weekend sometime.

Meanwhile enjoy and feel free to comment or ask questions.

Oh, Carole, as always, Beautiful! Wonderful job on the tongue, and, the eyes, as always, are beautifully done! Jasper's painting will be treasured!

(I was almost ready to sign off, then I saw your name, and Jasper's and just had to look! And it was a treat!)

Carole, this is wonderful. You've got the fur down perfect and that tongue is just so happy. So much better than the photo. Can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks you guys! Gonna finish this one today with any luck...but it IS so nice and warm outside, I might get distracted.

Tommy: It's all about the accuracy of one's preliminary drawing and careful observation, I swear!

I really enjoyed watching your process. Your paint does not look overworked, and you got a great likeness. I'll look forward to seeing the finished product.

Love the progression of this, Carol. It's really interesting how you build the color layers to achieve the diversity in the black.

Finally got all the fiddly bits done on this one. I'm calling this final (and it has owner approval) but I'm going to look at it a couple of days as usual to see if anything about it bugs me.

Glad to be done with all this dark fur...the next dog in the portrait queue is all golds and orangey colored. Should be a fun change!
