View Full Version : My Outdoor Journal Sketching

Hi, these are a couple sketches in that I tried to capture a visual note of the day. The one with the map notes I think I like the best it has the most notes (information) to jog my memory of where I went and what I saw at this location on this given day. Always trying to get better at visual field notation in the form of quick sketching. Thanks for looking and commenting, Greg

Thank you Candace, This journal page started with the sketched map first, then the quick sketches of land marks along the way sort of grew around and over the top of it. Even though it’s a bit busy, I agree I think it is a neat way to record not only the destination but the journey along the way of this outdoor hike.

Still looks like winter around here where I live, but with a few hints of spring on it‘s way. These are some new sketch drawings of mine.
I first blocked in a quick pencil sketch outline, then used “Berol art marker“, then used some “Berol color pencil” over the top to soften some of the markers hard edges and vary color in places. I like this technique I first saw it demonstrated in a book called “Color Drawing” By; Michael E. Doyle in case anyone might be interested. Anyway everyone keep up the good work with your sketching , Greg

Greg, I love how you document what you see! I am especially entranced by your linework.. especially the boat sketch.
Aren't new sketchbooks the best? <3

Thank you Virginia, that sketch is a fun way to draw…that is not putting a complete boarder all around the shapes in your drawing, but rather letting the eye fill in what you have left out. It works really well for line and color wash sketching. Thanks for the nice comment, and keep sketching. Greg

These are two more graphite pencil sketches that I used color pencil over. For a quicker sketch I think the one with the little amount of color works well and holds it’s own. Anyway always fun to check in here and see every ones new drawings, everyone keep up with the great sketch books.

I like these, Greg.
It looks like you are able to capture the essence of your subject very quickly.

Those are both very nicely done. . . I especially like the form on the tree in the last one and the minimal use of color works well with it.
Your trees are terrific. What a good eye you have and ability to translate them into a drawing.
