View Full Version : WIP - My Dad as a Young Teen

I have very few photos of my father from when he was young and all are black and white or sepia toned. I decided to try to do a painting of him - this is the beginning from today after working about an hour or so. Lots of things to refine still, but I'm pleased at the likeness already being there. I have not attempted a pastel in a very long time.

BTW, I think my Dad was quite a handsome young man and was always fascinated by the thick curly, unruly hair in his younger photos! My memories of him as an adult, his hair had thinned considerably.

Thank you for looking. I used Nupastels and its size 8 x 10.

Looking good so far Rainy! I'm assuming you're still in the process of medelling the nose? That's the only feature which, to me, doesn't quite gel. Love the eyes!

Thanks Ruthie. . . I have to do some work on the big purple shadow under his chin, and a little on the eyes, nose and mouth as well. My Dad had a huge and strangely shaped nose so its the hardest part of his anatomy to get it to look right in a painting and still have it look like him too.

I worked some more on the tones on this so it was not so much purples. Tried to adjust his nose some so it didn't look so crooked but I still need to do work on the eyes and the shaded side of his face and ear.
