Happy St Patricks Day All.

Anyway, after battling to get on site all day Friday and then an argument with my printer for most of yesterday, because the black cartridge was obviously empty but not empty enough fo it to move into the position to change it....

Anyway, I have some new paper i'm trying out as I hope t do a competition piece on it. I've tried it with charcoal pencils, I have one on the go with CPs so I thought I'd try PAstel pencils. It is 90% pastel pencil with a little undershading with hard Derwent Pastels...... I'm quite pleased. As I work so close things always look outrageously unblended and hard-edged so, especially with paint, I go made trying to soften and blend until from a distance everything looks flat. So this time I left it move compartmentalised and cut down on the blending. Looked awful close up. Then when I set it across the room it didn't look so bad. First layer he looked extremely pink as I didn't have a 'right' colour. I've used pinks, mauves and earth tones and even pale olive green on his face. I changed his clothing.....

'Portrait Of A Retired Space Cowboy'
10" x 14" Hahnemule Velour, neutral grey
Derwent Pastels (a little for underlayers and map),
Derwent Pastel Pencils
Took around about 4 hours.

I worked on it for a couple of hours last night before bed, took a photo and finished this afternoon for another couple of hours so about 4 altogether.

This is it before I went to bed last night about 2 hours.

A good choice of ground for your colours. Mr. Shatner looks very affluent, if a little less dashing than in the days of yore on the bridge of the Enterprise! Time and tide and all that.....!
