View Full Version : WDE march 9 - Sunflower Field

Thanks Oty for the great references and for hosting. I have a hard time passing up flowers (I may do the other flower yet). I tried to get the field in, but it didn't come out right - is overworked, definitely. I cropped it down from a 12 x 16 to probably 12 x 12 for that reason. It took about 3 hours I think - but I lost track of time, as usual. I found this little quote for those who might be struggling with 'perfection' like I do some times:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in.
~Leonard Cohen

Now to check everyone else's work.....

You see the faults, but we don't. :D Beautifully done.

Great quote....good old Leonard Cohen!
I sometimes overwork things too. Always trying to reach what's in my mind's eye. Or, saving a nice piece that had gone south!;) I tell myself to move away from the canvas! In exasperation I end up turning it over and leaving it for a month or much longer. Then I turn it around and live with it...it never seems as bad, and i see a way forward with fresh eyes.

Just lovely.

Doesn't come across as overworked, in fact it seems to capture the freshness of the petals well.
I think Mr. Cohen pinched that one off Edith Sitwell speaking about artist William Blake, "He was cracked, of course, but that's where the light came in."

Its a beautiful flower and so is the quote.

Yep! That sunflower still looks fresh to me!
Re the quote: partner Alison pointed out to me that Baudelaire wrote a poem, 'The Cracked Bell' which is well worth a look. Our Leonard seems to have done a neat splice job on two sources! I'm all in favour of creative plagiarism!
