Hi all,
Looking for some help on blogs.I am just discovering this world of artists' blogs and can see that they can be "followed" which seems straight enough. You click on "follow this blog" or something similar but what happens then? I was under the impression that I would receive an email or some form of notification whenever there was an update on that particular blog but I must have to do something else because that is not happening.Any guidance from those more knowledgeable than me? Thanks

Both emails and RSS feeds are common Larry.

Often you will see an orange RSS icon which allows you to subscribe to the blog in Google Reader or similar. You are then updated daily with any new posts to the blog. That is my preferred method of subscribing.

That is what I thought Doug but can't seem to find that orange logo on any of the blogs I visit.I just looked at Peter's blog (watercolourfanatic) and can't see it there either? Since posting I did find a blogger reading page where I can read updates but to access that I have to be on a blog first,no email feed though?? Am lost. Will keep messin' around and see what happens

In the absence if an RSS icon you can usually enter the Blog url into the Google Reader subscribe box Larry.

I recommend Google Reader (http://www.google.com/reader/), I have a reader tab and a Gmail tab open all the time on my browser. When a new thread pops up a number appears at the side of the tab. You can also subsribe to the wetcanvas forums you follow in reader. The code is
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/external.php?type=rss2&forumids=363 where 363 in this case is the forum number at the end of the Palette Talk forum. Just substitute a different number for other forums. To see all new threads on wetcanvas use the code
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/external.php?type=RSS

+1 on Google Reader, it is really good for following blogs, news, etc.

The RSS icon that you want to find looks like this (this one is huge !!)

Most of the blogs have it but there are lots that don't.

There are two similar technologies, RSS or Atom. Some blogs
just have a link that says: Atom Feed (they are called feeds,
because they automatically "feed" your reader).

If they do not have it, you can do what Doug indicates of
putting the URL (internet address) on the subscribe field in
Google Reader.

@Doug
Thanks for the instruction for following wetcanvas on Google reader.
It never occurred to me to follow it on the reader.

Carlos, the only way I can monitor the total number of forums on wetcanvas is to monitor the RSS feed. That gives the title, posters name and first few lines of each post. I can then see any spam threads and delete them, and look at any that interest me. here's a screen shot:

Yes Doug, thanks so much for the tip.
I already created a WetCanvas folder on my Google Reader
and subscribed to ALL the forums that I usually follow.

Your tip has saved me tons of time because I used to go
to each of the forums one by one, clicking on the list that
appears on the home page.... thanks a million again...

Thanks Doug and Carlos.I think that the problem maybe is that I use Yahoo.ie as my homepage on the Mac and Google seems to be the way to go.Do you both use Chrome? I now have two grey version of the symbol Carlos has put up on my toolbar, one positive and one negative to use a painting term, which bring up a number when I am on a site such as this.If I click on them it will give me the option to set up my email account on the Mac which I don't want to do as it can be messy.I do have a" subscribe "button installed on the toolbar which allows me to subscribe to a blog, and when I click on it,it brings me to the Google Reader site where I can opt to subscribe or not but can also see the other blogs I am subscribed to.Which I suppose is a roundabout version.Doug, can I ask how do you get to your reader page? Thanks to you both again

No larry I use Firefox which is a tabbed browser, so my two permanent tabs are Google Reader and Gmail which allow me to see new threads and posts to subscribed forums when they appear.

So the link to my reader tab is http://www.google.com/reader/view and then my personal subscription link at the end. So you need to go to Google Reader and subscribe then put a shortcut on your toolbar for easy access.

Mmm... Larry, do not hold your breath on this one...
see what I just find in one of my feeds:

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/03/google-announces-readers-imminent-demise/

I try the service that they recommend, newsblur, but it is down!!
I guess that all the users of Google Reader are running to the next
one...

will see when it comes back if it is any good. We will have to
start looking for a new RSS Reader... bummer...

I hope they can be persuaded to change their minds, I find Reader invaluable.

Don't like Feedly.
